Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

September 29: The Dedication of St. Michael’s Church or the Festival of St. Michael and All the Holy Angels
This feast has been kept with great solemnity on the 29th of
September ever since the fifth century, and was certainly
celebrated in Apulia in 493. The dedication of the famous church
of St. Michael on Mount Gargano, in Italy, gave occasion to the
institution of this feast in the West, which is hence called in the
Martyrologies of St. Jerome, Bede, and others, The Dedication of
St. Michael.
The dedication of St. Michael’s church in Rome, upon Adrian’s
Mole, which was performed by Pope Boniface IV. in 610, and that
of several other churches in the West, in honor of this archangel,
were performed on this same day.
Two Churches were likewise erected in the East, in honor of St.
Michael and other holy angels, from the time when the Christian
worship was publicly established by the conversion of
Constantine, doubtless upon the model of little oratories and
churches, which had been formerly raised in the intervals of the
general persecutions, in which storms they were again thrown
down.
Sozomen informs us, that Constantine the Great built a famous
church in honor of this glorious archangel, called Michaelion, and
that in it the sick were often cured, and other wonders wrought
through the intercession of St. Michael. This historian assures us,
that he had often experienced such relief here himself; and he
mentions the miraculous cures of Aquilin, an eminent lawyer, and
of Probian, a celebrated physician, wrought in the same place.
This church stood about four miles from Constantinople; a
monastery was afterwards built contiguous to it.
Four churches in honor of St. Michael stood in the city of
Constantinople itself; their number was afterwards increased to
fifteen, which were built by several emperors.
Though only St. Michael be mentioned in the title of this feast,
it appears from the prayers of the church that all the good angels
are its object, together with this glorious prince and tutelar angel
of the church.
On it we are called upon, in a particular manner, to give thanks
to God for the glory which the angels enjoy, and to rejoice in their
happiness.
Secondly, to thank him for his mercy to us in constituting such
glorious beings to minister to our salvation, by aiding and
assisting us.
Thirdly, to join them in adoring and praising God with all
possible ardor, desiring and praying that we may do his will on
earth with the utmost fidelity, fervor, and purity of affection, as it
is done by these blessed spirits in heaven; and that we may study
to sanctify our souls in imitation of the spotless angels to whom
we are associated.
Lastly, we are invited to honor, and implore the intercession and
succor of the holy angels. [Rev. Alban Butler (1711–73).

Wednesday, October 9, we will have our next installment
(9) of CATHOLICISM from Fr. Barron The Fire of His Love
Prayer and the Life of the Spirit. In this lesson, Father
Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is centered on
prayer. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
Prayer is the lifting up of the mind and the heart to God.
On pilgrimage to the places where the great saints and
spiritual masters lived, Father Barron explores the different
types of prayer: contemplation; adoration; petition; and
intercession. In telling the stories of Catholics like Thomas
Merton, St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, Fr.
Barron demonstrates how the human person can be
transformed through prayer that manifests a deep, spiritual
commitment centered in Christ.

First Friday & First Saturday Devotions: For over 10 years,
each month, a night vigil has been held in Quincy in honor of the
Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. It began in
July 2002 at St. Boniface under the auspices of the then Pastor,
Fr. John Carberry. When the church was closed, it continued at
St. Anthony still under the care of Fr. Carberry and the
permission of the Pastor, Fr. Tom Hagstrom. When Fr. Carberry
was no longer able to take care of it, Fr. Jeffrey Stone took over,
first at St. Anthony, then at St. Joseph, one of his own parishes.
Fr. Stone is no longer able to take care of this devotion as he has
3 parishes to tend to. Since we are now 2 full time priests, I have
accepted to host this night vigil at St. Rose. It will require a slight
change to our schedule. The 6 PM First Friday Mass is
transferred to 9 PM. The schedule will be as follows:
8 PM Confessions and 15 Decade Rosary.
9 PM Votive Mass in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
After Mass: Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament. During that time various prayers and readings
will be made publicly with a few moments of silent prayer.
12:45 AM Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
1 AM Votive Mass of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Following Mass refreshments in Church Hall.
