Pre-AP Honors Chemistry Summer Assignment
Overview:
Pre AP Honors Chemistry is a rigorous course that covers all of the materials of Chemistry 1 in greater depth
and with additional topics and additional labs in order to prepare students to be more successful in AP
Chemistry and other advanced sciences. Pre AP Honors Chemistry is a Half Weight Course. We move at a
quick pace and outside preparatory work will be required of you in order to be successful. You will be placed
in a group on Schoology where you will be required to access notes and other materials on a regular basis. In
order to have adequate time to complete all material necessary for our class, we will need to be able to start the
course in July with a basic understanding of some information from science and math. This packet will outline
the details of what these topics are and where to practice them.
Required Materials
The following textbook and materials should be brought to class daily.
Chemistry Textbook
Folder or binder to keep materials
Notebook(s) dedicated to Chemistry only
Blue or Black Pen
Scientific Calculator (Avoid the cheaper
Casio models as they do not have the
functions needed for class)
Summer Homework
1. Periodic Table Introduction: Writing formulas and names for compounds is a huge part of our
curriculum. In order to do that effectively, you must memorize the symbols and the spelling of their
names for the following elements on the periodic table: 1 – 36, 47, 50 – 56, 74, 78 – 88, 90 – 92, and 94.
You do not need to memorize any of the numbers. There is a dynamic study module on Mastering
Chemistry that will help you to review these as well.
2. Polyatomic Ions: These are another important part of naming chemical compounds. Memorize the
names, formulas, and charges of ALL of the ions on the attached handout.
3. Mastering Chemistry: Follow the attached directions to register. This is how you will access digital
tutorials, practice problems, and your digital textbook throughout the school year.
4. Digital Assignment: Visit Mastering Chemistry and click on the Assignment tab
a. You do not have to do the assignments in order, but I would very much recommend that you start
from the top as it includes a tutorial for using MasteringBiology
b. Most of the activities are a review of math skills, graphing, and basic chemistry that you should
know coming into class. They are presented in tutorial form, with a few questions to test your
understanding. The site will prompt you with a hint or refer you to a page in the textbook to find
the information if you get it wrong the first time.
If you need additional help or have a question, send us an email. Have a great summer!
