Hearst Elementary Fall Festival
“I had a great time volunteering at Hearst Elementary Fall Carnival! It
wasn't like any other elementary carnivals we have done before where
we were in charge of game booths; this time we experienced new jobs
that were very interesting. For example, I was melting caramel and
cutting Oreo crums with many other cadets whom I got to know better
and bonded closer with. I really enjoyed this opportunity to serve the
community with my ROTC friends!”
-c/Li, Shurui
How was Hearst Elementary?
“On Saturday I helped out at an Elementary school. I volunteered with
ROTC. I helped set up tent-like shades. Later on in the day I helped
run the cake walk. Some things I did were take tickets, pull numbers
and run cakes. I felt good about helping the community. I spent 6
hours helping the community. I was happy to do so as it was very
fun.”
-c/Nguyen, Michelle
What time is it? Service time! November 8, 2014 our
NJROTC cadets helped set up the booths and run the
games at Hearst Elementary’s Annual Fall Festival. The
festival was similar to those held at Gage and Northmont.
As a result of the low number of booths and the large
number of cadets, there were some complications. Every
cadet was required to work in shifts so they could switch in
and out of with other cadets. Most cadets worked at the
booths and some helped with maintaining the water and
food supply for the concession stands. Thank you to the
cadets that took time out of their Saturday to help out!

Environmental Clean up November 13, 2014 was the designated day for our NJROTC
program to help clean up the school. Cadets went to each classroom to
collect and recycle any paper the teachers had accumulated. It was a fun
experience. Remember, you can make a difference and help the
environment everywhere, not just at school.
On a more serious note, protecting the environmental should be a
priority. As the presentation c/LTJG Danh gave about Recycling on
November 21, 2014 showed, many animals are affected by our excess
trash. The animals can’t tell the difference between food and trash.
“Once they eat the trash, they’re dead. Their life is over,” said cadet
Danh. So please, actually throw your trash away. Also, keep in mind
that there are different bins for trash and recycling. Do not put trash in
the recycling bin. Recycling bins are usually found in every classroom
on campus. They are either blue or black with the word recycle on it.
Another thing that needs to be considered is electronics. Most
electronics cannot be thrown straight into the trash because it has
harmful effects. It affects the environment’s air when they try to dispose
it. Instead take it to an E-waste recycle center/event. Our school hosts
these events occasionally to help dispose unwanted electronics. Lastly,
donate your clothes instead of throwing them out! Try to protect the
environment and help keep it clean. Thank you.
What you can do:
Recycle bottles, cans,
and paper
Do not litter
Use recyclable bags
Put things in the right
bin
Donate your clothes
Recycle electronics
through e-waste
Plastic Bag Ban Act California is the first state to ban single use plastic bags in grocery and convenience
stores. The reason to result in this was the pollution on the streets and waterways. Plastic bags
will be taken out of grocery stores in 2015 and convenience stores and pharmacies will be in
2016. This encourages grocers to use reusable bags or pay a 10 cent price for paper bags.
