NOVEMBER 2013 Volume 1, No. 13 CAMARILLO BRANCH
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear AAUW-Camarillo Members:
Thanks to those of you who supported our October programs. The Tech Trek feedback
program went well, and the event was obviously very meaningful to the girls and
their families. The Eleanor/FDR/Lucy program on Oct 13 was well attended, and the
presentation was outstanding. The PM Book Review group has invited the presenter,
Martha Abbey Miller, to attend their next meeting to portray Anne Morrow
Lindbergh, which should be another standout event. Note that the date for that
will be Monday November 4. More information inside.
Our biggest event in November is our Author Lunch event on November 2, so it
should be happening just as you receive this newsletter. Ticket sales have gone
very well, and I am looking forward to hearing four new authors. I have become
quite a fan of Jeri Westerson, whom we met at the previous Author's Lunch. Maybe I
will discover a new favorite this year!
The other November general meeting will be Wednesday November 13 at the VCCF
hall. The topic will be Nutrition for the Holidays: Separating Fact from
Fiction. See inside for more information on this meeting.
The 50th Anniversary committee has been formed and has begun to make plans for a
gala event, which will be on Saturday, May 17. Be sure that date is entered in
your calendar! If you have old mementos of Branch events, or especially any
photos, please send them to me. I can scan and return.
Another special event will be the InterBranch Council Meeting, which will be on
Saturday January 25. We did not have good representation last year, which is
quite a shame as it is our opportunity to meet and share ideas with AAUW members
in other local branches. I am asking you to mark this date down, and make a
special effort to attend in January. More info on this will come in the next
newsletter, and also by Evite.
Finally, I need to remind you that the Branch Executive Committee meets each month
on the second Monday, and that members are always welcome to attend and share
their ideas. This month the meeting will be on November 11 and be held at the
home of xxxxxxx.
Best wishes,
Vanessa

UPCOMING GENERAL MEETING
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS TERRI LISAGOR?
November 13, 2013 - Wednesday
7:00 p.m.
Ventura County Community Foundation
Terri has finally surfaced. She's been very busy since she was our President in 1996, and a
Named Grant Honoree. Since then she has received her EdD in Nutrition/Food Science from
CSUN, and is currently teaching at Pepperdine University. She has agreed to take some some
from her busy schedule to come and speak to us on a topic of current importance, especially
for the upcoming holidays. Please join us at the beautiful Ventura County Community
Foundation to hear Terri speak on:
NUTRITION FOR THE HOLIDAYS
SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION
For those of you who missed the Tech Trek evening, the VCCF is located next to the
Camarillo Ranch House. Bring your questions, comments, and fears and let Terri guide us
toward having a happy, healthy holiday.

SAVE THE DATE: SATURDAY MAY 17TH FOR OUR HISTORY!
Planning of our Anniversary Celebration is now formally underway. It will be on Saturday, May 17th and will be a
lunch or high tea at the Ackerman's. We will invite all the living members from the first year, and also all the
previous Branch Presidents. There will be some skits and/or historical information and we will all wear HATS.
So put it on your calendars now: Saturday May 17th AAUW Camarillo 50th Anniversary.
Meantime we are researching our historical information. There were once three large leather-bound scrapbooks of
history. They have disappeared in the past ten years. Does anyone know where they, or other pictures and data, may
be located?
Also previous Presidents had a scrapbook of memories from their year in office. If you would lend them, I can scan
the pages and return.

CHANGE IN DATE.
There is no regularly scheduled meeting during the month of November; however, our Oct. 28 meeting has been postponed
until Monday, Nov. 4 in order to allow Martha Abbey Miller to speak before our group. We will still focus on the book The
Aviator's Wife, but writer/dramatist Martha Miller will portray Anne Morrow Lindbergh, answer our questions based on
what we read, and attempt to separate fact from fiction. As a gesture from our group we will be giving Martha a small
potted plant and some remuneration to cover her gasoline consumption from Westlake. She is not charging us a speaking
fee. So, if you plan to attend, please contact our hostess Peg Tancreto (482-1294), and bring along $3 to cover our gifts.
Our next regularly scheduled meeting will be on Monday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Barbara Bergman (482-
2610). We will be reviewing the blockbuster written by Colleen McCullough The Touch. As always, her storytelling about
New South Wales is fascinating. Please contact Barbara to let her know if you are coming, as you know she always puts out
fabulous Holiday goodies.
Note: no Exec Comm meeting in December, so this is not a conflict.

AAUW’s Tech Trek in the News
The growing success of Tech Trek is making national news! In the October, 2013 issue of Traditional Home magazine, our
AAUW Science and Math Camp for Girls received attention when Marie Wolbach, a Palo Alto AAUW member, received a
Classic Woman Award. She became involved in the early 1990’s, and has worked to inspire girls in STEM- science,
technology, engineering, and math science, technology, studies ever since. The article describes Tech Trek, and it’s role in
bringing10,000 California girls into the summer program since 1998.
Closer to home, the Fall issue of AAUW’s California Perspective has announced that Camarillo Chapter’s Linda Stinebaugh
has joined Carol Holzgrafe as State So-coordinator of Tech Trek. Linda has worked at the Santa Barbara camp since its
inception, and currently maintains the state database of former campers. Linda’s first goal is to “Make the camp directors’
jobs easier by improving and standardizing Tech Trek paper work. It can then be easily entered into the statewide
database.” And here’s a nice twist. The woman who urged Linda to put her name forth to become the California Tech Trek
co-coordinator was none other than Classic Woman Award winner, Marie Wolbach!

Women in History Manager Trainee Needed
The Women in History project is one of the most effective and successful of our Branch
activities. Kathy Van Slyke has provided the leadership for this program for many
years. Although she is still willing and able to manage it for us, she would like to find an
acolyte willing to learn how to work the administrative side of the project. That trained
helper could then be a replacement or transitional trainer to a new manager, should Kathy be
incapacitated.
This person would need to know Word, and be at least nominally familiar with Excel or a
similar spreadsheet program. Kathy also uses the relational database Access, but can train
you on the actions needed there. She says "Probably the most important characteristics of
such a person is that they basically think logically and they can't be scared of
computers. They would need to become familiar with Access, cutting and pasting data into
Word, and then how to send the data out in an e-mail with attachments." The scheduling is
done in December, and the emailing in January. Other parts of the management process are done
in Feb and April.
Learning to "shadow" Kathy in this work would be a wonderful way to support the Branch and
make a real difference in our community. Contact Kathy for more information.

Answer: 21:00.
If the time was T, then T + 2 is half the minutes to midnight compared
with T + 1. So 1 hour halves the gap. This can only happen at 10pm and 11pm, which makes the current time 9pm.
Title IX, LA Sparks Event
AAUW CA partnered with the LA Sparks professional women's basketball team to "Stand Up for Title IX" while defeating the Phoenix Mercury at Staples Center on September 15. Thanks to an anonymous AAUW Camarillo member, twin Adolfo Camarillo High School Seniors, Geraldynn and Geralynn Leaupepe received star treatment while attending their first professional women's basketball game, and they've earned it. Both girls were Pacific View League Girls Basketball Co-MVPs and all-CIF 1st team selections last year, Geraldynn was named Ventura County Star's Girls Basketball Player of the Year, and both girls have already committed to play for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo when they graduate in June (after weeding through the many offers received). Upon arrival at Staples Center, they were greeted and led to a special room to learn about women's basketball and Title IX from the team owners. For the game itself, their seats were upgraded to the best in the house. Proud mother, Fatima Leaupepe, a campus supervisor at ACHS, said the girls couldn't believe how big the players were. Lynn was inspired by the wisdom of the speakers, and Dynn said, "It was my first time watching the Sparks. I cherished every moment. It is definitely a dream of mine to one day play basketball professionally. Thank you."

AAUW Fund Facts Vol. 7, Issue 3 Chair’s Chat Let us do more, be more, and give more. “2x2s”: Convention Reports and Resources to Help You Reach Your Goals
Hello, all! We are delighted to be starting a new biennium and happy to be co‑chairing this active and vital committee. There
is much going on!
During the 2013 National Convention in New Orleans, each AAUW committee presented two highlights from the previous year
and two goals for the future. These “2x2s” (2-by-2s) gave a concise overview of how our committees and national staff are
working together to empower women and meet specific goals set by the board. Most important, these reports offered a
sneak peek of what’s in store for the coming year. Here are the “2x2s” from the Fundraising Committee, as well as links to
new and updated resources for your state or branch’s work.
Highlights
Completed funding of 13 fellowships and grants and provided scholarships for the National Conference of College Women
Student Leaders to every eligible applicant for three years in a row
Secured the highest possible scores from several charity-rating groups for our financial stability, transparency, accountability,
and impact
Goals
Grow philanthropy to AAUW so that we can increase the number of women who receive our fellowships, grants, and
scholarships from 366 to more than 500; increase the number of girls who attend AAUW science camps from 250 to 350;
increase the number of Elect Her–Campus Women Win sites from 28 colleges to 38; increase funding for Legal Advocacy Fund
plaintiffs; and fight harder than ever to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act
Provide training for the philanthropic work of member leaders through increased personal and professional development and
dissemination of industry best-practice information to branch and state fundraising chairs
The following links lead to resources from the fundraising workshops presented in New Orleans. Among the documents are
How to Find Fundraising Resources Online, the AAUW Funds Diagram, Contribution Report Form, Fundraising Ideas, and IRS
Charitable Contributions Substantiation and Disclosure Requirements.
National Office Update: AAUW Funds Chairs information and resources
What Kind of Champion Are You? workshop materials
Branch Fundraising Ideas: Old and New, Tried and True workshop materials
These documents are designed to help you with your role in achieving the AAUW mission and inspiring others in your branch
to do the same. Our work together is helping deliver much-needed local and national programs to advance equity for women
and girls. Together, we’ll do more, be more, and give more.
Happy fall planning! We hope you have a successful AAUW year and that you will keep us posted on your successes!
