Dear Parents, Events coming up over the next week include the following: OCTOBER 18 – 2nd regional athletics day 19 – Grade 1 assembly 2.30 gym 22 – 24 Grade 3 Camp Phillip Island 25 – Grade Prep, 1 & 2 free cricket clinic (proposed) 26 – Prep farm excursion (No prep assembly) CLARIFICATION OF ROAD AND CAR PARK Our visitor’s car park has a very limited capacity. At times the gates will be closed indicating that the car park is full. Parents are reminded right hand turns are not permitted into the park for safety of pedestrians and other road users. Visitors who come after the car park is full are required to find alternative places to park. Using the bike lane for drop-offs and pick ups is illegal. We have been informed that driving across the chevron markings and going against the no turn signs will incur both a fine and loss of demerit points. A letter will be forwarded home this week with further explanation. I hope this is helpful. WEBSITE We are pleased to inform you that our up-dated website is now in operation. Please give us a little time to remove old material and check everything is there you might require. Please let us know if there is anything else you would like added that you would find useful. LAST TERM HOT DOG DAY Thanks to all the parents who assisted members of school council in the preparation and serving of hot dogs and drinks for the children on the last day of term 3. The children look forward to this special treat. NEW PREPS VISIT It was lovely to see most of the 2013 preps as they enjoyed games and a bbq in the courtyard on Tuesday afternoon. This year’s prep teachers and other staff ran many fun activities as part of the prep’s transition program. We welcomed many parents too and look forward to further activities this term in preparation for starting school next year. CLARIFICATION OF FRIDAY HALF-DAY STOP WORK A letter was sent home on Tuesday informing parents of the classes that would not be operating between 8.50 a.m. and 12.38 p.m. this Friday. Teachers are expected to resume duty from 12.28 p.m. I appreciate the inconvenience for some families and thank you for your support. Have a good week.

This term we starting our new inquiry, ‘Food people eat is produced in many places and many ways.’ We have been talking about where food comes from and what it looks like when we buy it from the shop. We have started to bring in artefacts about this inquiry and sharing them with our class.
I chose to bring in my horse as my artefact. This relates to our inquiry because sometimes horses carry food like fruit and vegetables around the farm. – by Zoe.
I brought in my toy pig and toy duck. I brought these in as my
artefact because pigs and ducks live on farms - by Bridget.
I brought in my toy hens as my artefacts. I chose these because hens lay eggs on a farm and we buy the eggs from the shop to eat. I have hens at home so I get my eggs from them. – by Hannah

1LG’s Excursion to Ceres!
“On Tuesday the 16th of October we went to Ceres. I made paper and I was a risk taker when I put my hand in the wet water that had small bits of paper inside. We listened to a story and we were in different parts of the story. I was a penguin.” Alfie Beresford 1LG
“I liked the part when we made the paper and we listened to the story. I liked when we were eating snack and lunch. I learnt how to make my own paper using smaller pieces of paper.” Stefan Hurduzeu 1LG
“At Ceres I liked the part where we made the paper and we listened to a story. In the story I was a turtle and we made a river that had oil, rubbish, soap and dirt. I was sad to see the yucky river. My favourite part was making my own paper to take home.” Will Archer 1LG

Middle Learning Community News from 3RB Grade 3 have been working on our new inquiry for the past few weeks. The central idea of this inquiry is, ‘Systems are used to help us get from one place to another’. Grade 3RB have been enthusiastic learners and inquirers and have been working on this inquiry by thinking about different types of systems that can help us get from one place to another. This Wednesday, Sharaj from the Hobson’s Bay council visited our school to discuss the GIS in our district area. During the incursion we were principled and showed great communication skills by listening attentively and asking questions. After the incursion, we used the De-Bono’s thinking hats to brainstorm different features of the Geographical Information System.
White hat (Facts about the GIS system) GIS stands for Geographical Information System. Geo means study about the earth. Cartographers are people who make maps by collecting data. (Cleo, Kelsi, Ana,
Ellysha and Chelsea) Yellow hat (Positives) We learnt how maps are made and there are different types of maps. (Marium, Jaci,
Elias, Joshua, Cortez) Blue hat (What new ideas are possible) We can create our own GIS using different layers. (Bobby, Darby) We can use the knowledge we learnt to create our own GIS. The layers will be creek, grass
area and important landmarks. (Adam, Nebyat) In the coming weeks, Grade 3 will be exploring this inquiry further by inquiring on the similarities and differences between the systems how are they connected to each other.
GRADE 2 INVENTION CONVENTION Last Term the grade 2 classes held an Invention Convention to showcase some of the work the students had been working on. The Learning Intention was to work in partners or individually to design and construct an improvement for a current everyday invention or create a new imaginary item. Entry was by donation and we raised $94 which went towards providing water for a school with Oxfam Australia. Thank you to all those who donated. Here are recounts about the day written by some of the students in grade 2GV. Invention Convention On Thursday grade 2GV went to show our inventions in the grade one building. Some classes came to see our invention 2SL, 1LG, 2LV and 2AS. First we walked to the grade one building. Then some classes came to see our invention 2SL,1LG, 2LV and 2AS. First we saw 2SL’s inventions. The other classes and parents came to see our invention after we saw 2LV. Then we went back then we ate our lunch. It was a good day. By Maria Iqbal
Invention Convention On Thursday the 6th of September we went to the invention convention. At the convention we went to see other people’s inventions. Then we showed our invention to the grade ones. The grade 2’s looked at our invention, and then we had to go back to our class to have snack. I was glad that people looked at my work. By Ethan Craib
Invention Convention On the 6th of September it was the invention convention and Baylen, Kc and my invention was called the classes ultimate underwater car. It was at the grade 1 building at Seabrook P.S. Class 2GV went after lunch. I was soooo excited. After recess, class 2GV lined up because it was their turn at the invention in the grade one building. Baylen and Kc were carrying the ultimate underwater car, and I was just walking with them. Miss Anne held the posters. I just couldn’t wait. When we reached the grade one building Ms. Lazaridis class was still there. Mr Veale (our teacher) told us that we could look at some of 2SL’s inventions. When our class did their inventions another class entered our class and Braxton and Ethan’s invention was the most popular and we were somewhere about second. After a few other classes entered our one as well even some grade 2’s were allowed to check out our inventions. It was awesome when class 2AS( Miss.Salt’s) class went in our inventions because that’s when I started to come out and say…”hey do ya wanna come and check out our inventions!? That was funny! We made donations to a poor country. At the end I felt like it was the same old boring school. By Louis de Witt

My favourite one was a robot and a small robot. Then it was our turn. I was set to go. Lots of people came. They wondered what the flag was. Then I told the children that it was a smacker. Next they went and we took our inventions on the floor. After a while Miss Hallatsch’s class came to look at our inventions. They asked us a lot of questions. After Miss Garro’s class looked at our inventions. They also asked lots of questions. Next was Miss Salt’s class. They didn’t ask me any questions at all. Soon we took our inventions to our classroom. I thought the day was pretty good because it was fun and gave us a lot of questions. By Holly Wedding

Senior Learning Community News Numeracy Report
Year 5 students have been learning about the importance of money through budgeting. Students have been setting budgets for daily and weekly shopping amounts, as well as investigating the costs of a holiday. The children have been enthusiastic about the Money Unit and when asked why, this is how they replied, “It helps me understand how to use a budget” Caleb Wright. “Budgeting helps me because when I get older I will know how to save money.” Devin Sanchez-Mulwa. “It helps me with my understanding and the importance of saving.” Connor Williams. The Holiday Budgeting task requires them to find the costs of flights, accommodations, food and activities. Some students independently extended themselves and started to investigate transfers to and from the airport and travel insurance. Some popular destinations include;; Bali, Russia, Indonesia, Tasmania, France and the USA. Children used a variety of resources such as travel brochures, sites and outlets. A lot of children have been asking, “Are we really going on the holiday?” Not this time kids, but if you start saving and use your budgeting skills, one day you probably could!

CHESS LESSONS - TERM 4—LAST CHANCE
Endre Simon, our chess instructor, is seeking expressions of interest from parents and children to undertake lunchtime chess lessons over term 4 now that the school has reached its budget. Endre is keen to keep up the momentum with children with regular practice and lessons. Endre wants feedback to see if children would like to take part in 2 lessons per week from 12.10 to 1.10 each Wednesday and Thursday across term 4. Lessons are $6.00 per week. Please indicate below if you would be interested in your child participating in these sessions, and return the slip to your classroom teacher.

The School Banking Program is designed to encourage individual savings behaviour and to help children achieve their savings goals. For this reason pooling of tokens is not allowed.
