Quilting on the Red 2011
2 Quilting on the Red Show 2011
The North Star Quilters Guild is pleased to invite
you to our 2011 Quilting on the Red Quilt Show.
The North Star Quilters Guild was founded in 1981 as an educational organization by a group of
enthusiastic quilters whose skills ranged from
beginner to expert. The purpose of the guild is to
share ideas and knowledge about quilting, inspire enthusiasm
and growth, develop skills, maintain ideas and standards, and
promote interest in and appreciation of the world of quilting.
This past year we began a new adventure with a very successful
Educational Conference which featured local, regional and
national instructors. This year we look forward to a wonderful
quilt show, featured speakers, shopping at vendors from area quilt shops and most of all meeting and visiting with you.
The quilt show will be open Saturday, October 15 from
9:00am-7:00pm and Sunday, October 16, from 9:00am-
4:00pm. Daily admission is $5.00. Children under 12 are free.
Our venue this year is the Grand Forks Alerus Convention
Center. We were thrilled with the facility at last year’s education
conference and are excited about its possibilities at this year’s
quilt show. We hope you agree and enjoy the show.

Meet Our Presenters
Yvonne Hollenbeck - South Dakota
www.yvonnehollenbeck.com
Yvonne Hollenbeck is a Clearfield, South Dakota
rancher’s wife, and whenever she is not helping
with the many duties that requires, she is busy
making quilts or writing and performing poetry.
She is not only from a long line of quilters, but
her grandmothers were also poets, and Yvonne apparently inherited the two skills from them. Both hobbies have taken
her to national levels, as her quilts have won local, state and
national contests and her poetry has garnered her a spot on
the largest cowboy poetry gatherings in the nation. Yvonne is
currently the number one award-winning cowgirl poet in America and has published four books and numerous CDs
involving her poetry, several of which are also award winners.
Reflections of our lives occur as one sees the quilts made
by loving hands at a time when there was no running water,
electricity or modern conveniences that we enjoy today. All of
the quilts were made on farms and ranches in Nebraska and
South Dakota. Her poetry, mostly of a humorous nature, sheds light on today’s little problems while being ever mindful of the
hardships and big problems faced by the women of yesteryear.
Kate Eelkema - St. Paul, Minnesota
Kate Eelkema returns to Quilting on the Red Quilt Show as this year’s nationally certified judge. In 2003 Kate
assisted nationally certified judge, Cindy Erickson, as
part of her certification process. Since then Kate,
originally from North Dakota, has moved to St. Paul
where she is an elementary school media specialist. Kate
is active in the Minnesota Quilters and serves on the Minnesota Quilt Show Committee. She enjoys combining
her background in education with her love of quilting to
help others create their own works of art. A National
Quilt Association Certified Judge, she judges quilt
shows, teaches quiltmaking workshops, gives lectures about various aspects of quilting and always has quilts
hanging on the walls of her library.
In addition to judging this year’s show, Kate will present
two lectures on Saturday.
4 Quilting on the Red Show 2011
Lectures
Yvonne Hollenbeck Patchwork on the Prairie Friday, 7:00 pm
Quilters and non-quilters will enjoy this program.
**No quilting experience required
Yvonne unfolds and shows five generations of
quilts spanning 135 years, which were made by
herself, her mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, and recites poems
about quilts and quilters. By the end of the presentation, one
will be able to see the progression of style, fabric and methods of
quilting through the last one hundred fifty years. This heart-
warming and entertaining presentation has become one of the
most requested programs in the Heartland. Yvonne has a way of making her family memories invoke your own as she tells of “The
Old Felt Hat,” “The Annual Christmas Program” and “Prairie
Patchwork.”
Kate Eelkema Here Comes the Judge Saturday, 3:00-4:00 pm
When you attend a quilt show, do you wonder
why some quilts have ribbons and others do
not? Do you hesitate to enter a quilt competition
because you don’t know what happens in that judging room? This is your chance to hear a nationally certified quilt
judge explain what judges look for in the judging room, what it
takes to make a blue ribbon quilt, and why it is important to
enter quilt shows even if you don’t win.
What Next? Finishing School for Your Quilt Saturday, 7:00–8:00 pm
You have finished creating your quilt top—now what?
Join Kate as she shares great tips and hints for the
finishing “Bs” – Borders, Batting, Backing, Basting,
and Binding. This is important information that you don’t usually have time to learn in a quilt class, but which can
greatly increase the quality of your finished project.
