We have been down this path before!

And each time we needed a little time to learn the new system. And each test added a new layer of rigor and a new set of expectations for our students and for our teachers. And each time we have succeeded! And we will again…

What does “more rigorous” mean? The questions are more complex and require more thinking. What is most important for a student to learn in a grade level will have more questions on the test. The test is longer.

What are the cumulative score requirements?

A student must achieve a cumulative score that is based on the number of EOC assessments in each content area required for his/her graduation plan.

12

Page 13: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

Cumulative Score – Phase-In 1For example: Students who began taking STAAR EOC in the 2011-2012 school year and are graduating under the Recommended Plan will need a cumulative score of10,500* in each of the following subjects:Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. and a cumulative score of 11,250* in English (Reading and Writing). *These cumulative scores will be phased in until 2016.

13

Page 14: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

Cumulative Score for MATH, SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES –

Phase-In 1Students must earn a cumulative score of 10,500 in EACH of the three content areas: Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Each content area has three EOC tests.Students must earn a score of 3500 on each test within a content area to equal a cumulative score of 10,500.

3500 x 3 = 10,500 for each content area.

14

Page 15: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

Cumulative Score ELA– Phase-In 1

Students must earn a cumulative score of 11,250 in the English EOC

Each English test is comprised of two tests: Reading and Writing

Students must earn 1875 on EACH of the Reading and Writing tests to earn a cumulative score of 11,250

1875 x 6 = 11,250

Phase-In 1 with Cumulative Score Requirements

Page 17: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

What are the cumulative score requirements?

A student must achieve the Minimum EOC score or above for the score to count towards the student’s cumulative score.

Only achieving minimum score on all three tests within a subject area is not sufficient to earn the required cumulative score.

17

Page 18: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

Mathematics Example – Phase-In 1Since the Minimum Score does not equal a satisfactory performance, a student only meeting the minimum score within the subject of math would not reach the required cumulative score. If a student earns:

3371 in Algebra I 3362 in Geometry 3350 in Algebra II

Cumulative score = 10,083 which is not enough to graduate.

The student must have 10,500 to graduate.18

Page 19: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

Are the cumulative score requirements the same for all students?

Cumulative score requirements will vary by student depending on

– Graduation plan (RHSP and DAP versus MHSP)– Whether course credit was earned prior to spring

2012– Whether course credit was earned outside of Texas

public schools– Whether he or she is receiving special education

services

Cumulative score requirements do not apply to students taking STAAR Modified or STAAR Alternate.

19

Page 20: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

•STAAR EOC is offered three times per year:December, May* and July

•Students who do not earn Level II Satisfactory on any STARR EOC will be required to retake that test at the next test administration.

*English I, II, & III Reading and Writing EOC tests are given in March for the May administration.

20

Page 21: Overview of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Program

Students may opt to retest during any EOC test administration period to improve their cumulative score in any subject area.

The highest score counts towards the student’s cumulative score.

21

Who is required to achieve specific performance levels?

Phase-In 1

Students graduating on the Distinguished Achievement Program must meet Level III: Advanced Academic Performance (postsecondary readiness) on

English III (Reading 2135* and Writing 2155*) Algebra II (4080*)

• These scores apply to the 2012-2013 school year only. 22
