Maintenance Memo
Dear PineRidge Residents,
Just a friendly reminder about our new Maytag Commercial wash-
ing machines.
Please follow the instructions for washing on garments.
Washers: DO NOT overload the washer! Load the top loading
washer loosely, keep the laundry below the top of the agitator or the top row of holes
on the side of the wash basket.
DO NOT dye laundry; DO NOT wash rugs.
SIGNAL LIGHTS: If the unbalance signal light goes on: raise the lid, evenly distribute
the load in the tub, close the lid to complete the cycle. The machine light and use light
goes off when your wash is completed.
Dryers: DO NOT dry articles containing rubber, plastic, flammable fumes, minerals or
oils.
Thank you,
Timothy Foster

A Message from the Foundation
An Impact Update
During the last fiscal year (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019), 958 members of the wider UMC family made
a difference through their donations to the UMC Foundation. The graphic below shows where these
donors directed their support.
Here are a few examples of how your generosity
continues to impact older adults:
38 residents benefit from Gift of Care Circle support
9 Senior Space sites provide social interaction,
learning, art, and wellness experiences
$48,000 in designated trust income aids HomeWorks,
helping their team members provide high quality
home health care and companionship to seniors
Each contribution makes an impact, supporting UMC’s mission of compassionately serving in
community so that all are free to choose abundant life. Thank you!
Congregate Services

ested please come to the office.
Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Here are some things you may not know about Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. according to History.com: He was arrested for
acts of civil disobedience and on trumped-up charges, such as when he was
jailed in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1956 for driving 30 miles per hour in a
25-mile-per-hour zone.
On September 20, 1958, King was in Harlem signing copies of his new book, “Stride Toward Freedom,” in
Blumstein’s department store when he was approached by Izola Ware Curry. The woman asked if he was
Martin Luther King Jr. After he said yes, Curry said, “I’ve been looking for you for five years,” and she plunged
a seven-inch letter opener into his chest. The tip of the blade came to rest alongside his aorta, and King
underwent hours of delicate emergency surgery. Surgeons later told King that just one sneeze could have
punctured the aorta and killed him.
King’s last public speech foretold his death. King had gone to Memphis in April 1968 to support the strike of
the city’s black garbage workers, and in a speech on the night before his assassination, he told an audience at
Mason Temple Church: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not
concerned about that now … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know
tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about
anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

Resident Spotlight - Rosa Rivera By Sally C. Sheola
Rosa Rivera is one of our newest residents, having joined the PineRidge
community on December 2. A retired nurse who worked many years as a
school nurse for special needs children in New York City, she moved here
from Dumont in Bergen County.
Rosa had already completely decorated her apartment for Christmas within two
weeks of moving in, as she loves to go all out for the holiday season. She is
creative and enjoys a variety of arts and crafts, from repurposing furniture to
painting pillows as gifts. She keeps active with community activities, reading,
exercise, music and movies and likes to keep her mind sharp with word games
and crossword puzzles.
Rosa was an avid participant in her church, where she was a greeter and
volunteer, and she plans to join a local church. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she was born in
Puerto Rico and came to this country when she was two-years-old. She grew up in the Bronx and
moved to New Jersey in 2000.
Rosa has three children and seven grandchildren, mostly in Bergen County. She is looking forward to
getting to know more of her PineRidge neighbors.
Check out our calendar and plan to
attend the fun activities, educational
workshops, and special events
happening in our community.
