Commonalities among Original Protection Sports
Early sports were designed to evaluate breeding suitability
Is the dog of sound temperament?
Is the dog trainable? Is the dog
courageous?
![Page 10: Protection Sports in Perspective](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062702/55496200b4c905fc4e8b5e59/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Personal Protection Sports include a civil aspect: Will he bite for real?
![Page 11: Protection Sports in Perspective](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062702/55496200b4c905fc4e8b5e59/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
What is the genesis of Aggression?
![Page 12: Protection Sports in Perspective](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062702/55496200b4c905fc4e8b5e59/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Aggression…. Is a natural behavior. Is a combination of the
dog’s genetic makeup and conditioning.
Is scary to people who have never seen it up close.
Intent must be inferred from observed behaviors.
![Page 13: Protection Sports in Perspective](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062702/55496200b4c905fc4e8b5e59/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

Drive Theory of Aggression Drives are inherent, genetically hard wired,
behavioral responses to certain stimuli (triggers).
Prey Drive (trigger is movement) Defense Drive (trigger is threat) Social Drive (trigger is infringement of social
position) “Fight Drive” (learned enjoyment of combat is a
trained response).
![Page 15: Protection Sports in Perspective](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062702/55496200b4c905fc4e8b5e59/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Aggression in Perspective
As pet trainers, we are usually thinking about mitigating aggression.
Protection trainers use aggression, and mold it using behavioral conditioning techniques.
Mostly, we are putting limits on the expression of the behavior once developed properly.

we mold quality genetics into complex sequences of behavior.
