We Learn About God’s People The Bible stories for this quarter introduce young learners to Bible characters who learned to listen to God. Various types of visuals provide interest-holding pictures to help learners imagine what happened in the story action. Resources for other learning aids give additional materials to use.

Visuals: Stand-up figures 1-1 through 1-8

Resources: Items 1-3

Item 1—Room Decoration Banner. Change the learning environment to correlate with the season and theme of the lessons. This poster makes a bright point of interest for the classroom. Children respond to decorations that make them know you care how their room looks.

Item 2—Bulletin Board Figure. “We Learn To Listen to God” is the theme for Unit 1 lessons. Use this figure on the bulletin board as suggested in the teacher’s guide.

Item 3—Memory Verse Display. This listening picture suggests listening to God, the theme for Unit 1. Make the open Bible shape background visual according to instructions in the teacher’s guide. This figure goes on the left side of it.

Prepare the visuals: Cut out the figures and easels. Fold the tabs on easels forward. Glue or tape the

rect angle tab to the back of each figure about 1/8'' from the bottom. The triangle extends outward to make the figure stand on a flat surface. Cut a slit on the heavy black line above the arms on figure 1-3.

Bible Story (Place the tree, figure 1-1, on the floor or table. Set the tent, figure 1-2, about 10'' away from figure 1-1. Stand figures 1-3 and 1-4 in front of the tent.) The shade from the tall oak tree nearby made Abraham’s tent house a little cooler. He sat in the door, perhaps, dozing off to sleep a little. (Put figure 1-5 to the left of figure 1-2, near the tree, figure 1-1. Move Abraham, figure 1-3, toward them as you continue.) Abraham looked up to see three men coming. Abraham ran to meet them. He was very glad to see his three special guests. “Sit here under the tree to rest,” Abraham invited. “I will get you something to eat.” (Change figure 1-5 to figure 1-6. Move Abraham, figure 1-3, toward Sarah, figure 1-4, at the tent.) “Sarah, quickly make some good, hot bread for our guests. I will get the meat.” (Move figures 1-3 and 1-4 behind tent, figure 1-2.) The guests rested under the tree while Abraham got a nice meal ready. (Place figure 1-3 with figure 1-7 inserted in the slit in front of figure 1-6.) Abraham brought a good meal for his special guests. (Remove

figure 1-7 from figure 1-3 and place it in front of figure 1-6.) The men enjoyed tender meat, fresh bread with butter and milk. Abraham was kind to his guests. Then, they told Abraham something wonderful. “Sarah will have a son.” (Replace figure 1-4 near the door of the tent, figure 1-2.) Abraham and Sarah had wanted a son for many years. God promised them a son many years earlier. They believed God. Now, the men promised Abraham and Sarah would soon have the baby. The men knew God was going to send a baby boy to Abraham and Sarah. The three men were angels sent from God. They told Abraham God’s promise. Abraham believed God’s message. He knew God’s promise would come true. (Remove figures 1-6 and 1-7. Move figures 1-3 and 1-4 close together in front of figure 1-2. Add figure 1-8 tucked into the slit on figure 1-3.) It was not long until Abraham and Sarah held their tiny baby son. God told them to name him Isaac. That is just what they did. They listened to God. They trusted Him to keep His promise, and they obeyed what God said to do.

Item 4—Talking Donkey Paper Sack Puppet. Copy the pattern to brown or gray construction paper or let learners scribble color the figure. Cut out both sections of the puppet. Glue the head to the flat bottom of a lunch-sized paper sack. Glue the mouth part under the fold so the sections meet. Make the puppet talk by raising and lowering fingers folded over the inside sack fold.

Bible Story God’s people, the Israelites, set up camp beside the country of Moab. The king of Moab did not want them there. He sent for a man to speak a curse against the people of Israel. A curse was to speak a wish for bad things to happen to another. The king thought a curse against the people of Israel would weaken them so that Moab could drive them out of the land. “Please come, curse these people,” the king’s men said to Balaam.

At first, Balaam would not go, but, finally, he went with them. (Hold up flash card 2-1.) Balaam got on his donkey. Clippity, clop, clippity, clop. The donkey carried Balaam on the long, long trip to Moab. Before Balaam got to Moab, God sent an angel from Heaven to stop him from going to curse the people of Israel. The donkey saw the angel; Balaam did not. The donkey got off the path and went into a field. Balaam got upset with his donkey. He did not know the donkey saw an angel with a sword standing in the path. Balaam hit the donkey to make her get back on the path. When they were going along a narrow path between two walls, the donkey suddenly got scared and jumped to one side. (Change to flash card 2-2.) Balaam’s foot got caught against the wall and hurt it. Balaam still did not see the angel standing in the path. He only knew he was very angry at his donkey. He hit her hard. The little donkey went on. At a place where there was no room for the donkey to go to one side or the other, she saw the angel again. She fell right down under Balaam. (Replace flash card 2-2 with flash card 2-3.) Balaam was so angry at his donkey that he beat her with a stick. Then, he heard words coming from the donkey. The donkey was talking to Balaam! (Alter your voice to speak for the donkey and use the donkey puppet.) “What have I done to you that you have hit me these three times?” the donkey asked. “Because you have mocked me,” said Balaam still angry. “If I had a sword, I would kill you.” “You have ridden on me as long as I have been yours. Have I ever done anything like this to you?” “No,” Balaam agreed reluctantly. (Show flash card 2-4. Lay puppet aside.) Then, the Lord let Balaam see what the donkey saw all along. The angel of the Lord stood in the path. He held a sword in his hand. “I came to stop you because you are doing wrong,” the angel said to Balaam. “Your donkey saw me and turned aside three times. She saved your life.” “I have sinned,” said Balaam. “Shall I go back home?” “Go with the men from Moab, but you shall say only the words the Lord gives you.” So, Balaam went on with the men of Moab. (Show flash card 2-1 again.) Instead of putting a curse on God’s people, Balaam blessed the people of Israel. Balaam learned to listen to God.
