History of the Political Parties:An overview of the history of the political parties in
the US.
Overview of the Parties:
Republicans Vs. Democrats
The 1791 Democratic-Republican Party:
1791: The Democratic-Republican Party was one
party; its purpose was to stand against the Federalist Party
Democrats felt that the government (SHOULD NOT)
make religious or moral legislation
Republicans felt that the government (SHOULD)
interfere with morality issues
They supported states’ rights and the literal and strict
interpretation of the Constitution
They strove to prevent the US government from becoming too
similar to a monarchy
Over the next century, the Democratic and Republican parties began to materialize
into the two-party system that we have today

The Importance of Minor Parties:
Minor parties play an important role in politics due to their ability to influence
the controlling party to adopt some
of their platforms
Because they are not a controlling party, minor parties can be inventive, take chances
and promote radical ideas easier than established major
parties
Minor political parties can introduce new viewpoints and approaches that major parties would not have introduced on
their own without losing support of the base
