On the 3rd of September 2012, we were privi-
leged to have at our community Mr Emanuel J.
Comino AM (Aus), Founder and Chairman of
the International Organising Committee –
Australia-For the Restitution of the Parthenon
Marbles (IOC-A-RPM). Mr Comino gave a
passionate and informative talk regarding the
history of the Parthenon Marbles. His presenta-
tion was articulate, inspiring and highly enlight-
ening. The lecture was well attended and his
lecture was accompanied by a power point
presentation. At the end of the lecture, a ques-
tion and answer session took place. We wish to
warmly thank George Ballas (OAM) in facilitat-
ing Mr Comino’s visit to our community to give
his lecture. Thank you to Peter Demetre for
technical support on the night and also to the
Ladies Auxiliary for refreshments. For those of
you who are interested in this topic, you can
view an interesting lecture presented by Mr
Comino in London in June 2012 on the web.
On Sunday the 9th of September 2012, we held
our annual St Anna Day celebrations in our
church grounds. This event was well attended.
Our guests on the day were the Consul of
Greece in Qld, Mr Jim Raptis and his wife
Helen. The Junior Dance Group performed
some wonderful routines under the tutelage of
Vera Georgiou. Many thanks to Vera and the
dancers! To have the celebrations outside takes
an enormous amount of manpower and we
wish to thank all the volunteers (too numerous
to mention) who erected marquees, cooked
the food, set up the tables, dismantled the
marquees, and helped with final cleanup.
Many thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for all
their efforts in preparing and serving the
delicious luncheon.
On Saturday, the 15th of September 2012,
the Ladies Auxiliary with the assistance of
the Main Committee held a market day in
our car park. The majority of the items for
sale were new clothes kindly donated by
Tassos and Thalia Zakos. This was a huge
physical undertaking to cart thousands of
items of clothing and racks from their house
to our community and to sort through and
set up. A big thank you goes to non-
committee volunteers who assisted before
the event and on the day. They were Aliki
Christou, Helen Paris, George Dimopoulos,
and Reg Allan. Not only did we sell clothes,
but also sweets. We thank Georgia Georgiou
and Stella Tirivolis for all their assistance in
making the beautiful Greek sweets. The
sweets sold like hot cakes on the day. We
plan to have another monster sale again
next month, so please tell all your friends
and neighbours.
On Thursday the 13th of
September 2012 we
were all saddened to
learn of the passing of
our dear friend and long
term parishioner of this
community, Panayiota
Demetre. Our sympathy
goes to her husband,
Harry (Hambie), to their
devoted children, Peter,
Joanna, Helen, and
Suzie and to their ex-
tended families. May her memory be eternal.

ST ANNA’S FEAST DAY
It was a joyous celebration for St Anna’s day in the
Church grounds. Our own parishioners were joined by
parishioners from St Paraskevi and by a bus of
visitors from Melbourne. We are very grateful to our
visitors and to all who attended for making our
celebration complete. The Ladies Auxiliary remains
very appreciative to all those who offer their assis-
tance on such an occasion – our determined helpers
who are always by our side as well as some visitors
who so willingly offered another pair of hands on the
day. We also thank Theo Kostoglu of Kouzina Res-
taurant for his help. This is true community spirit!
MEMORIAL 23rd SEPTEMBER - Over the years
we have had many people who have worked within
the Church and Community who have passed away.
Annually, the Ladies Auxiliary organises and offers
the Memorial kolliva in remembrance of all those
people. This memorial took place on 23rd September.
Their generous efforts for their Church and Commu-
nity are never forgotten.
VALE, PANAYIOTA - Sadly, we mourn the passing
of good friend and community member, Panayiota
Demetre. Panayiota always so willingly helped the
Church, Community and the Auxiliary whenever she
could, often working long hours (her loukoumades
were legendary) to assist with vital fundraising to
keep our religion and culture alive on the Gold Coast.
Panayiota was also a deeply loved member of the
Senior Citizens and Friends and will also be missed
by all of those in that group. We again extend our
sympathy to Panayiota’s husband, Hambi and to her
children – Peter, Jo, Eleni and Suzie, to their spouses
and to their children. We’re sure Panayiota’s strong
presence will be with them forever.
MONSTER SALE
This was held mid September and involved a huge
effort. We are grateful to Thalia and Tasso Zahos who
offered thousands of items of NEW clothing. We
thank all who assisted with the day including Aliki
Ladies Auxiliary Christou, Helen Paris, Reg Allan, George Dimopou-
los, Ann Nides and Georgia Georgiou as well as our
committee members and our President.
The sale will be held one more time on Satur-
day, October 13 from 7.30am-12pm. There are
HUGE numbers of items available so come and get a
real bargain. There will be clothing, books, maga-
zines, bric a brac and medical aides. There will also
be a sausage sizzle and Greek Sweets for sale. Tell
your families and friends!
THANK YOU - A special thankyou to Perry Arathi-
mos for all the work he does in the hall and around
the grounds.

SENIOR CITIZENS AND FRIENDS FUNCTION
To mark the special milestone of 15 years since the
formation of our Senior Citizens and Friends group,
the Ladies Auxiliary and Community will hold an
evening of festivity in early February. This month
has been selected for Valentine’s Day to show our
love for our Seniors within our community. As well,
part proceeds will go to the Gold Coast Hospital
which provides such an important role within our
community. We have supported the hospital through
the years, and we hope to make this function a very
special one to honour our Senior Citizens and
Friends and to again help the Hospital. Please see
the flyer in the next issue of the Phos for more infor-
mation.

SPIRITUAL CORNER
How to develop Patience: With Lollies?
Patience is something most of us long for. Too
often we find ourselves upset because some-
thing does not happen how and when we want
it to. But how can we develop greater patience?
Elder Paisios gave some good advice about
how to develop patience to one of his follow-
ers. When he was asked about how to acquire
patience, he went into his cell and brought out
a bag of lollies
He gave to him and said: "Take two a
day. However, do not chew them. Be patient and
wait until they melt in your mouth."
Do you see the wisdom he uses here? He takes
something so simple, eating lollies, something
that is an everyday thing, and turns it into a
spiritual exercise. He makes the exercise simple
and doable. You too can find many of these
opportunities in your daily life to help develop
virtues such as patience.

On the 24th to 26th of August St. Anna's Parish
organised a Church Camp at Camp Bornhoffen. The camp was well attended with around 45
guests staying over the 2 nights and a further
45 visitors coming on the Saturday. His Grace Bishop Iakovos was the special guest at the
camp and with Father Roman conducted a
Matins and Vespers Service and a Sunday morning Divine Liturgy Service. His Grace also
gave a spiritual talk for the adults and also
spent time talking and educating the children. We thank His Grace for his commitment to the
weekend. It was such a great experience for
everyone. Thanks to Fr Roman for organising
His Grace to come to the camp and the huge efforts in making the camp a success.
Preparation for the camp was a big effort but made easy with the assistance of our Master
Chef Spiro Levanes and his wife Trudy. The
Manettas family donated all the fruit and vegeta-bles for the weekend from their Robina Earth
Markets fruit shop, The Jaubram family donated
food from their Surfers Paradise IGA shop and the Berta family also donated enormous
amounts of food. It really is a huge effort by
these three families and we cannot thank them enough. Also thank you to George Leolius and
his family for the contribution of firewood. The
Sen and Allen families helped provide activities for the children that they thoroughly enjoyed
and us parents were so appreciative of their
efforts.
Thank you also to those who attended and
helped make the camp a success. We will be
doing another camp next year so please keep checking our website regularly for the dates and
details.
