Anaheim-Santa Ana-Irvine, Calif. (10,500 jobs, 13 per-cent) added the most construction jobs during the past year.Other metro areas adding a large number of constructionjobs include Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif.(9,000 jobs, 12 percent), Chicago-Naperville-ArlingtonHeights, Ill. (8,900 jobs, 8 percent), and Los Angeles-LongBeach-Glendale, Calif. (8,100 jobs, 7 percent). The largestpercentage gains occurred in Weirton-Steubenville, W.Va.-Ohio (60 percent, 900 jobs); Huntsville, Ala. (18 percent,1,400 jobs); Grand Rapids-Wyoming, Mich. (16 percent,3,000 jobs), Saginaw, Mich. (16 percent, 400 jobs) andHonolulu, Hawaii (14 percent, 3,800 jobs).
The largest job losses from December 2014 to December2015 were in Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (minus 4,300jobs, minus 6 percent), followed by Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia, Mich. (minus 1,800 jobs, minus 8 percent); Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas (minus 1,600 jobs, minus 1 percent) andMinneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn.-Wisc. (minus1,600 jobs, minus 2 percent). The largest percentage declines
for the past year were in Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula (minus14 percent, minus 1,200 jobs), Florence-Muscle Shoals, Ala.(minus 14 percent, minus 500 jobs), Fort Smith, Ark. (minus14 percent, minus 1,000 jobs), Anniston-Oxford-Jacksonville, Ala. (minus 13 percent, minus 100 jobs),Hanford-Corcoran, Calif. (minus 13 percent, minus 100jobs) and Walla Walla, Wash. (minus 13 percent, minus 100jobs).
Association officials said the new metro jobs data is con-sistent with the results of the group’s 2016 ConstructionHiring and Business Outlook. Seventy-one percent of firmswho participated in the Outlook reported they plan to expandtheir headcount this year. Yet a similar share, 70 percent,reported they are already having a hard time finding enoughqualified workers to fill positions, which is why the associa-tion continues to push for measures to recruit and preparenew construction workers.
“Most construction firms expect to continue expandingthis year,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chiefexecutive officer. “The biggest challenge many firms are fac-ing is finding enough workers to meet available demand.”
