Entering Grades: 6 - 8 The William Paterson University 21st Century Academic Program for Paterson Public Schools offers our middle school students academic and enrichment courses that are high quality, highly motivating, engaging and enhance learning for the students on the campus. Transportation is provided to and from the during the program. The students are picked up from their home school to the university and then returned to their home school at the end of the classes. The hours of the program are from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. The program operates in sessions. In the spring it runs on Saturdays from March 26, 2010 through June 19, 2010. The Summer session days are as follows; July 6,7,8,9,12,13,14,15,19,20,21,,22,26,27,28,29,30 August 2,3,4,5,6.

Entering Grades: 2 - 8 The Paterson Public School District’s Intensive Spanish/English Summer School Program will provide support to students that are currently enrolled in the Bilingual/ESL program during the regular school year in grades 2nd -8th Grade. Classes will be scheduled to meet for 20 days. The students will attend from 8:00a.m.-12:00p.m. inclusive of Breakfast from 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. The program’s focus will be on developing and strengthening the English Language Learners reading skills while providing the students with the necessary social survival skills needed to advance within the Speaking and Listening Domains and transitioning into the Reading and Writing. The expectations will be clearly outlined through the use of WIDA (World Class Instructional Design and Assessment) Standards Rubrics in the area of writing. This intensive program seeks to further develop the academic English Language Skills needed by students to successfully achieve English Language Fluency in order to reach the proficiency level 6 descriptors required for success throughout all content area instruction as outlined in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS). The students’ achieving proficiency levels 4-5 will in turn facilitate the transitioning of the student into the Intensive English Literacy Program that is also housed at the same site and will facilitate a seamless transition into said Intensive English Literacy Program.

McNair Summer Science Academy

Dates: 7/6/2010 7/30/2010 Time: 8:00 am - 2:00 pm Entering Grades: Rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade students The Dr. Ronald McNair Academy for Science is designed to provide 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with an academic experience that expands, promotes and supports learning and high achievement in Science, Mathematics, Language Arts, Technology and other key disciplines through an integrated curriculum that is challenging, viable and relevant. McNair Academy will provide many opportunities for students to experience exciting hands-on, inquiry-based, problem-solving science activities in areas of life, earth and physical sciences. These young budding scientists will wear laboratory coats; learn key scientific concepts while getting first hand experience using scientific equipment such as beakers, test tubes, graduated cylinders, pipettes, wires, motors, switches and more. Students will also have opportunities to solve scientific problems using foundations of mathematics using state-of-the art scientific data capture software that support the scientific process. These academic experiences will be implemented through small learning environments that emphasize strong and ongoing relationships among students, faculty and staff that leading to high academic achievement for all students. Teachers will from the various scientific areas will be making presentations to students relative to career goals. Students’ academic performance will be assessed through a rubric that measures their understanding and literacy in science. The program will conclude with student presentations of their work through a seminar format. Parents, administration, and other community stakeholders will be kindly asked to attend.
All lessons and activities are aligned to State of New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards for Science, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Technology.

Special Instructional Programs
Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CEIS)

Dates: 7/1/2010 8/10/2010 Time: 8:15 am - 1:30 pm Entering Grades: K - 5 General Education Students throughout the District, in grades 1-5, who are recommended for remediation are selected based upon recent assessment data and are invited to attend the Coordinated Early Intervention Services Program (CEIS). This program is designed to provide instructional support, remediation and behavior interventions, which will enable students to be more successful in general education classes. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Students and continue their instruction in the summer (2010). The program will include counseling services for those students who are recommended for this.
In order to determine which kindergarten students should be eligible, input from kindergarten teachers will be sought. Factors such as achievement levels, attendance, developmental levels and/or behavior problems will be considered.
Instruction in Reading and Math strategies which have been successful in increasing student performance will be stressed.
Students who attend one of the summer schools during the regular school year will attend their regular school. Students whose regular school will not be offering the program will be assigned to the school closest to their home.
Parent discussion regarding academic progress of their children will be available if needed.

Entering Grades: 9 - 12 Paterson Public School's New Jersey Youth Corps receives fundng to operate 12 months per year. Corps members will be participating in a summer work experience during July - August of 2010 which will engage students in a safe and productive environment. The work experiences will include but not be limited to camp counselors in arts and crafts, food services, activity coordinators and maintenance. The interaction with staff members and community involvement provides the students with traditional training and builds relationships in the community.
The Summer New Jersey Youth Corps Program will keep current students as well as future Youth Corps students and other interested students in the Paterson Public Schools employed in a safe and substance-free environment. All activities will be supervised by experienced staff members of the Paterson Public School District. Transportation will be provided on 14 passenger NJYC vans driven by appropriately licensed staff members or bus passes will be distributed.
