Inside this Issue
by Joe Munoz
Presidents Trumpet September 2017Since I once again begin writing this column at the last minute, I am watching the coverage of
Hurricane Harvey and seeing the devastation being forecasted for South Texas. On behalf of all
of us in the NTOC, we hope all our friends in the Gulf Coast and South Texas chapters remain
safe and dry – we’ll be here to help if needed.
I want to again thank everyone who attended the August club meeting for helping move our
large agenda along. We had a great turnout almost filling the room at Sonny Bryan’s, and had 4
prospective new members in attendance. We ran through the complete slate of proposed bylaw
amendments, upcoming events recap, NAOC event approval, a significant tech talk and much
more without anyone losing any fingers or toes. Please once again help me in one of my priori-
ties as your President by attending as many meetings as possible and helping spread the word
through the distribution of the business cards handed out at the meeting. Gary Thompson and I
will begin our past member recruitment efforts in September - there’s a lot of old friends in past
rosters that I am really curious about what they’re up to these days!
A topic that repeatedly gets brought up, and was highlighted in a proposed bylaw change, was
the subject of judging criteria for the National events. To this end, we approved a change al-
lowing some modification to our NTOC judging forms/methodology to provide more precise
feedback at our shows, but I also think we have a pretty good knowledge base right here within
our own membership. So I’ll go first – if anyone needs any feedback on or an evaluation on their
car (limited to 68, 70-72 Cutlass/A body cars) I will be more than happy to help with what my
experiences have been with judging at the OCA Nationals. This can be in depth or targeted as
you would like. We have others who are really knowledgeable with other models – let me know if
you would like to offer your services as well. OCA and NAOC also offer targeted model advisors,
but they are not usually able to see your car in person.
Our next meeting will be at the El Fenix in Dallas – NOT the one in Grapevine – details to be
found within this Rocket. Stay safe and Rocket On!

August 2017 Monthly Meeting
The August 2017 NTOC monthly meeting was held August 13 at the Sonny Bryans Bar-B-Q on Campbell Road in Richardson. President Joe Munoz called the meeting to order at 1:35 pm. Joe led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of America. Joe welcomed everyone and asked if there were any new members or guests present. There were 41 members and one (1) guest present. New members present were Rhett Schwartzkoph, owner of a clone 1968 442 Convertible. (Some-times seen in a Channel 11 weather advertisement), and Erick Peril who owns a ’71 Cutlass Supreme Convertible (Viking Blue), Marty Kovach, who has a 1970 Cutlass S hardtop. Our visitor was Jesse Hernandez who owns a 1977 Olds.
Joe announced that the NTOC was represented at James Kopitke’s funeral by Mike and Cindy Payton and Gene and Betty Crowdis. Several members were out of town at the OCA Nationals. Joe said that NTOC had sent flowers to the funeral and sug-gested that we establish a policy of sending flowers or making a contribution to a charity whichever is appropriate. Discussion will be held at another meeting.
Joe said that he had NTOC business cards for members who wanted them to distrib-ute to “other” Oldsmobile owners. He also reported that Bill Furnell has provided several NTOC rosters to be used by Joe and Gary Thompson to contact previous NTOC members to encourage them to rejoin NTOC.
Voting on the Proposed Bylaws Changes
Joe began the process of reading and voting on the proposed NTOC Bylaws changes. Results of the actions taken during the procedure are included in The Rocket under a separate heading. Copies of the August 2017 Revised NTOC Bylaws will be distrib-uted to all members either by email or printed hard copy, as is done with the monthly newsletter, The Rocket.
2017 OCA Nationals
Joe announced the names of the NTOC members who attended the OCA Nationals and the awards received. They were also listed in the August Rocket.
2018 NTOC Zone Show — Dates May 4, 5, 6, 2018
Joe asked for an update on the 2018 NTOC Zone Show activities. Vince reported that the event Chairmen had concluded negotiations with Tanglewood Resort near Potts-boro, Texas and needed club members approval for signing the contract. The room rates are $139.00 per night plus 6.0% tax and 12% Resort Fee. This rate includes two breakfasts for each room night. The contract also requires a $371.00 Group Booking Deposit and a $350.00 plus tax fee for the Awards Dinner room. A motion was made by Vince Giglio to move forward with the 2018 NTOC Zone Show at the Tanglewood resort, seconded by Sheri Munoz. Discussion was centered on the remote location

and where the nearest places to eat other than the resort. Driving time is estimated to be 10–15 minutes from the resort, and the resort has various venues for eating. Other concerns were availability of a “cruise route” which is readily available. A call for vote was made and the motion passed.
Chris said that based on the timing of the 2018 Zone Show the planned 5-day trip to Big Bend was cancelled. Members made suggestions about rescheduling the trip later in the year or in 2019 early before the NAOC – NTOC event.
2019 NAOC Joint event with NTOC Zone Show—June 2019
Joe asked Harat for an update on the 2019 NAOC Nationals planning. Harat pre-sented a report to the membership for discussion and a vote to determine if the NTOC would continue to move forward with a joint NAOC Nationals – NTOC Zone in June 2019. Harat said the hotel contract is signed and NAOC has provided $1500.00 deposit to the hotel. She explained that the finances will be kept separate for each group and the expenses and income will be accounted for based on the registration forms for each event. Judging will also be done according to the registration forms; either NAOC or NTOC, or both if the entrant wants to pay both registration fees.
After the question and answer period Harat called for a motion to continue with the plans to hold the joint event. Motion by Gene Crowdis second by Aron Nance – After discussion a call for vote and the motion passed.
NTOC Fisher House Program
NTOC members again gathered to help the families of veterans in the Veterans Hos-pital. Twenty-two members of NTOC went to the Fisher House on August 5th to provide pasta salads, breads, food trays, cakes, cookies and drinks along with fellow-ship to the families who are staying there while their family member is in the hospital. Helena Isbell has arranged for this to be a NTOC project and said she appreciated everyone for their contribution of food and time. Cindy Payton said that she prepared the gift bags of toiletries for the families and would appreciate donations of shampoo, moisturizer, or other items to put in the gift bags for the next trip to Fisher House. Shampoo, body lotion, mouthwash or other items that are available from hotel rooms are great for this purpose. Helena said that she would like to plan for another day at Fisher House early next year. The members present approved. After talking with Fisher House representatives Helena will let us know the schedule.

NTOC State Fair of Texas Display Day – Saturday October 14
The NTOC State Fair Display Day—Date has been set by the State Fair of Texas as October 14. Insurance has been provided by OCA. A request for car passes and walk-in tickets has been sent to the State Fair Car Corral organizers. This year there will be only one club on display each display day. NTOC members are encouraged to bring their Oldsmobiles and attend on October 14 as we will be the only car club display there. If you are going to display your car at the State Fair on October 14 please con-tact Aron Nance or Gene Crowdis. We will provide the paperwork and hangers for your car so you can enter the fairgrounds without paying. The pass allows you and anyone in your vehicle to enter and park in the display Car Corral. Entry time has not been provided, but it is normally around 8:00 in the morning. State Fair officials want the cars in place before all of the foot traffic starts. If you will be at the September meeting and we have them we will hand out the credentials, otherwise they will be mailed to you.
If you need special arrangements or have questions please let Aron or Gene know. Cars do not have to be show cars, but should be clean and presentable. We are hoping to have at least 25 cars on display.
Treasurer’s Report
Cindy reports that the club is financially sound and the Helping Hands fund has $2084.00. She is working on the new roster and will distribute it as soon as it is finalized.
Member Information
As I am writing this we are hearing about the devastating floods in the South Texas area. Our prayers go out for those affected by the storm that landed on August 25. Please keep the friends and families of those in the Houston, Austin, San Antonio ar-eas in your thoughts and prayers. I talked with Pat Yancey on Friday evening and he said he thought he would be OK, but many of the Gulf Coast Chapter were in areas that would be affected by the flood waters.
Pat contacted me on Sunday evening to let me know that he and Margaret haven’t had any flooding at their home. He also said that Dan and Kaye Neiss are not flooded and Dan is still in remission. The American Legion group where Pat is a member has opened their facility as a shelter for about 100 people. They are providing food and other essential supplies for them.
Note from the Secretary: If you are aware of any health or family issues related to NTOC members please send an email to [email protected] so we can include the information in our monthly report.

Note from the Secretary: If you are aware of any health or family issues related to NTOC members please send an email to [email protected] so we can include the information in our monthly report.

and where the nearest places to eat other than the resort.
