INTRODUCTION
This has been the trend in the area till the present day that why it is the most dominant land use of the area plus the small scale support facilities such as commercial activities like retail shops, restaurants among other land uses
The area is located in Kampala city, Kawempe division. It’s between the western part of Makerere University and then eastern part of kikoni community.
This has influenced the development of kikoni area into a residential neighborhood to provide accommodation for university students
Following the establishment of Makerere University in 1992, there was allocation of various land uses and this influenced the allocation of the staff quarters and institutional use specifically for technology related studies.
AIM OF FIELD STUDY
TO ENHANCE COMFORT, FUNCTIONALITY AND EFFICIENCY IN THE AREA.
OBJECTIVES
To establish sources and state of noise pollution and energy in the area.
To enhance the usage of renewable resources.
To establish environment impact assessment of the area.
PERCENTAGES OF NOISE IN THE SITE
On site, Kimera Road and Sir Apollo Kagwa Road are the main contributors of noise the area, Followed by Economic Activities like Retail Shops, Local Pubs
The figure below represents the noise sources onsite in respect to the Decibel scale. As represented below:

SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE SITE
1. Availability of temporary structures which call for limited compensation
STRENGHT
WEAKNESSES
1. Weak enforcement of planning and building laws
2. Inorganic development leading to informality
3. Community perception on the affordability and usage of renewable source of energy
OPPORTUNITIES
1. Existence of undeveloped land
2. Presence of different land uses which allow the integration of solar and hydro electricity
3. Presence of abundant sunshine which helps us to integrate the usage for renewable source with hydro electricity in the area
4. Presence of institution in the area which eases sensitization of development projects and the importance of solar as well as dangers of noise
THREATS
1. Land tenure that might limit developmental projects.
ENERGY USAGE ON SITE
In relation to energy, the area entirely use only hydroelectricity power UMEME as a common name to the locals.
The use of renewable energy is not effective in the country and in the study area too. This is attributed to ignorance of its relevancy by the residents
Much as UMEME is the dominant energy source in the area, it’s associated with many issues which include load shedding without notice, the monthly costs which makes it very expensive and to a greater extent solar seemed to be a better option than hydro.
PROPOSED PLANNING INTERVENTION ON SITE
Use of solid absorbing materials to reduce noise and a glass perimeter wall so as to enhance vision on the sir Apollo Kaggwa road.
CROSS SECTION OF THE ROADS IN THE SITE
Contn..
Limiting cars that use Sir Apollo road during peak hours. cars having number plates from UAA to UAL should not use the road during peak hours since their engines produce a lot of noise and vibration
USING SOLAR STREET LIGHTS
RESIDENTIAL LAND USE
Existing permanent structures shall be renovated while the Semi-permanent and temporary will be redeveloped
All residential structure in the area shall have a perimeter wall to ensure that the provision of private and shared outdoor space does not compromise the sound privacy requirements of the neighboring units and also use of acoustic materials in the rooms, so as to control noise
Also structures within the site shall enhance soft scaping since it improves on the appearance of the environment.
For the permanent structures such as hostels that are already existing we shall apply retrofit options so as to manage air borne noise using the following mechanism
Hang heavy curtains over glass walls or metal doors and windows
Increase effective height of solid railing Apply sound absorption materials to the underside of
balcony above and inside solid railing
Contn..
New developments in the site should be designed according to the source of noise that is to say the courtyard should never face the source of noise
INSTITUTION LAND USE
The nursery school has been abolished due to the safety of children since this nursery school is near a busy road and in commercials which is not safe for children and according to the physical planning standards, all nursery schools should be within residential for proper safety
Also the temporary born again church has been removed since it produces a lot of noise and for the permanent church shall be integrated with massing and spacing
EXISTING SITUATION
PROPOSALS
BUILDING CONSIDERATIONS IN THESE LAND USES.
Windows
location of windows on quite side of the site, increasing on size of windows in respect to our proposed blocks, using heavier glass and larger air spaces between sheets of glass, of the window is to remain open, there shall be usage of screen to shield the opening form noise source.
Doors
using of solid wood shall be encouraged, providing air tight seals along top, bottom and sides, adding a second door separated by an air space.
vents and holes
There shall be location of ventilation openings on quite side of house
For the walls, increasing of mass light weight constructions with additional heavy exterior materials, like cement
PROPOSED RECREATIONAL AREA
We are utilizing the rooftop effectively by proposing for a recreational space.
This is derived for the fact that we have limited land so as to gazette a recreational area and that we have an opportunity of the rooftop that is not thought of to be used by many designers
We also noticed that these are great contributors to outdoor noise pollution so noise produced by these area shall be absorbed and the other reflected to the upper space.
SOLAR ENERGY we are looking at solar in terms of artificial and natural
lighting.
Natural lighting informs us how to orient buildings to enhance comfort to users.
WHY SOLAR ENERGY
Its Clean Energy, so we able to reduce carbon footprint and slowing down the global warming It has Sustain Energy resource as long as sun still shine
Its Save Money for electrical bills as well as increasing neighborhood value.
GENERAL CHALLENGES FACED WHILE IN THE ORGANIZATION OF SITE
Complex land tenure system for development since the land in the project area is owned by individual land lords
Increased number of vehicles, motor cycles which access the area hence greatly contributing to high levels of noise in the area.
Existence of permanent buildings like hostels (Kann, baskon) to effectively implement the project since they will affect the layout of the model unlike when there are temporary
PROPOSED BI- LAWS
Any developer in the process of renovation and reconstruction or redevelopment shall pay serious attention to interior and exterior designs of the developments to reduce noise produced at all levels.
Only vehicles with specific number plates shall be allowed to use Sir Apollo Kaggwa road during peak hours.
Any client, student, or resident shall be subject to production of specific amount of noise to the surrounding environment.
Sensitization of people on the effectiveness of solar.
