Evaluation of Basic Life Support Retention Rate in a two year study
Author:Dr. Mihai Negrea, MDCoordinators:Dr. Cristian Boeriu, PHD, Dr. Emilia Turucz, MD
What do We do?
• OSMU and SMURD - Mures Training Center organize together Emergency Medicine Courses for over 5 years
• ALS Summer School Is the largest&complex program on medical education for students
• Training for SMURD Volunteers
• Training for non medical persons: Pupils, school teachers, kindergarten children, adults
Why do we do it?• Over 380 thousand people have
Cardiac Arrest every year in USA
• Over 700 thousand people have cardiac arrest every year in Europe
• 280 000 die every year in USA
• 275 000 are treated every year by EMT`s in Europe
This are our Goals
• To make efficient courses
• To have an efficient, reliable, cheap method of evaluation
• To have long term high retention rate
How?• We have built a micro-website for
testing and data collection www.osmu.ro/testare
• We used an web based email service (www.mailchimp.com) for communication
• We’ve made standard tests for our students which we used to evaluate them on different time intervals
• We’ve followed the ILCOR and ERC guidelines
2 Lots
Marisiensis 2011• 25 dentistry students
• BLS plus elements of ALS
• Theoretic Course, Practice with instructors and demonstration, One day training
Volunteers• 78 appliances for the Course
• 50 graduating the course
• 18 medical students,3 MD’s,29 other
• Theoretic course, Practice with instructors and demo(2days), Work practice with a predefined tasks.
What we did?
Marisiensis:• We’ve tested them on
paper after course
• Online 6 month, 1 year, 2 years
Volunteers:• We’ve tested them on
paper pre-course, after-course
• Online 6 months, 1 year
• 2 years still to come in November

Marisiensis 2011Volunteers
But…
• We had low response rates
• Volunteer lot: 36-40%
• Marisiensis 2011: 20-28%
Conclusions• We teach very efficient BLS courses over 92% average in
post-Course testing
• For those who participate in the Volunteer training program Retention Rate Loss is insignificant even after 1 year
• For the Marisiensis Lot the lost of information was significant at 6 months time but didn`t change even after 2 years
• We could pinpoint the exact information that wasn`t transmitted correctly
We are good at teaching
And some other aspects
• Although online evaluation is cheap, reliable, efficient we still have to find out how to make people to collaborate
• All evaluations have to personalized so a database with all of our students should be the next step
• Over 50-60% response rate would be more acceptable
The End
