Glass for architecture and façades
Good architectural glass conserves resources
Modern architecture is increasingly using large sizes of glass as a creative element in buildings and as a way of achieving greater transparency. At the same time, rising energy prices and a sense of environmental responsibility oblige us to conserve resources. The requirements to minimize energy consumption are further increased by new legislation and local regulations. Thus glass must ensure that heat doesn‘t get out of a building‘s interior, and at the same time that the sun‘s rays can be used as a source of energy.
Glass façades with sun protection:Light rooms and a pleasant temperature
Many people worry that the summer sun will heat up the rooms if larger glass surfaces are integra-ted into a building‘s façade. But there‘s no need for concern here – as long as the right glass is used. Protection from the sun‘s rays is integra-ted into the double glazing to prevent precisely this effect, but it still lets enough daylight shine through the glass: only the thermal energy is filtered out. Despite the use of large glass surfaces, energy-intensive cooling systems can be smaller-sized. In this way, buildings with a modern, prestigious appearance can be designed, integrating multi-purpose glass into the façade.
perfektion in glas
Since the first century AD, when the
Romans began to glaze the windows
of the town houses of the upper clas-
ses, a lot has changed in the use of
glass as a material. When glass was
first used as a building material, practi-
cal considerations were paramount, while in
the Middle Ages stained glass windows in
churches portrayed religious motifs. Today,
energy-related and aesthetic aspects are the
main factors influencing which glass to use –
not to mention the new manufacturing
dimensions, which enable complete façades
to be constructed of glass.
Stability plus transparency
Without safety there can be no glass architecture. Especially when glass is used in a façade, safety is a decisive criterium in choosing the glass. arcon offers the right solutions for the challenges your project involves, be it single-pane safety glass, laminated safety glass or other, complex combinations. Multiple use is a prerequisite in today‘s modern architecture.

low-e glassarcon heat insulation coatings with a U value of between 0.6 and 1.1 W/m²K represent an important component in reducing buildings‘ energy consumption and at the same time harnessing the infra-red radiation of the sun to heat the interior using solar energy. arcon low-e glass can be applied to nearly all types of glass used for architectural purposes.
Solar control glassThe latest coating technology with solar factors of 50 % to 18 % ensure that less total energy is allowed through, while light transmission remains high at up to 73 %. Sunbelt solar control coatings can be applied to nearly all types of glass used for architectural purposes.
arcon products for architecture and façades
Safety glassThe production methods used for arcon-dur safety glass ensure that, compared with normal float glass, it is more resistant to impact, breakage, thermal-shock and tempe-rature and less dangerous when breakage, as the glass breaks up into small pieces. arcon-dur has been subjected to the heat-soak-test for NiS crystals, which can lead to sudden fractures, and it is available as safety glass in a number of different versions.
Screen printingarcon-dur offers tempered safety glass that is screen-printed with ceramic paints. Multi-colour printing is possible too. In the case of dual-frit screen printing, the colour varies, depending on whether the pane of glass is viewed from the outside or the inside. arcon-dur tempered safety glass ESG and heat-strengthened glass fulfils the relevant national and international standards, and is weatherproof, abrasion- and scratchproof, acid- and leach-resistant, UV-stable, tempe-rature-resistant and impact-proof. There are no limits to the material‘s versatility: both flat and curved safety glass can be printed, for use either inside or outside.

arcon offers the biggest range of solar control and low-e coatings. Thanks to great manufac-turing penetration and the concentration on two sites in Germany, arcon is able to repond fast and flexibly to customers‘ wishes, offering single-source solutions.
arcon guarantees short delivery times and high product quality, with short coating cycles at its Bavarian factory in Feuchtwangen or in Jena in Thuringia. On-the-spot advice saves time and money, optimising the planning and realisation of projects.
Architects and builders all over the world value arcon‘s reliability as a basis for depen-dable planning. arcon is also an important partner when repeat orders or replacements are needed for older buildings. The good balance between light transmission and sun protection makes arcon glass particularly attractive.
With its arcon topview glass, arcon has revolutionised the production of heat-strengthened glass. Hitherto unavoidable, annoying double refraction, so-called anistropy, is now largely ruled out. This represents significant progress for glass façades: with arcon topview, shimmering green stripes are a thing of the past. A genuine improvement, for on commer-cial properties in particular, glass façades contribute substantially to a prestigious overall appearance. They are a feature of modern architecture, classy, transpa-rent and understatedly elegant. Aesthetic disruptions are obviously counter-produc-tive. Up to now, glass manufacturers and coaters were unable to avoid anistropy, but arcon has now set new standards for windows and glass façades. arcon top-view toughened and heat-strengthened are already in production using the new technology, making arcon a pioneer in the industry. This is why

arcon glass for residential glazing
Windows are the forerunners of
glass façades. When Man first
began to construct dwellings, gaps
were left in the façade so that light
would fall into the interior. In antiquity, the gaps were
closed with panes of glass. 100 years ago, windows still
had a wooden frame around them and generally consisted
of a single pane. Nowadays, windows are complex
systems with multiple uses that represent an important
energy component in a new building.
Saving energy – comfortably
Two main factors contribute to a healthy indoor climate and a sense of wellbeing: the façade of a building, and the windows. Saving energy by insulation with a U value of between 0.6 and 1.1 W/m²K and targe-ted use or avoidance of the interior being heated up by the sun are the two challen-ges that today‘s quality special glass has to overcome.
In nearly all buildings, e.g. sports halls, but also in residential buildings, the issue of window glass safety is becoming more and more important. Different kinds of safety must be considered here: safety where there is a danger of people falling out, the prevention of breakage and safety in the event of breakage, and burglary prevention.
Screen-printed glass represents a deco-rative element for planners and architects that gives them new opportunities to realise their creative ideas. The combina-tion of different properties of glass opens up many new horizons.

Heat insulation glassarcon heat insulation or „low-e“ = low-emission coatings with a U value between 0,6 and 1,1 W/m²K are an important component in helping reduce buildings‘ energy consumption and heat the rooms using the sun‘s infra-red rays. The coating can be applied to nearly all glass used for architec-tural purposes.
Solar control glassThe latest in coating technology ensures that less total energy is allowed through, while light trans-mission remains high. sunbelt solar control coatings can be applied to nearly all types of glass used for architectural purposes.
Safety glassThe installation of windows, particularly for special uses like conservatories, combine the technical and aesthetic properties of ESG. arcon-dur safety glass (tempered safety glass ESG and heat-strengthened glass TVG) combines aesthetics, function and safety, and the manufacturing technique makes it more temperature-resistant, shock- and impact-proof, resistant to bending fractures and less dangerous than normal float glass, as ESG forms grains in the event of destruction. At the customer‘s request, these types of glass can also be fitted with a built-in alarm as an effective protection against burglary.
Screen-printingarcon-dur tempered safety glass can be screen-printed with ceramic paints. It is weatherproof, abrasion- and scratchproof, acid- and leach-resistant, temperature-proof, impact-proof and stable in UV light. So-called dual-frit screen printing, also known as congruent serigraphy, can be used to obtain a different colour effect depending on whether the glass is viewed from the outside or the inside. There are no limits to the versatility here: patterns and motifs can be printed on to both flat and curved safety glass for use either indoors or outdoors.

With its newly-developed topview glass, arcon has revolutionised the production of toughened glass. With topview, which is available as toughened glass and heat-strengthened glass, hitherto unavoidable, annoying double refraction, so-called anis-tropy, is now largely ruled out, and windows can be glazed with toughened glass without visible irisations like stripes, spots and rings.
arcon is one of the few suppliers to offer special glass like ESG with a combination of screen printing and solar control function.
Short coating cycles enable arcon to realise projects quickly and individually. In addition to our high-quality production, this includes efficient planning in cooperation with the customer as well as good packaging and transport. Personal advice ensures a high level of customer satisfaction.
With a U value adapted to the project of 0.6 to 1.1 W/m²K, the heat insulation or low-e glass offers excellent energy efficiency. Heat from the room doesn‘t get outside the building on cold days, even with large window surfaces, and in addition, the sun‘s energy is used effectively.

Motor vehicles have turned into design objects.
The role played by glass has grown considerably from
Gottlieb Daimler‘s invention to the modern limousine.
On the one hand, glass used must be stable, resistant
to temperature and safe, and on the other it also has
to fulfil the highest aesthetic demands. Since high-
speed trains have started whizzing down the tracks,
the glass used for their windows needs to withstand
strains similar to those in aviation.
arcon glass for vehicle construction
Safety glassarcon-dur safety glass (tempered safety glass ESG and heat-strengthened glass TVG) combines aesthetics, function and safety. Depending on the application, arcon-dur safety glass fulfils the relevant norms, be it for train windows, glass used in shipping or other areas. By agreement with you, the customer, we either perform the necessary inspections ourselves, or bring in outside examiners. As our company is certified according to ISO 9001:2008, all our processes are designed to guarantee reliability and quality at all times. The manufacturing technique makes arcon-dur safety glass more resistant to tempe-rature, thermal stress, impact, resistant to bending fractures and less dangerous (ESG forms grains in the event of destruction) than normal float glass.
arcon topviewThanks to this new development from arcon, you don‘t need to put up with annoying optical effects in your vehicle windows any more. If you want your vehicle to look immaculate, you should consider arcon topview glass in future. A patented method optimises the production of coated glass to achieve the highest possible isotropic values.
arcon products for vehicle construction
Right of way for safety and good looks
Not much attention is paid to the windows when people form an opinion of a particular vehicle. Unfairly so. In vehicle and ship cons-truction, glass is an excellent material thanks to its versatility and its different possible uses. In both visual and technical respects, the composition and quality of glass play an important role. The glass only attains a per-fect appearance when arcon‘s topview with minimised anisotropy is deployed.
All vehicle windows have to fulfil safety standards whose importance emerges clearly in extreme situations. The glass has to be very stable and shatterproof. In the event of destruction, the glass breaks up into grains, posing only a small danger of injury.

thanks to which glass production then
grew by a factor of 40. This resulted in
the use of glass for industrial purposes,
and glass embarked on a triumphal
march into the construction industry.

arcon glass for industrial applications
Glass solutions for new applications
arcon develops solutions that go well beyond the normal standard in some cases, or use glass in areas where it hadn‘t been used before. This calls for experienced developers and state-of-the-art manufacturing methods. Both can be taken for granted at arcon – this is how new solutions for custo-mized applications emerge.
Examples of new applications using arcon glass are manifold and can be found in many different branches of industry. One example are shower panels for bathrooms developed to the customer specifications. This is one area where glass is gradually replacing the hitherto predominant material metal: glass simply offers many more design options (full and partial transparency, translucence and lighting).

Glass for mechanical engineering, office furniture and fridges
In mechanical engineering, too, glass plays a role, as can be seen from the example of tempered safety glass with antistatic coa-ting used as a machine housing. Especially when equipping semiconductor plates at high speeds and in extreme cleanroom conditions, electralite ES 5000 is often used. This antistatic coating is also applied to thin plastic sheets that serve as office chair pads. It prevents electrostatic charges that other-wise result from the interaction of plastic wheels with the floor.
Heatable glass and alarm systems
There is a wide variety of applications for heatable glass. These include climate test chambers for environmental simulations with extreme temperature discrepancies, de-misters to prevent condensation, or even bathroom radiators made of designer glass.Alarm systems with arcon glass provide a smooth transition to architecture. An alarm sensor is applied to the tempered safety glass using the screen printing process. If the outer pane of tempered safety glass is destroyed, an alarm is sounded.

The oldest reliably dated glass ves-
sel in history is a glass goblet from
about 1450 BC bearing the name of
the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose II.
Without glass, our modern daily life
is unimaginable. Glass is not simply
present in the form of glass vessels
such as vases, pitchers and drinking
glasses, but throughout the house –
as windows of course, but also in
interior design elements. Glass as
a building material is a fixed part
of every interior designer‘s reper-
toire – whether screen-printed, body
tinted or classically transparent.
arcon glassfor interiors
From kitchens and doors to entire entrance areas
Within your own four walls, at the office, or at the surgery: glass can be found everywhere where elegance and functio-nality are required. Glass stands for bright rooms; in combination with lighting it creates different moods and impressions, and communicates a feeling of space. Horizontal sliding walls and glass doors often distinguish representative entrance halls. Coloured glass reception counters, parts of the conservatory, kitchen tiles, the aquarium or the coffee table – the use of glass in interiors opens up a multitude of possibilities.
Hygienic and easy to clean
Apart from elegance and functionality, low-maintenance materials are needed for interior use. Hygiene is an especially important aspect in doctors‘ surgeries or in the kitchen. The homogenous surface of glass makes it both hygienic and low-maintenance. It‘s easy to clean and disinfect. The glass can be additionally sealed with the arcon special coating “aqualite” to make the surface water-repellent and noticeably smoother.
Safety glass The manufacturing process for arcon-dur safety glass results in a higher bending strength and higher impact- and temperature-resistance compared to normal float glass, as well as improved safety due to the fact that it forms grains in the event of breakage. All safety glass is subjected to a heat-soak-test for flaws and is available in various strengths.
Serigraphy (screen-printing) Using arcon-dur safety glass as a decorative design element gives planners and architects new freedom. The broad spectrum of colours and motifs in glass enables unexpected new features, both inside and outside. Exterior use is possible thanks to the special properties of the screen-printing process, in which ceramic pigments are used in the production of flat or curved tempered glass.
TippiT The TippiT panel is made of premium-quality safety glass with ground edges, and is easily mounted. The glass can be superbly adjusted to suit architectural, interior design or cor-porate identity requirements. The abrasion-resistant ceramic paint is baked into the glass surface at 700° Celsius (1300° F). TippiT is available in a number of different versions.
arcon productsfor interiors
Innovative sensor technology
Glass provides an elegant replacement for normal switches, for example on electrical sockets and light switches, as dimmers, controls for window shades or as a push-button switch. A special electronic sensor is integrated into the glass panel of the “TippiT” switch. Only a light touch of the hand is required to set off pre-defined functions and ope-rations. Without any moving parts and with the easily-cleaned and disinfected homogenous surface of premium quality safety glass, arcon‘s “TippiT” is suitable not only for medical practices, clinics and sanitation facilities, but also for areas of the daily life such as the office or the living room. The panel can be customised to match the company logo, the corpo-rate colours or the colour scheme in the living room.
Safer living with glass in interiors Safety plays an important role in interior design. To avoid accidents, furniture, staircases and normal or swing doors must be resistant to shocks and impact. For special applications, glass doors can be fitted with additional glass bracing. arcon offers custom solutions of tempe-red safety glass that meet the challenges and demands throughout the interior. These can be supplied as either flat or curved glass.
