Artist Statement My name is Phillip Quirós and I am a laborer. Yet this title isn’t only a reflection of my trade, but rather of what I strive to be, a craftsman. I relish in the understanding of a craft, and thrive in attaining the skills and knowledge from those trades that I have yet to discover. For each trade that is mastered, a new door of possibilities and artistic exploration can be opened, escalating me toward being a more technically literate craftsman. And it is this love for those crafts that I attempt to convey within my artwork.
For those who have seen my sculptures, they know that I have never been an artist who can work sporadically, especially when developing compositions. I have to brainstorm, draft out plans, and then test those plans through drawings, paintings, renderings, and moquettes in the hopes of finding if a form is conceptually interesting. This current approach to my art is painstakingly formulated, and yes, overly academic, but I feel necessary when dealing with the non-traditional medium of upholstery & furniture. Which are two things that are normally associated with design and applied arts, but as a conceptual artist, how do you appropriate it to where your concepts take precedence over the aesthetics of this material. With my main focus being on the inversion of furniture & textiles, I attempt to concentrate on not only the form—but also the joinery involved in upholstery. This is an approach commonly used by the artist Martin Puryear; a traditional boat builder who uses his woodworking joinery techniques to create beautiful abstract forms. And it is through this lack of any literal boat building, that Puryear is able to put emphasis the form and his labor. It is my goal as an artist to further develop the use of upholstery within my art, and with further experimentation, economize my ideas to utilize more control over my designs.
