FUTURE MEMORIES New editorial techniques
African, Caribbean and African
American art publications and
magazines
For the upcoming Dakar 2014
Biennial, Afrikadaa, the contemporary
art magazine, is proposing a day
of workshops in partnership with
Malick NDIAYE, associate researcher
at CRAL, EHESS/CNRS. In line with the
Dakar Biennial theme for 2014 « Art
Professions », art historians, publishers,
publication directors, art critics and
artists will be invited to contribute to
a day of workshops focusing on new
editorial techniques and exploring
the emergence of new media and
platforms dedicated to contemporary
creation within African, Caribbean
and African American art publications.
Thème et contexte
Les revues d’art et publications afri-
caines, afro-américaines et caribéennes
construisent une vision critique qui
appréhende la richesse et la dynamique
de l’inventivité créative des aires cultu-
relles concernées. Elles accompagnent
les évènements artistiques, les institu-
tions culturelles, l’épanouissement de la
création et l’émergence des cultures et
savoir-faire. En rendant compte des mu-
tations sociales des sociétés sur lesquelles
elles pointent leurs curseurs, ces publica-
tions offrent de singulières visions et de
nouvelles perspectives dont le rythme
changeant déroute toute appréhension
normative.
Comment
entretiennent-elles des liens avec un
Theme and context
For a number of years now, African, Ca-
ribbean and African American publica-
tions and magazines have built a critical
perspective to grasp the rich and dyna-
mic nature of creative invention within
these cultural spheres. They accompany
artistic events, cultural institutions, crea-
tive development and the emergence of
techniques and cultures. By focusing on
the ever changing society, these publica-
tions offer singular visions and new pers-
pectives whose changing rhythms shake-
up normative points of view. By offering
a space for the emergence of art and the
consolidation of a variety of professions
Arts (publishers, art critics, art historians,
curators, journalists), these editorial pro-
ductions, in various formats, deprovin-
cialize cultural spheres. They equilibrate
the invisible balance of power in a world
of art where the tools for knowledge and
validation are strongly concentrated.
What is the critical nature of these pu-
blications? What is their progressive
nature? How do they develop their rela-
tionship with a local and international
public? How do they put local creativity
in a global history? How do they insert
themselves in the history of ideas while
public local et international ? Comment
positionnent-elles l’inventivité créative
locale dans une histoire globale ? Dans
nants. Ces ateliers/débats seront suivis,
prolongés et illustrés par une narration
théorique sous forme d’exposition/per-
formance.
keeping their own intellectual identity? Just
a few of the multiple questions which these
publications face and which the “Future
Memories” seminar will attempt to answer
during the 11th edition of the Dakar Bien-
nial (Dak’Art) 2014. The seminar will study
both the reasoning and the types of nego-
tiations relevant to each publication from
the point of view of critique and theory
and using a historical approach They will
be analysed both within their context and
situated within their global cultural fra-
mework.
‘Future Memories’ will be organized in two
parts. First, a day long study seminar will
focus on the historical and critical context
of the African, Caribbean and African Ame-
rican publications and magazines. These
debates and workshops will then be fol-
lowed by a theory of the narrative in the
form of a publication , performance and
exhibit.
poraine. Une attention particulière est
Initiator of the symposium
Afrikadaa is a French and Senegalese asso-
ciation, created in 2012 by an art collective.
It promotes contemporary art from Africa
and its diaspora. Afrikadaa is also an online
magazine published on a quarterly basis
through the website www.afrikadaa.com.
The digital space is designed as an incu-
bator for emerging artists as they develop
throughout the territories of the African
diaspora.
From it’s first edition, its editors have ta-
ken a great interest in the Dakar Biennial
considering that the art fair is the must-see
contemporary art event of international
stature in Africa due to the quality of the
artists it presents.
For the 2012 Biennial, Afrikadaa organized
an exhibition on the ‘Off’ circuit. Valuable
cultural partnerships were developed ena-
bling its editors to gauge the depth of artis-
tic exchanges between Senegal and France.
The Biennial encouraged the creation of
collaborative linkages between the Revue,
its diaspora artists and those from the Afri-
can continent.
It is in this context that we want to establish
a scientific meeting on the theme of Afri-
can American and African Caribbean art
publications. It is therefore an intervention
vivant.
Ce projet trouve ainsi une résonance
pertinente dans la thématique pro-
posée par la Biennale 2014 sur «les
métiers de l’art». Le monde de l’édition
et des publications étant un secteur
sinistré dans les territoires africains, il
était pertinent de proposer une confé-
rence afin d’aborder les questions et
problématiques de développement et
de dynamisation éditoriaux.
focused on the emergence of new media
and platforms dedicated to contemporay
creation. Particular attention is paid to
digital publications with the development
of the use of web, development that has
proven in Africa and in the territories of the
diaspora, the emergence of innovative edi-
torial practices in relation to new writing
and reading interactive media demateria-
lized. Moreover, Afrikadaa being a digital
platform., editorial and curatorial practices
of the review are as such a living contempo-
rary artistic heritage.
This project and is relevant resonance to the
theme proposed by the Biennale 2014 on
«Art professions». The world of publishing
and publications being a disaster area in
African territories, it was appropriate to
propose a conference to address the issues
and problems of development and revitali-
zation editorials.
