Dear Fellow Cattlemen,
What a year 2012 turned out to be for those of us who livein the northeast corner of South Dakota!
Ideal calving and plating weather, everything seemed to befalling into place. Then the summer turned dry and wewondered if we would have a crop, enough hay and even grassto make it last. As it turned out, the crops were some of thebest of all time, and the prices were excellent and still are. Yes,pastures got a little short, but all in all, it was good. We canonly hope and pray that 2013 blesses again throughout theseasons.
It may seem odd that we talk about crops in a bull salecatalog, yet there are a numerous similarities. We all knowthat in order to raise the most bushels, we need the best andnewest genetics available. We need to put forth all the besttools and ingredients to do that. Cattle breeding is exactlythe same. One must keep abreast of new technologies, likeDNA and Geneotyping, a subject that requires more spaceand knowledge than the writer of this message has!
We at Pearson Cattle Company are constantly on the searchfor new genetics or combinations of genetics, just like cropgenetics, that can improve the overall quality of our product,
increase the consistency of same, and yield a profitable returnon investment for us and our valued customers.
With cattle numbers being the lowest since 1949, the timesare right for our industry to be the most profitable it has everbeen. We believe that the genetic profiles of the bulls in thissale can help “our customers” do that. Cattle breeding, likecrop breeding, is always evolving. We cannot afford to singletrait select, but like Frank Padilla, our director of breed pro-motion and marketing at the AGA said,“We must do all thingspossible to stay between the guardrails of the road we aregoing down”.
Trials and research projects have proven time and again theeconomic benefits of crossbreeding. The most importantbenefit of crossbreeding is the cow side. We know and haveproven it to ourselves that the Gelbvieh cow is the mostefficient and profitable of all crosses and can be mated to anybreed, and the results will be favorable.
Thank you for evaluating this offering and as always, let usknow if we can assist you in any way. We look forward toseeing you at the sale.

American Gelbvieh Association
New Generation AGA EPDs
e American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.
Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus
Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. is was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.
Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology
For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. ey are now reected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to rst-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving diculty from a sire’s own rst-calf daughters.
Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDse true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA
enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.
Growth Traits are More Reliablee new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight
(YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. is is especially benecial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.
Carcass Traits are StandardizedIn recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass
traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. is change also means that the days-to-nish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable.
For questions or more information contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.

This hybrid bull will have many friends on sale day. He is powerfully built in hismuscle and body skeleton. His sire was used on our 2nd calvers with tremen-dous results. 2036z offers a different genetic package for those that want tomaintain a percentage of Gelbvieh and Angus genetics. The offspring from thisgenetic base should be excellent feeding cattle with a tremendous look.
Probably should have come up with aunique name for 2043z. He is our first bull
to have an actual weaning weight of 1000lbs.Here is a true power performance bull that
grabs your attention in person and demandsthat you study him. A phenomenal physical

If you’re looking for a bull that can produce some heavy weaning calves thenyour look is over. Study this bull’s makeup and you will appreciate his addedlength, smoothness and muscle shape. These 50GV 50MA bulls have a uniquelook about them. They don’t look like Gelbvieh and they don’t look like Maines.Maybe we should call them powered up hybrids.

This Mad Money Bull was a pasture stand out all summer. His length of body, big top and thick quarter continue to get him noticed. I have never seen abuyer in the sale barn look at EPD’s or data on a set of feeder cattle but theyalways pay top dollar for a fancy set of calves. This bull is just the ticket to sirecalves with that kind of market appeal.
