The Oil Leak
President’s Message
for September 2015
What a pleasure it is to have so many people to thank this month. As you will see,
this just shows what a great club this is and how dedicated and involved is our
membership.
First of all I would like to thank the Philbrick family for hosting our August meeting in their
beautiful circa 1830 barn in Acton. The Philbrick barn was a great venue for a meeting. Those
of us far enough from the door didn’t even get any mosquito bites. Haha. At that meeting we had
our Technical Forum with some great questions submitted mostly by our Oil Leak Editor Tony
Zeoli. I would like to thank Tony for taking the time to put so many good questions together and
thank the members of the panel for their excellent and very complete answers to the various
questions. I think most of us learned something from the discussion. For example, I now have a
whole new respect for my spark lever!
Next, with your permission, I would like to dedicate this issue of the “Leak”, as Tony calls it, to
Martha and John Kerns. Thanks to them the first Minuteman Club Picnic in many years is
now history. And what a great day it was with great weather (if a little warm) and a beautiful
location in the expansive back yard at the Kerns’ home. Many members helped with this effort,
actually too many to mention; but, no one should underestimate the work and attention to detail
that comes with hosting such an event. I know John and Martha worked on this for weeks, even
months, and put together a wonderful day for us to enjoy. Thank you both so much.
Remember that the September meeting will be at 280 South Street in Marlboro, hosted by Tony
Raiano and his family. This is another great location for a meeting with ample parking spaces.
Thank you so much Tony for the offer to host us. The program for the evening will be a very in-
teresting tour of Tony’s complete machine shop located on the premises.
The October meeting will find us back at the Church in Sudbury. Mike Doyle and I are looking
for a program for that meeting. Any ideas? Anyone have a presentation they would like to offer?
As you know, our November meeting is our annual auction and December is scheduled for the
Holiday Party. Hard to believe how the year is winding down. Let’s enjoy what is left of it to the
max!
Respectfully,
Rich Batstone

Secretary's Report
August 4, 2015 Meeting of the Minuteman Model A Club
The meeting was held at the home of Jon Philbrick, Arlington St., Acton.
The meeting was opened with the singing of “God Bless America” led by Bob and Cindy Mangan. The
Mangans then performed an old Model A Song followed by applause of the forty people in attendance.
President Batstone thanked the Mangans for their music and the Philbrick family for hosting the
club. He also thanked Doug Linden for presiding at last month’s meeting and Marty Grady for the his-
toric flag presentation at the last meeting. He then told the story of a man who hired a down-on-his-luck
painter to paint his porch (or Porsche) to the groans and laughter of those present.
Membership chair; Nan Linden reported no new members this month.
Mike Doyle gave the touring report – listing August and some of September’s tours: a dinner tour Aug. 5;
Stowe, VT Aug. 7,8 & 9; Valente farm tour on the 12th; the club picnic Aug. 15th; a tour to Kimball’s Aug.
18th; a tour on the 26th to Frosty’s in Sherborn; and the last Saturday of the month tour to Windham
Junction, NH. September tours has Rich Batstone leading a tour to Eriksons on the 3rd and Doug Lin-
den to Trombettas ice cream tour on the 9th of Sept.
John Jacobson announced that Friday night at Stowe, VT members could come to the campground adja-
cent to the flea market campground to order Pizza as a group for dinner.
Vice president Doug Linden reported that most clubs nationally are losing members, we have added ten
so far this year.
Wayne Champagne asked for pictures for the web site.
The program for the evening was a technical forum led by knowledgeable members of the club answering
technical question from the membership. Next month the meeting would be at the home of Tony Raiano
in Marlborough and the program would be a tour of Tony’s machine shop. There is still no program for
October, November’s program is the annual auction and December is the Holiday party.
It was announced that award winning newsletter Editor Tony Zeoli would be stepping down at the end
of the year and a new editor would be needed. Member Curtis Renner is in need of a spring spreader and
some in attendance were able to direct him to members who had the tool.
The meeting was adjourned for snacks, followed by the technical forum program.

Model T Outing Verrill Farm Picnic Tour
August 1, 2015
This tour was lead by Ronnie and Jim Bodkin. Coffee and
donuts holes were provided at the grange start while early
birds waited for the gathering. What a wonderful time we
participants had on this tour. The weather was threatening,
but never became a problem. There were about seven Model
T’s and four model A’s The Verrill Farm was a great place
to picnic and the Wayside Inn is always a nice place to visit.
Thank You, Ronnie & Jim.

Some of the questions that were addressed: 1. Most Model A'ers have a fuse installed on the starter. Why? If it is important, why didn't Ford install them? Rick Gadbois
2. Why does the shift lever pop out of gear in second, only when climbing a hill at slow speed? Jack Stokinger
3. Can you rebuild the emergency brake without rebuilding the rear brakes? Jack Stokinger
4. What is the screen's function in the gas tank filler hole? Is it important? Len Michalak
5. What is considered good Model A gas mileage here in New England? Len Michalak
6. Should you retard the spark when climbing a hill? If so, how do you know how much? Rick Gadbois
7. What causes a front end wobble when the brakes are applied rapidly in an emergency stop? Harold Legge
8. What is the proper ammeter charge levels at cruising speed, no light? With cowl lights and tail lights? With low beam headlights? With high beam headlights? Doug Linden
9. How do you know when the condenser needs to be replaced? Harold Legge
10.When rebuilding a carburetor, how do you calibrate the flow rate of the jets for optimum performance? What causes mild backfires through the carb when descending a hill or decelerating gear Wayne Champagne

Nuts & Bolts
Jon Philbrick’s Venue August 4, 2015
( Tech Talk )
Minuteman had a very interesting and informative August club meeting. New youth member, Jon
Philbrick hosted a first time meet at his perfect venue. Not only was it great hearing about his in-
volvement with Model A’s since he was 14, from Jon and his father Scott, the Minuteman held a
Tech Talk Q & A session. All questions were well covered in detail by the Minuteman Technical
Team, Rick Gadbois, Doug Linden , Jack Stokinger. Len Michalak, Wayne Champagne
and Harold Legge. In fact, they were so clear and precise I was afraid to get into my town sedan
on the next tour. A great example of: “The more you know ...the more you need to know”. The bot-
tom line is the team exceeded my expectations. Thanks Guys

1930 Model A Ford driven 100,000 miles since 1999!
Norm Grant of Trenton, Ontario, belongs to the Model A Owners of Canada Inc. (http://www.modelaowners.com). In 1999, he
purchased his 1930 Model A Ford Tudor, a dependable fun car to commute to work (60 miles a day) and something he could work
on himself:
“I installed signal lights and halogen headlights for safety. I learned how to shift gears and in 1999 I drove 10,268 miles. The next
year, the motor was rebuilt, and after only 60 miles, I broke a new connecting rod and lost some driving time. With the new motor,
I drove 9,609 miles in 2001. In 2002 I added another 8,476 miles and I passed the 25,000-mile mark.
“In 1932, a Model A was driven from Toronto to Vancouver in 96.25 hours. Our 24-year-old son James and I decided to duplicate
the trip and see if we could break the record. On June 10, 2004, we departed Toronto City Hall at 11 p.m. We replaced a burnt
exhaust valve in Manitoba and reached Vancouver City Hall at 2 p.m. on June 14, exactly 87 hours after leaving Toronto. By the
end of 2004, I passed the 50,000-mile mark.
“In 2007 we drove our Model A with three other A’s to the Yukon. I rebuilt the motor before the tour. On June 9, we sent the four
Model A’s to Calgary by train, then flew to Calgary. On July 27, we arrived in Dawson City, Yukon.
“The next day we drove two of the Model A’s (including mine) up the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Circle. Five hundred miles
of gravel roads but we made it back in 20 hours in the oldest cars to cross the Arctic Circle in Canada.
“By the end of 2007, I had over 70,000 miles on the car. The year 2008 got off to a bad start with an engine rear main bearing go-
ing but we were soon back on the road. The car ran great all year and by November I had passed the 80,000-mile mark.
“In 2012, the rear main bearing went again and the motor was out for the rest of the year. Early in 2013 the motor was back in but
quickly developed a rear main bearing oil leak. A local machine shop installed a rubber seal and stopped the leak. “In November 2014, I passed the 100,000-mile mark. It was a long journey and driving the car was only part of the fun. The peo-
ple I have met on the 100,000-mile journey have made it very special. I wonder what the next 100,000 miles will bring.”
I’m always looking for more stories. Email [email protected] or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leamington,
Ont. N8H 3W2. Everyone whose story is published in my column will receive a free autographed copy of my book: “OLD CAR
DETECTIVE FAVOURITE STORIES, 1925 to 1965.”

Our Model A Ford club is fortunate to have
several “younglings” in the club. New minute-
man member Jon Philbrick is a grand example
of Model A youth involvement. He was gra-
cious enough to host our August 2015 club
meeting at his home. We learned that he start-
ed working on his modified Model AA truck at
the age of 14. The truck is very practical and is
used for many purposes. Thank you Jon for
the great meeting venue. It was a please tak-
ing to you and your father Scott. Report & Photos

We are often asked about our concern
for the home security, due to many
tours, cottage stays, grandchild visits
and travels.
As most people, we take many precau-
tions on lengthy absences. Most im-
portantly, let people know how long we
will be gone. First, create a ring of
neighboring homes that keep an eye on
things. Second, notify the city police
and they will make regular rounds.
(especially if you are a patrolman's do-
nor) Mail carrier, lawn care and snow
removal personnel and the milkman
must be notified. ( just kidding about
the milkman)
Additionally, you can install alarm ser-
vice, perimeter motion activated night
light. And infrared motion activated
night vision cameras are not that ex-
pensive.
Luckily, the only incident we've ever
had to date has been doggies doing
number two on the lawn.
While taking these precautions can our
homes still be ransacked? Yes, of
course. If the alleged most powerful
nation in the world can't protect an
American Embassy like Benghazi, then
it can happen to anyone of us.
But be assured your house will be
more secure in your absence, then
when you are home. Finally, wouldn’t
you would much rather have incidents
happen while you are away?

I've got two Pakistani flags raised in the front garden, one at each corner, and the black flag of ISIS in the center.

who are Minuteman and non-members. Their automo-
bile interest consists primarily of model As and model
Ts. They meet in Grafton, MA every Wednesday.
Big Apple Restaurant
The summer twenty plus member minuteman
gathering has been testing the new hires for their
spunk. Here is Brazilian Michele (pronounced
Michele Lee) with our lead “tester” Gene Bunce.
She did not last long Anyway, it is hard to de-
termine who is happier in this picture.
Wednesday Breakfast Club
On occasions, some Thread-
heads visit Keepsake Quilt-
ing ng in Moultonborough,
NH. I was there recently
and love to critique the Prize
Winners on display. Here
they are from top to bottom -
first to third. I think it
should be first third then
second. If you wish to know
why…. Ask me!

The Oil Leak

This car was the cleaver idea of
Henry Ford II. Because
the “woody’s” were popular in the
50’s, he asked the factory to make
one. They found a Model A chassis
and built that one-of-a-kind around
it. Of course, the engineers and
sales dept. thought the price would
be too high, so it died on the draw-
ing boards. Henry Ford II. was
just coming out of the WWII service
and probably had no idea how in-
volved and expensive it was to make
a new model (my view). That may
be why he hired the “Whiz Kids”,
who later went into the Federal
Govt. administration.
