Night Wing Tarp Tent

The Night Wing tarptent is the shelter for the committed ultralighter. It’s simplicity, design and space provides maximum protection for a minimum of weight.

Its centenary ridgeline makes for a taut shelter. With a full mesh skirt, large back window and zippered door, you’ve got full bug protection.

Both the front and the rear cantilever out from the sleeping area. This provides excellent rain protection to the interior of the shelter while maintaining maximum ventilation. The front overhang gives you a place to cook sheltered from the rain.

With a front height of 45” and rear height of 30”, you’ve got excellent headroom. The 28 square feet of floor space is more than ample for the solo hiker.

The Tripod front and rear setup makes the shelter exceedingly strong and stable. Combined with steep sidewalls, the Night Wing handles snow loads with ease.

Pattern Usage You may use these patterns and instructions to create Night Wing shelters for your personal use only. You may not create shelters for resale to anyone else.

Difficulty: Moderate With few panels, the Night Wing is easy to sew. Due to the complexity of the patterns, some difficulty may be encountered creating full size patterns.

• ½” Black Gross Grain: 6 – 4” pieces

• 1” Nylon Webbing : 2 - 3” pieces

Night Wing Tarptent Assembly These assembly instructions are extremely terse. Someday I hope to return and rework them with better explanations and photos documenting each step.

The use of binding tape on the front and rear edge seams and the ridgeline is very important. These seams take the bulk of the stress of the shelter and minimize the stress on the canopy panels. Reducing the stress on the canopy lengthens its life.

1. Fold over and sew the inner edge of the three skirt pieces plus the back window piece.

2. Sew on a piece of Velcro Loop on the front edge of long skirt panel.

3. Sew on a piece of Velcro Hook to the left edge of the Front Door skirt panel.

4. Sew the each of side skirt panels to the canopy panels. Use the type of seam described on the Canopy Panel drawing..

5. Sew the top both canopy panels together. Make sure the seam is on the interior of the tent.

6. Bind the ridgeline seam with binding tape. The binding tape is critical for strength of the tarp.

7. Sew the #3 Zipper to the left edge of the Front Door.

8. Sew the Velcro Tie Backs to the right edge of the Front Door.

9. Sew the back door panel to the canopy. The seam where the canopy and the mesh meet should be sewn with the raw edge pointing to the outside. The seam joining the mesh skirt should be sewn with the raw edge inside of the tent.

10. Bind the exterior seam with binding tape.

11. Sew the front door to the canopy similar to the rear window. Then bind the exposed seams with binding tape.

12. Attach 4 loops of ½” X 4” Gross Grain to each corner of the tent. Sew the loops on to the end of each seam binding.

13. Place a grommet half way on each of the 2 3” pieces of webbing.

Page 4: Pattern_NightWing Tarp Tent

14. Sew the remaining two loops of Gross Grain to the ends of each piece of webbing.

15. Sew the two webbing pieces to the apex of each end of the shelter.

16. Cut the guyline cord to the appropriate length and attach each end of the tent.

Good Luck!
