ASTHMA
MANAGING ASTHMA IN WINTER
Now that we are in the middle of Winter, you may find that
asthma is flaring up more than usual. If you or a family
member has asthma the following tips may be helpful:
Visit your doctor for a review of your asthma and
ensure that your Asthma Action Plan is up-to-date.
Carry your medication at all times.
Be aware that cold air can be a trigger for some people,
especially children and older adults. Its effects can be
anticipated and prevented by taking the necessary
medication 10—15 minutes prior to exposure.
Fires can be a real problem for some people who are
sensitive to smoke. Be aware of smoke in your own
home and also chimney smoke from neighbouring
homes.
There is an increased incidence of colds and viruses
which can put increased pressure on the respiratory
system and cause airway inflammation and trigger
symptoms.
ASTHMA PLANS
Does your child have an Asthma Plan? Every student with
asthma should have a written ‘Asthma Action Plan’. This is
important for the school in caring for your child because it
provides up-to-date, detailed information on how to manage
your child’s asthma. This plan should:
Be completed by the student’s parent/guardian in
consultation with the student’s doctor.
Outline how to care for day-to-day asthma (listing
normal medications that have been prescribed and how
often they should be taken).
List key symptoms or special features that indicate the
student’s asthma could be worsening or an ‘attack’ is
developing and the steps that should be taken to
manage it.
List symptoms that are serious enough to need urgent
medical assistance (i.e. ambulance).
List the Asthma First Aid procedure for an asthma
‘attack’.
ASTHMA PLANS cont.
List the name and contact number of the parent/
guardian, emergency contact and student’s doctor.
Be easily accessible for all school staff.
Be updated annually or when a student’s asthma
changes significantly.
If an ‘Asthma Action Plan’ is not provided, school staff will
follow the Victorian School’s Asthma Policy for asthma first aid
which is a standard first aid protocol.
For a copy of a School Asthma Action Plan you can contact the
school office. For further information about asthma you can call
the Asthma Helpline on 1800 645 130 or visit the Asthma
Foundation of Victoria’s website – www.asthma.org.au
Tips for staying active this winter!
Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) is a common trigger for
asthma. However, it does not need to be a barrier to Students
participating in sports and physical activities.
Here are some tips to help prevent EIA in students:
Before Exercise take reliever medication 5 - 20 minutes before
warming up.
Warm Up before exercise as normal.
During Exercise watch for asthma symptoms and adminis-
ter reliever medication if they should occur. Only return to exer-
cise if symptoms are relieved. If symptoms appear again, ad-
minister medication again, until they are relieved. It is not rec-
ommended that the Student should return to the sporting activi-
ty after a second occurrence of asthma symptoms.
After Exercise cool down as usual. Note that asthma
symptoms can present up to a half an hour after exercise has
stopped. Ensure reliever medication is still easily accessible
should it be required.
Other things to remember:
Ensure all students have current Asthma Action/Care
Plans
If possible make activities that are scheduled for the
night indoors as the drop in air temperature makes air
colder to inhale and acts as a greater trigger.
Encourage students with asthma to participate fully!
HUOBIAOJING PRIMARY SCHOOL VISIT
This week, we welcomed 12 students and 3 teachers from Nanjing, China. On Wednesday, they
attended a reception at Government House with Paul Clohesy and our School Captains, Eden and
Camdyn. The reception was in celebration of the 40th anniversary of students visiting Melbourne from
China.
They are in Patterson Lakes school during their summer holidays, a vast difference from 41 degrees in
Nanjing to a Melbourne winter. Whilst they have been at Patterson Lakes, they have experienced
Australian classroom programs and have developed friendships which will continue throughout the
remainder of the year as we continue to Skype with them once they return to China.
I would like to thank the staff and the Dargan family for their generosity in opening their classrooms and
their homes to support this very worthwhile cultural experience for our students.
LANGUGES DAY
I would like to congratulate Mrs Mangone, our Spanish Languages teacher, for an outstanding
Languages Day event. I would also like to express my appreciation to the families for getting into the
spirit of the day and allowing their child to dress in national costume or colours.
RoboCup Junior Melbourne Regional Finals – WINNERS!
Caitlyn S, Caitlyn M and Tom W all from Year 5 have been preparing robots for the RoboCup Junior Dance
competitions. It was a full day starting at 9:30am and concluding with the announcement of the winners
around 3:30pm.
Our team had been working on their robots, designing, building and programming them at lunchtimes with
Mrs. Bearup. It was a lot of hard work discovering how to engineer multiple things to move from one
rotating axle. It was even harder still programming the commands to control how all these motors and
gears worked, as well as power them, to get exact timings to fit our chosen music theme. Some features
are controlled by sensors and uses this information to turn off or on certain movements. Our music and
theme is ‘Brand New Key’.
Tom’s robot YoYo boy head does bobs, waves its hand and a plays with a YoYo that also goes up and
down as it moves, choreographed to fit with the music.
Roller Girl, Caitlyn S’s robot uses sensors to follow a curvy line and another sensor that looks for a blue
colour along that line to turn off and on her snappy hands. She also has legs that walk and a head that bobs
to the music.
Caitlyn M is responsible for the dog. It reacts to an infra-red ball and wags its tail each time the ball is
moved past the infra-red sensor. The house is also controlled by the robot dog.
The house is an animatronic device that has a windmill behind it that turns displaying pictures to match the
words of the song at the exact moment they occur in the song. It has wobbling eyes and a twirling
moustache that is all linked to the motions of the windmill.
The children were scored on two performances and an in depth interview about their programming and
engineering knowledge. They scored well enough to make it to final play offs. It was a nervous wait for the
announcement at the end where they announced us as the Primary Division outright winners!
Thanks to the parents for their support of this event. Next stop for our RoboCup team and their robots is the State Final at Melbourne University on 15 August. The students still have some tweaking to do to improve the robots and their programming, as they are not perfect yet!
What a wonderful celebration of our Spanish program! The children were happy, well
behaved and fully enjoyed the educational and cultural activities provided.
The costumes and colours they wore looked fantastic. Thank you to the parents and
grandparents for their effort and creativity.
The day began with some special performances, where the students sang various
Spanish songs. It was then time for the activities. Students listened to the story of the
Tooth Fairy and the Spanish counterpart, El Ratón Perez. They experienced the
celebration of Carnaval by making props, dancing and creating a song for the end of the
day parade. It was great to also see the students visiting from China participating in
these activities. Mr Manuel Moreno Alcauce, Education Consultant from the Spanish
Consulate in Melbourne, spent the day with us and was very impressed with the
students’ performances.

Dear Parents/Carers
The date set for our schools’ second working bee this year is for Sunday, 6th August 2017.
We are looking forward to having as many families involved as possible to help with a tidy up of the school.
The working bee will commence at 10:30am and conclude with a sausage sizzle at 12:30pm. The school will provide sausages, soft drinks and water at no cost to helpers. We will be meeting at the undercover area outside the Staff & Science Rooms.
The Facilities and Grounds committee have identified a number of items that need attention around the school that we are hoping to achieve. These include:
Weeding around edges of paths and buildings.
Trimming back of trees hanging over paths & seating areas.
Clearing of garden beds.
Clearing of drains.
Redistribution of softfall mulch in playgrounds.
Sweeping dust & cobwebs from portable classroom walls & walkways.
Washing some walls of portable classrooms & steps where needed.
To complete the tasks we are hoping that families may be able to supply some tools, i.e. pruning shears, bow saws, secateurs, yard brooms, rakes, spades/shovels, wheelbarrows.
If you are able to assist with the working bee, even for a small amount of time, could you please indicate on the return, slip below or email me at [email protected] by Thursday, 3rd August 2017.
Regards,
Paul Clohesy
Assistant Principal (on behalf of the Facilities & Grounds Committee)

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle! On Sunday August 13, PLPS will be holding a sausage sizzle at Bunnings
Carrum Downs, to help raise funds for improvements to the school hall.
To make this happen we need a team of volunteers from the school community. People to
cook the sausages, serve customers & have some fun in the process!
The event will be running from 8:00am to 4:00pm & we would like a team of 5 people manning
the sizzle at all times. Unfortunately, due to legal requirements, no one under the age of 15
may volunteer to help.
Please indicate on the form what time suits you best. Help for an hour, or the whole day!
There are forms at the front office as well for you to fill in your details.
If you are not able to help on the day, any donations of sausages, drinks or bread would be
greatly appreciated.
Thank you

WEEK 25 – FIVE Es OF LEARNING
Wellbeing Element – Engagement and Achievement
Character Strength – Open-mindedness
While most students strive to ‘do the right thing’ by applying themselves to their learning,
unfortunately their efforts are not always rewarded because they don’t know how to ‘do the
thing right’. They need to be taught how to learn and think smarter in a variety of ways.
To quote Abraham Lincoln, “if I had nine hours to cut down a tree, I’d spend six hours
sharpening my axe.”
Habits of Mind and Thinking Tools are strategies we use to sharpen students’ learning and
thinking. While there are numerous user friendly and creative thinking tools on the website,
the Five Es of Learning is a very effective one to enhance students’ learning approaches.
Parents spend thousands of dollars having their children coached in a wide variety of pursuits
to improve and develop their techniques that will see their performance enhanced. These
pursuits include ballet, playing musical instruments, different sports and so on. To improve
their learning habits students need to be coached to learn how to learn better; we can’t rely
on them randomly picking up good habits.
Ballet dancers, for example, are taught explicitly how to move and then follow it up with hours
of training; why should learning be any different?
The focus this week is on introducing to students the Five Es of Learning, which provides them
with a step by step guide on how to learn and think with greater depth and clarity. Teaching
students methods such as the Five Es may light a fire in their curiosity to use more thinking
tools in their learning.
