With a 20 years’ experience using vacuum technology, Efacec used the know-how for the development of three-phase REVAC circuit-breakers, where the breaking and switching environment is vacuum. This technology is particularly adjusted to functions of this type of reclosing equipment, enabling more switching manoeuvres, helping the device to be more stable and useful in power distribution networks.
The device is environmentally friendly with vacuum switching technology and SF6-free insulation creating added-value for the management of smart power grids.
The REVAC was designed to integrate an automated power distribution system. Reliability on distribution network is enhanced when integrating this equipment. Failures can be detected and isolated by the device and the network can be reconfigured from the control centre or based on distributed intelligence. This type of technology enables to increase the service quality and to reduce the cost associated to outages and line-crew dispatch.
The switchgear is equipped with magnetic actuator, current transformer, resistive voltage sensores, controller, devices for protection, communication and remote control.

Main Concept
The equipment is a three-phase device, each phase with a corresponding vacuum interrupter and epoxy resin housing. Each pole has it’s own magnetic actuator interconnected by a mechanical link that assures synchronized three phase operation. An external pull lever enables manual tripping of the device.
The signalling of state position is on the REVAC lid and it is visible by the operator from the ground.
Voltage is measure by six terminals of the device using resistive sensors, and the current is measured in all phases by toroidal transformers.
Designed for outdoor operation (pole-mounted) REVAC circuit breakers are insensitive to weather conditions, easily assembled with straightforward operation.

The REVAC is equipped with a RCU 220E controller that targets protection and control of distribution assets together with conventional RTU-functionality. The RCU 220 provides not only reclosing function but also feeder isolation and restoration algorithms for loop/ring configurations. The automatic loop restoration control function has the advantage of not requiring communication capabilities to isolate faulty sections and restore power to unaffected segments.
The RCU 220 also provides open IEC 61131-3 programming and full IEC 61850 communication capabilities enabling fast and selective distributed peer-to-peer schemes, integration with centralized feeder control and monitoring systems, adaptive schemes for variable power flows or innovative plug-and-play/engineering approaches. Despite the added-value of advanced functionality and flexibility, RCU 220 is a cost-effective controller, carefully designed for integration with multiple recloser/interrupter vendors, easy installation and straightforward configuration and management.
The RCU 220 is designed for three-phase reclosers supporting either three-phase or single-phase tripping, adapting to different distribution feeder architectures. Includes breaker control with multiple reclose cycles, voltage check and optional synchronism check as a part of the available function set, in addition to sectionalizer / interrupter controller.
The RCU 220 supports several independent stages for main fault detection and protection functions, such as ANSI/IEC standard curves, traditional recloser curves, and editable time-current curves. Eight independent setting groups are available.

Fault Detection and Protection Functions
The RCU 220 can be easily integrated in radial or loop network configurations and includes a flexible loop section isolation and feeder restoration function that implements a distributed self-healing algorithm (that can be further enhanced with peer-to-peer GOOSE messaging). The RCU 220 units are capable of automatically adapting the control algorithms to the new network topology through flexible settings.
The RCU 220 includes a general-purpose event and disturbance recorder; all records are stored in native COMTRADE format. The RCU 220 also includes a fault location function and extended fault reporting. The unit provides six voltage inputs and four current inputs, enabling continuous monitoring upstream and downstream of the recloser. Three-phase measurements and metering are some of the built-in monitoring functions. The RCU 220 also includes the fault location function and extended fault reports.
The RCU 220 was designed according to European and US international standards, and tested by independent laboratories. This product is also CE Marked according to the applicable European Directives. The RCU 220E cabinet, with protection level of IP55, includes all necessary components for recloser application, including batteries, inverters, battery system monitoring and management function, communication interfaces and I/O wiring. The full system was designed in line with EN 61439-1 (2009) and subject to the CE requirements.
The RCU 220 supports multiple communication options (Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX, RS232/RS485, GPRS modem, protocols: IEC 60870-5-101/104, DNP 3.0, IEC 61850 with GOOSE messaging, Modbus), enabling several application schemes. In order to secure the cyber security several proceedings are implemented, such as software and firmware protection, authentication and encrypted communication between IED and external access for selected protocols.
