    ThiswasthepopularnamebywhichthefrigateConstitutionwasknown.ThepoemwasfirstprintedintheBostonDailyAdvertiser,atthetimewhenitwasproposedtobreakuptheoldshipasunfitforservice.Isubjointheparagraphwhich

    ledtothewritingofthepoem.ItisfromtheAdvertiserofTuesday,September14,1830:--

    "OldIronsides.--IthasbeenaffirmedupongoodauthoritythattheSecretaryoftheNavyhasrecommendedtotheBoardofNavyCommissionerstodisposeofthefrigateConstitution.Sinceithasbeenunderstoodthatsuchastepwasincontemplationwehaveheardbutoneopinionexpressed,andthatindecideddisapprobationofthemeasure.Suchanationalobjectofinterest,soendearedtoournationalprideasOldIronsidesis,shouldneverbyanyactofourgovernmentceasetobelongtotheNavy,solongasourcountryistobefounduponthemapofnations.InEnglanditwaslatelydeterminedbytheAdmiraltytocutthe

    Victory,aone-hundredgunship(whichitwillberecollectedboretheflagofLordNelsonatthebattleofTrafalgar,)downtoaseventy-four,butsoloudwerethelamentationsofthepeopleupontheproposedmeasurethattheintentionwasabandoned.WeconfidentlyanticipatethattheSecretaryoftheNavywillinlikemannerconsultthegeneralwishinregardtotheConstitution,andeitherletherremaininordinaryorrebuildherwheneverthepublicservicemayrequire."--NewYorkJournalofCommerce.

    ThispoemwassuggestedbytheappearanceinoneofourstreetsofavenerablerelicoftheRevolution,saidtobeone

    ofthepartywhothrewtheteaoverboardinBostonHarbor.Hewasafinemonumentalspecimeninhiscockedhatandkneebreeches,withhisbuckledshoesandhissturdycane.ThesmilewithwhichI,asayoungman,greetedhim,meantnodisrespecttoanhonoredfellow-citizenwhosecostumewasoutofdate,butwhosepatriotismneverchangedwithyears.Idonotrecallanyearlierexampleofthisformofverse,whichwascommendedbythefastidiousEdgarAllanPoe,whomadeacopyofthewholepoemwhichIhaveinhisownhandwriting.GoodAbrahamLincolnhadagreatlikingforthepoem,andrepeateditfrommemorytoGovernorAndrew,asthegovernorhimselftoldme.
