SECTION 1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1.1 GENERAL
This sec tion o utlines the ne ce ss a ry prec autions for properand sa fe mac hine usag e and ma intenance. In order to
promote proper ma chine usag e, it is ma nda tory that a
da ily routine is esta blished ba sed on the c ontent of this
ma nual. A ma intenance program, using the information
provided in this ma nual and the S ervice and Maintenance
Manual, must also be established by a qualified person
and must be followe d to ens ure that the mac hine is sa fe to
operate.
The o wn er/use r/op era tor/less or/less ee of the ma ch ine
sho uld no t ac cept o perating respo nsibility until this ma n-
ual has been read, training is accomplished, and opera-
t ion o f t h e ma c h in e h a s b e e n co mp le te d u n d e r th e
supervision of an experienced and qualified operator.
The o w ner/us er/o pe rato r/les so r/less ee m us t be fa milia r
with S ec tions 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 of ANSI A92.5-1992. The se
se ctions c onta in the res pons ibilities of the o wner, user,
opera tor, lesso r, a nd less ee c onc erning sa fety, training,
inspec tion, ma intenance , a pplica tion, a nd o peration.

1.2 PRE-OPERATION
Operator Training and Knowledge
The Operators and Sa fety Manua l must be read a nd
understood e ntirety before operating the ma chine. For
c la r i f ica t ion , ques t ions , or addi t iona l in format ion
rega rding a ny port ions o f this ma nual, contac t JLG
Indus tries , Inc.
An operator must not accept operating responsibilities
until adequate training has been given by competen
and authorized persons. Allow only those authorized and qualified personnel to
operate the machine who have demonstrated that they
understand the safe and proper operation and mainte
nanc e o f the unit.
Read , unde rstand, and obe y a ll DANGERS, WARN
INGS , CAUTIONS, a nd o pera ting instructions o n the
mac hine a nd in this ma nual.
Ensure that the machine is to be used in a manne
which is within the s cope of its intended app lica tion a s
determined by J LG.
All ope rating perso nne l must be familiar with the e me r
g e n c y c o n t ro l s a n d e m e r g e n c y o p e r a t io n o f th e
mac hine a s s pec ified in this ma nual.
Read, understand, and obey all applicable employer
local, and governmental regulations as they pertain to
your utilization and application of the machine.
Workplace Inspection
Precautions to avoid all hazards in the work area mus
be ta ken by the user before operation of the mac hine.
Do no t operate o r raise the platform from a pos ition o n
trucks, trailers, railwa y c a rs, floa ting vess els, sc affolds
or other equipment unless the a pplica tion is a pproved
in writing by J LG.
Before operation, check work area for overhead haz
ards s uch as electric l ines , bridg e cranes , and othe
potential o verhea d obs tructions.
Check floor surfaces for holes, bumps, drop-offs
o b s t r u c t io n s , deb r i s , c o n c ea led h o les , a n d o t h e
potential hazards.
Chec k the work area for haz ardo us loca tions. Do no
o p er a t e t h e ma c h in e in h a z a r do u s en v i r o n men t s
unless approved for that purpos e by J LG.
Ensure that the ground conditions are adequate to
support the maximum tire load indicated on the tire
loa d de ca ls loca ted on the cha ss is a djacent to each
wheel.
Do not operate the machine when wind conditions
exc ee d 30 mp h (12.5 m/s).
This m ac hine c an b e o perated in nominal amb ient tem
peratures of 0oF to 104oF (-20o C to 40o C). Co nsul
JLG to optimize operation outside of this temperature
range.

Machine Inspection
Do not operate this machine until the inspections and
functiona l checks ha ve bee n performed as spec ified in
the Prepa ration a nd Inspection sec tion of this ma nual.
Do no t operate this m ac hine until it has bee n se rvicedand main ta ined ac cording to the ma in tena nce a nd
inspection requirements as specified in the machine s
Se rvice a nd Maintena nce Manua l.
Ensure the footswitch and all other safety devices are
ope rating p roperly. Mod ifica tion of these d evice s is a
safety violation.
MODIFICATION OR ALTERATION OF AN AERIAL WORK PLAT-FORMSHALL BE MADE ONLY WITH PRIOR WRITTEN PERMIS-
SION FROMTHE MANUFACTURER
Do not operate any machine on which the safety orinstruction p lac ards or de ca ls are missing or illeg ible.
Chec k the mac hine for mod ifica tions to orig inal co m-
ponents . Ensure that any mod if ica t ions have bee n
approved by J LG.
Avoid ac cumu lation of de bris on platform floo r. Kee p
mud, oil, grea se, a nd other slippery substanc es from
footwea r and platform dec k.
1.3 OPERATION
General
Do not use the machine for any purpose other than
positioning pe rsonnel, their tools, a nd eq uipment.
Before operation, the user must be familiar with the
machine capabilit ies and operating characteristics of
a ll functions . (Ref. Ta ble 4-1 Mac hine Operation.)
Never operate a ma lfunctioning ma chine. If a ma lfunc-
tions o cc urs, shut down the ma chine. Remove the unit
from service and notify the proper authorities.
Do not remove, m od ify, or disab le the footsw itch or any
other safety devices.
Never slam a control switch or lever through neutral to
an o ppos ite direc tion. Alwa ys return sw itch to neutral
and stop be fore mo ving the switch to the next function.Operate co ntrols with slow a nd e ven pressure.
Hydraulic cylinders should never be left at end of travel
(fully extended or fully retracted) before shutdown or
for long period s of t ime. Alwa ys bump c ontrol in
opposite direction slightly when function reaches end
of tra vel. This applies bo th to ma chines in opera tion o r
in the s towed position.
Do not allow personnel to tamper with or operate the
ma chine from the ground with perso nnel in the plat-
form, except in an em ergenc y.
Do not carry materials directly on platform railing
unless a pproved by J LG.
When two or more persons are in the platform, the
operator shall be responsible for all machine opera-
tions.
Always ensure that power tools are properly stowed
a nd ne ver left hang ing by their cord from the platform
work area.
When driving, always position boom over rear axle in
line w ith the direction of travel. Reme mb er, if boo m is
over the front axle, the direction of steer and drive will
be oppo site from normal operation.
Do not assist a stuck or disabled machine by pushing,
pulling, or by us ing b oo m functions. Ass ist only by
pulling at the cha ssis tie-do wn lugs .
Do no t plac e bo om o r platform ag ainst any s tructure to
steady the platform or to support the structure.
Stow boom and shut off all power before leaving
machine.

Keep the chassis of the machine a minimum distance
of 2 ft. (0.6m) from holes, bumps, drop-offs, obstruc-
t ions , d ebr is , co ncea led holes , and o ther potentia l
haza rds at the ground level.
Never push or pull the machine or other objects by
telesc oping or retrac ting the boo m.
Never attempt to use the machine as a crane. Do not
tie-off ma chine to a ny ad ja ce nt structure. Never a ttach
wire, cable, or any similar items to platform.
Do not operate the machine when wind conditions
exc ee d 30 mp h (12.5 m/s).
Do no t cover the platform sides or ca rry large surfac e-
area items in the platform when operating outdoors.
The a dd ition o f such items increas es the expose d w ind
area of the ma chine.
Do not increase the platform size with unauthorized
deck extensions or attachments.
If boom assembly or platform is caught so that one or
more wheels are off the ground, all persons must be
removed before attempting to free the mac hine. Use
crane s, forklift trucks, or other a ppropria te eq uipme nt
to stabilize ma chine and remove personnel.
Crushing and Collision Hazards
Approved head gear must be worn by all operating
and ground personnel.
Keep ha nds a nd limbs a way from bo om a ssembly dur-
ing operation.
Watch for obstructions around ma chine and overhead
when driving. Check clearance s ab ove, on sides , andbo ttom of platform whe n lifting or lowe ring platform.
During operation, keep all body parts inside platform
railing.
Use the bo om functions , not the d rive function, to po si-
tion the platform close to obs tacles.
Always post a lookout when driving in areas where
vision is obstructed.
Keep non-operating personnel at least 6 ft. (1.8m)
aw ay from ma chine during all driving operations.
Under all travel conditions, the operator must limi
travel spee d a cc ording to c ondit ions of ground sur
face, congestion, visibility, slope, location of personnel
and other fac tors ca using ha za rds o f collision or injury
to personne l.

1.5 MAINTENANCE
General

A maintenance prog ram must be esta blished by a qua li-
f ied person and mus t be fo l lowed to ensure tha t the
machine is safe.
Maintenance Hazards
Shut off power to a ll controls a nd e nsure that a ll oper-
at ing systems are secured from inadvertent motion
prior to performing any adjustments or repairs.
Never wo rk unde r an elevate d platform until it ha s be en
fully lowered to the full down position, if possible, or
otherwise supported and restra ined from movement
with a ppropriate sa fety props , blocking , or overhead
supports.
Alway s relieve hyd raulic press ure from all hydra ulic cir-
cuits be fore loos ening o r removing hydraulic c ompo-
nents.
Always disconnect batteries when servicing electrical

machine.
Shut down the engine (if equipped) while fuel tanks arebe ing filled .
Ensure replace ment parts or compo nents are identica l
or eq uivalent to orig inal pa rts or co mpone nts.
Never attempt to move hea vy pa rts w ithout the a id of a
mecha nica l device. Do not allow heavy objects to rest
in an unstable position. Ensure ade q uate support is
provide d whe n raising c ompo nents of the ma chine.
Remove a ll rings , wa tches, a nd jewelry whe n perform-
ing a ny maintenanc e. Do not wea r loo se fitting cloth-
in g o r lo n g h a i r u n res t r a in ed w h ic h ma y b ec o me
caught or entangled in equipment.
Use only clean approved non-flammable cleaning sol-
vents.
Never alter, remove, or substitute any items such as
counterweights , t ires , bat teries , pla t forms or other
items that may reduce or affect the overall weight or
sta bility of the mac hine. Reference the Se rvice a nd
Maintenance Manual for the weights of critical stability
items.
MODIFICATION OR ALTERATION OF AN AERIAL WORK PLAT-
FORMSHALL BE MADE ONLY WITH PRIOR WRITTEN PERMIS-SION FROMTHE MANUFACTURER

SECTION 2. PREPARATION AND INSPECTION
2.1 GENERAL.
This sec tion provide s the nec ess ary information need ed
by those personnel tha t a re respons ib le to p lace the
machine in operation readiness, and lists checks that are
performed prior to use of the machine. It is important that
the informat ion contained in this sect ion be read and
understood before any a t tempt is made to operate the
mac hine. Ensure that all the neces sa ry inspections have
been completed successfully before placing the machine
into s ervice. Thes e proced ures w ill aid in ob taining ma xi-
mum se rvice life and sa fe operation.
SINCE THE MACHINE MANUFACTURER HAS NO DIRECT CON-TROL OVER THE FIELD INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE,
SAFETY IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER/OPERATOR.
2.2 PREPARATION FOR USE.
Before a new ma chine is put into o perat ion it must be
carefully inspected for any evidence of damage resulting
from s hipment a nd inspec ted pe riod ica lly therea fter, a s
outlined in Delivery and Freq uent Inspe ction (see s ec tion
2-3). (During initial start-up and run,) the unit should be
thoroughly chec ked for hydraulic lea ks . A chec k of a ll
co mponents s hould be ma de to a ss ure their sec urity.
All preparation necessary to place the machine in opera-
tion readiness status is the responsibility of management
personnel. P repara t ion requires go od common sense ,
(i.e. lift works smoothly and brakes operate properly) cou-
pled with a s eries of visua l inspe ctions. The ma nda tory
requirements are g iven in the Da ily Walk Around Inspe c-
tion (see se ction 2-4).
It should be a ssured that the items a ppea ring in the Deliv-
ery and Freq uent Inspec t ion a nd Funct iona l Check a re
co mplied with prior to putting the ma chine into se rvice .
2.3 DELIVERY AND FREQUENTINSPECTION.
NOTE: This machine requires periodic safety and mainte-
nance inspections by an authorized JLG Dealer. A
decal located on the frame provides a place to
record (stamp) inspection dates. Check decal and
notify dealer if inspection is overdue.
NOTE: ANSI/SIA 92.5-1992 also requires an annual inspec
tion to be performed. See annual machine inspection
report CGF330.
The follow ing che cklist provide s a sy stem a tic inspe ction
to as sist in detec ting d efective, da mag ed , or improperly
insta lled pa rts . The c hec klis t de notes the i tems to be
inspe cted a nd co nditions to exam ine.
Freq uent inspe ction s hall be performed e very 3 months o
150 hours whichever com e f ir s t , or more o f ten whe n
required by environment , sever i t y , and f requency o
usage.
This insp ec tion ch ec klist is also a pplica ble a nd mus t be
followed for all machines that have been in storage or fo
all mac hines that have bee n exposed to harsh or cha ng
ing clima tes.
These chec ks are also to be performed a fter maintenanc e
has been performed on the ma chine.
Chassis.
1. Check front tires a nd wheel as semblies for loose o
worn spindles, c omponents a nd ha rdwa re for secu
rity, tires for wear, damage and proper inflation.
2. Check front axle for loose , missing, and worn parts
pivot pin for security.
3. Check steering as sembly for loose or bent steer cylinder rods, steer cylinder and hydraulic lines for
lea ks a nd s ecurity, a nd ha rdware for proper installa
tion.
4. Check rear tires a nd wheel assemb lies for security
tires for wea r, da ma ge and proper infla tion.
5. Check drive hubs for dama ge a nd leaks , and motors
and brakes for damag e.
6. Check oil level in drive hubs by removing fill plug
on top and check plug on side. Fill from top with
EPGL SAE90 until oil flows from check plug
Replace both plugs.
7. Check valves a nd hydraulic l ines for dama ge, leak
age and security.
8. Check pump/motor and ac cessories for dama ge
loose or missing parts, leakage and security. Check
electrical connections for corrosion and tightness
and wiring for insulation damage. Check hydraulic
filter for condition of element. Replace as required.
9. Check hydraulic reservoir and hydraulic lines fo
da mag e, lea kag e a nd sec urity.

clean distilled water to battery after it has been
charged.

and security. Check lift cylinders and hydraulic lines
for damage, leakage and security. Check swing
drive motor for damage, loose or missing parts,
hydraulic lines and component housings for evi-
dence of leakage; worm gear for proper mesh with
swing gear.
12. Check swing bea ring for da mag e, wear, lubrica tion
and loose or missing bearing bolts.
13. Check valves a nd hydraulic lines for da mag e, leak-
ag e, s ecurity and electrica l connections for tightnes sand evidenc e of corrosion.
14. Check ground controls for dama ge, loose or miss-
ing parts, security, electrical connections for tight-
ness and evidence of corrosion and wiring for
insulation da ma ge . Ass ure that all switches function
properly.
NOTE: JLG recommends replacing the hydraulic filter ele-
ment after the first 50 hours of operation and then
every 300 hours thereafter, unless operating condi-
tions require earlier replacement.

2.4 DAILY WALK-AROUND INSPECTION
It is the ope rators respo nsibility to inspec t the ma chine
before the start of ea ch w orkda y. It is recomme nded that
ea ch o perator inspec t the ma chine before operation, even
if the ma chine has a lrea dy b een p ut into service under
a no ther op era tor. This Da ily Wa lk-Around Inspe ction is the
preferred method of inspection.
These chec ks are also to be performed a fter maintena nce
has been performed on the ma chine.
In a dd ition to the Da ily Wa lk-Around Inspec tion, be sure to
include the following as part of the daily inspection:
1. Overall cleanliness .
Chec k all stand ing surfac es for oil, fuel and hydrau-
lic oil spillage and foreign objects. Ensure overall
cleanliness.
2. P la ca rd s.
Keep all information and operating placards cleanand unobstructed. Cover when spray painting or
sho t blas ting to protec t leg ibility.
3. Ope ra to rs a nd S afety Manual.
Ensure a copy of this manual and the ANSI A92.5-
1992 Responsibilities, are enclosed in the manual
storag e box.
4. Ma c hin e Lo g .
Ensure a machine operating record or log is kept,
check to see that it is current and that no entries
have been left uncleared, leaving machine in an
unsa fe co ndition for operation.
5. Start eac h day with a full fuel tank.
TO AVOID INJURY, DO NOT OPERATE A MACHINE UNTIL ALLMALFUNCTIONS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED. USE OF A MALFUNC-TIONING MACHINE IS A SAFETY VIOLATION.
TO AVOID POSSIBLE INJURY, BE SURE MACHINE POWER IS"OFF" DURING WALK-AROUND INSPECTION.
NOTE: Check boom limit switches on upright for proper
operation and security, both visually and manually.
The lower switch cuts out drive speed when the
lower boom is above horizontal. The upper switchcuts out drive speed when the upper boom is above
horizontal. Only creep drive speed will continue to
function.
6. Check platform footswitch for proper operation.
Switch must be released to start engine and
depressed to operate machine.
7. Check that drive brakes hold when machine is
driven up a grade not greater than specified on the
serial number placard and stopped.
NOTE: On new machines, those recently overhauled, or
after changing hydraulic oil, operate all systems a
minimum of two complete cycles and recheck oillevel in reservoir.
8. Assure that all items requiring lubrica tion are se r-
vice d. Refer to Lubrica tion Cha rt, Fig ure 2-3, for spe-
cific requirements.

2.5 DAILY FUNCTIONAL CHECK.
A functiona l check of all systems sho uld b e pe rformed ,
once the wa lk-around inspec tion is c omplete, in a n a rea
free of overhead and ground level obstruct ions . Firs t ,
using the ground controls, check all functions controlledby the g round c ontrols. Next, using the platform co ntrols,
check all functions controlled by the platform controls.
TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY, DO NOT OPERATE MACHINE IF ANYCONTROL LEVERS OR TOGGLE SWITCHES CONTROLLINGPLATFORM MOVEMENTS DO NOT RETURN TO THE OFF POSI-TION WHEN RELEASED.
TO AVOID A COLLISION AND INJURY IF PLATFORMDOES NOT
STOP WHEN A CONTROL SWITCH OR LEVER IS RELEASED,REMOVE FOOT FROMFOOTSWITCH OR USE EMERGENCY STOPTO STOP MACHINE.
1. Check boom limit switches. Raise and lower the
Lower Boom. Check for smooth operation. Check
Boom Upright tilting. (See Figure 4-2. Upright posi-
tioning Models 40e and 45e).
NOTE: Perform checks from ground controls first, then from
platform controls.
2. Raise, extend, retrac t, and lower the Upper Boom.
Chec k for smo oth operation.
3. On mod els (40/n40/45 electric), if towe r boom do es
not rest on stop with ma chine in the stow ed pos ition,
this indicates upright is out of plumb.(Ref. 2-20 of
service manual 3120743, for Boom Synchronizing
procedure)
4. On m od els (35/n35/40/n40/45 electric), teles co pe
boom IN and OUTseveral cycles at various degrees
of elevation lengths. Check for smooth telescope
operation.
5. Swing turntable to LEFT and RIGHT a minimum of
45 deg rees . Chec k for smo oth motion.
6. With the aid of an a ssistant to monitor the CHAS SISOUT OF LEVEL indica tor lig ht on the platform con-
sole, manually activate the indicator light by com-
pressing one of the three tilt indicator mounting
springs. If the light does not illuminate, shut down
machine and contact a qualified service technician
before continuing operation.
7. Chec k that platform self-leveling sys tem functions
properly d uring raising a nd lowe ring of boo m.
8. On m od els (35/n35/40/n40/45 electric), c hec k rota
tor for smooth operation and assure platform wil
rotate 75 degrees in both directions from centerline
of boom.
9. Drive forward and reverse; check for proper opera
tion.
10. Steer left and right; check for proper operation.
11. Fo o ts w itc h.
FOOTSWITCH MUST BE ADJUSTED SO THAT FUNCTIONS WILLOPERATE WHEN PEDAL IS APPROXIMATELY AT ITS CENTER OF
TRAVEL. IF SWITCH OPERATES WITHIN LAST 1/4" (6 MM) OFTRAVEL, TOP OR BOTTOM, IT SHOULD BE ADJUSTED.
FOOTSWITCH MUST BE DEPRESSED PRIOR TO ACTIVATING ANYFUNCTION CONTROL, OTHERWISE THE FUNCTION WILL NOTWORK.
With footsw itch de pressed , ope ra te LIFT a nd ho ld
control. Remove foot from footswitch, motion should
stop. If it does not, shut down machine and contac
a q ualified service technician.
12. Holding the GROUND/P LATFORM S ELECT switch
to G ROUND. Platform c ontrols s hould not op erate.
13. Plac e G ROUND/PLATFORM SELECT switch to OFF
P latform/G round co ntrols sho uld not ope rate.
2.6 TORQUE REQUIREMENTS.
The Torq ue C ha rt (Fig ure 2-5) cons ists o f stand a rd torq ue
values ba sed on bo lt diameter and grade , also s pecifying
dry, wet and loctite torque values in accordance with rec
omme nded sho p practices . This c hart is provided as an
aid to the ope rator in the e vent he/she notices a cond ition
that req uires p rompt a t tention during the w a lk-around
inspe ction or d uring ope ration, until the proper s ervice
person nel can b e notified . The S ervice a nd Maintena nce
sec tion provide s s pec ific torq ue values a nd pe riod ic ma in
tenance proced ures with a lis t ing of individua l compo
nents . U t il iz ing th is torque cha r t in c onjunct ion wi th
preventive maintenance section will enhance safety, reli
ab ility, a nd performanc e of the ma chine.

2.7 BATTERY MAINTENANCE ANDCHARGING.
TO AVOID INJURY FROM AN EXPLOSION, DO NOT SMOKE ORALLOWSPARKS OR A FLAME NEAR BATTERY DURING SERVIC-
ING. ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND HAND PROTECTION WHEN SER-VICING BATTERIES.
Battery Maintenance, Quarterly.
1. Open battery compartment cover to a llow ac cess to
ba ttery terminals a nd vent ca ps.
CAUTION
WHEN ADDING WATER TO BATTERIES, ADD
WATER UNTIL ELECTROLYTE COVERS PLATES.
DO NOT CHARGE BATTERIES UNLESS ELEC-TROLYTE COVERS THE PLATES.
NOTE: When adding distilled water to batteries, non-metallic
containers and/or funnels must be used.
To avoid electrolyte overflow, add distilled water to
batteries after charging.
When adding water to the battery, fill only to level
indicated or 3/8" above separators.
2. Remove all vent ca ps and inspect electrolyte level of
each cell. Electrolyte level should be to the ring
approximately one inch from top of battery. Fill bat-
teries with distilled water only. Replace and secure
all vent caps .
3. Remove bat tery cables from each ba t tery post one
at a time, ne ga tive first. Clea n ca bles with acid neu-
tralizing solution (e.g. baking soda and water or
am monia) and wire brush. Replac e ca bles a nd/or
cable clamp bolts as required.
4. Clean battery post with wire brush then re-connect
cable to post. Coat non-contact surfaces with min-
eral g reas e o r petroleum jelly.
5. When all cables and terminal posts have been
cleaned, ensure all cables are properly positioned
and do not get pinched. Close battery co mpartment
cover.
6. Start hydraulic sys tem and ensure that it functions
properly.
Battery Charging, Daily.
NOTE: To avoid excessive battery charging time, do not
allow batteries to become completely discharged.
To avoid electrolyte overflow, add distilled water to
batteries after charging.
When adding water to the battery, fill only to level
indicated or 3/8" above separators.
1. Charge bat teries a t the end of each work day, or
when machine performance is significantly reduced
due to b atteries beco ming discharged.
2. Charge ba tteries in acco rda nce with the following
procedure:
a . Open bat tery compartment, and bat tery charger
compartment covers.
WHEN BATTERY CHARGER IS TO BE USED, CHARGING HAR-NESS MUST BE PLUGGED INTO A GROUNDED 110 VOLT RECEP-TACLE. IF RECEPTACLE IS NOT GROUNDED AND AMALFUNCTION SHOULD OCCUR, THE MACHINE COULD CAUSESERIOUS ELECTRICAL SHOCK.
b. Remove charging harness cable and connect to
a 110 volt receptacle.
c. Allow ba tteries to charge until ammeter on
cha rger, if equipped, is rea ding z ero (0). Normal
cha rging time is 8-10 hours.
NOTE: When batteries are completely charged, disconnect
charging harness cable from receptacle. Store
charging harness cable.
d. Ensure battery cables are positioned a nd are notp in c h ed . C lo s e a n d s ec u re a ll c o mp a r tmen t
doors.
3. The bat tery packs on each s ide of the frame a re
designed to be easily removed so that a machine
can have two sets of them in order to keep the
machine functioning longer. Disconnect the cable
quick connects, and remove the two clevis pins on
top of the frame. Now, using the forklift pockets
under the packs, have a forklift move them to a
plac e whe re they ca n be recha rged . The new ba ttery
packs can be installed by reversing the above pro-
cedure.
NOTE: Battery packs are interchangeable.

SECTION 3. USER RESPONSIBILITIES AND MACHINE CONTROLS
3.1 GENERAL.
SINCE THE MANUFACTURER HAS NO DIRECT CONTROL OVERMACHINE APPLICATION AND OPERATION, CONFORMANCE WITH
GOOD SAFETY PRACTICES IN THESE AREAS IS THE RESPONSI-BILITY OF THE USER AND HIS/HER OPERATING PERSONNEL.
This sec tion provide s the nec ess ary information need ed
to understand control functions. Included in this section
are the o perating cha racteristics a nd limitations, a nd func-
tions a nd purpose s o f controls a nd indicators. It is impor-
t a n t th a t t h e u s e r re a d a n d u n d e rs t a n d t h e p ro p e r
procedures b efore o perating the ma chine. These proce-
dures will aid in obta ining o ptimum lift service and sa fe
operation.
3.2 PERSONNEL TRAINING.
The a erial platform is a personne l handling de vice; there-
fore, it is e sse ntial that it be o perated and ma intained only
by a uthorized and q ualified pe rsonnel who ha ve demo n-
strated that they unde rstand the proper use a nd ma inte-
nance of the machine. It is important that all personnel
who are assigned to and are responsible for the operation
and m ain tenanc e o f the mac hine undergo a thorough
training program and chec k out period in order to bec ome
familiar w ith the c ha racteris t ics prior to o perat ing the
machine.
In ad dition, personne l operating the mac hine sho uld b e
fam iliar with ANSI sta nd a rd A92.5-1992 Resp on s ibilities
S ec tion. This outlines the resp ons ibilities of the ow ners,
users, operators, lessors and lessees concerning safety,
training, inspection, maintenance, application and opera-
tion.
Persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol or who
are subject to seizures, dizziness or loss of physical con-
trol must not be permitted to ope rate the ma chine.
Operator Training.
Operator training must include instruction in the
following areas:
1. Use a nd limitations of the platform controls, ground
controls, emergency controls and safety systems.
2. Knowledge and understanding of this manual and of
the control markings, instructions and warnings on
the machine itself.
3. Knowledge and understanding of a ll sa fety work
rules of the emp loyer and of Fed eral, S tate and loca
statutes, including training in the recognition andavoidance of potential hazards in the work place
with particular a ttention to the wo rk to be performed .
4. Proper use of all req uired personnel sa fety equip
ment, in particular the we aring of a s afety harness o
other approved fall protection devices with a lanya rd
attached to a designated attach point, on the plat-
form, at a ll times .
5. Sufficient knowledge of the mechanical operation o
the machine to recognize a malfunction or potentia
malfunction.
6. The safest means to operate the machine whereoverhead obstructions, other moving equipment
and obstac les, d epress ions, holes, dropoffs, e tc. on
the supporting surface exist.
7. Means to avoid the haza rds of unprotected electrica
conductors.
8. Any other req uirements of a spec ific job o r machine
application.
Training Supervision.
Training must be do ne und er the supe rvision o f a q ua lified
person in an ope n a rea f ree o f obs t ruct ions unt il thet ra inee has developed the ab i l i t y to s a fe ly cont ro l a
machine in congested work locations.
Operator Responsibility.
The o pera tor must be instructed tha t he/she ha s the
responsibility and authority to shut down the machine in
ca se of a malfunction o r other unsafe co ndition o f eithe
the ma chine or the job site a nd to reques t further informa
tion from his/her s uperviso r or a n a uthorized J LG Distribu
tor before proceed ing.
NOTE: Manufacturer or Distributor will provide qualified per
sons for training assistance with first unit(s) delivered
and thereafter as requested by the user or his/her
personnel.

3.3 OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS ANDLIMITATIONS.
General.
A thorough knowledge of the operating charac-
teristics a nd limitations of the ma chine is a lwa ys
the first req uirement for any user, reg a rdless of
the users experience with similar types of
equipment.
Placards.
Impo rtant po ints to remembe r during opera tion
are provided at the control stations by DAN-
G ER, WARNING , C AUTION, IMPORTANT a nd
INSTRUC TION pla ca rds . This informa tion is
placed at various locations for the express pur-pose of alerting personnel of potential hazards
constituted by the operating characteristics and
load limitations of the machine. See FORE-
WORD for definitions of the a bo ve plac ards .
Capacities.
Raising boom above horizontal with or without
any load in platform, is based on the following
criteria:
1. Machine is positioned on a smooth, firm and levelsurface.
2. Loa d is within manufac turers rated design capa city.
3. All machine s ystems a re functioning properly.
4. Proper t ire pressure.
5. Mac hine is as o riginally equipped from J LG.
Stability.
This ma chine as orig inally ma nufactured by J LG Indus -
tries, Inc. , when operated within its rated capacity on a
smo oth, firm and level supporting surfac e a nd in acc or-dance with the instructions provided on the machine and
in this manual, provides a stable machine for all positions.
Mac hine s tability is b as ed on two (2) cond itions which a re
ca lled FO RWARD s ta bility a nd BACKWARD s ta bility. The
machine s pos ition of lea st FORWARD s tab ility is s how n in
Figure 3-1 and its p os ition o f lea st B AC KWARD sta bility is
sho wn in Figure 3-2.
TO AVOID FORWARD OR BACKWARD UPSET, DO NOT OVER-
LOAD MACHINE, OPERATE ON OUT-OF-LEVEL SURFACE OR
OPERATE WITH THE BOOMUPRIGHT TILTING. (SEE FIGURE 4-2.
UPRIGHT POSITIONING).
3.4 CONTROLS AND INDICATORS.
These mac hines are eq uipped with co ntrol panels that
use symbo ls a nd w ords to indicate co ntrol functions. On
som e ma chines , the cont ro l panels may use s ymbols
only. Refer to Ta ble 3-1 for thes e s ymb ols a nd their corre-
spo nding functions.

PERFORM AS MANY PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECK
AND INSPECTIONS FROM GROUND CONTROLS
AS POSSIBLE.
NOTE: When machine is shut down the Platform/Ground
Select switch and Emergency Stop must be posi-
tioned to OFF.
1. Power/Emergency Stop Switch.
A two-position red mushroom shaped switch furnishes
po we r to P LATFORM/G ROUND S ELECT sw itch w hen
pulled out (on). When pushe d in (off), po we r is shut o ff to
the P LATFORM/G ROUND S ELECT sw itch.
2. Platform/Ground Select Switch.
A three pos ition, key operated switch supplies pow er to
the platform co ntrol con so le whe n po sitione d to P LAT-
FORM. With the sw itch key he ld in the G ROUND pos ition,
powe r is s hut off to platform a nd o nly g round co ntrols a reoperable. When released from GROUND posit ion the
sw itch s pring returns to the (off) pos ition.
NOTE: With PLATFORM/GROUND SELECT switch in the
center position, power is shut off to controls at both
operating stations.

9. Circuit Breakers.(March 1995 to Present)
The c ircuit breakers o pen (pop out) to indica te a sho rt or
overload somew here on the ma chine.
10. Battery Indicator and Hourmeter .
An ho urmeter, installed in the upper po rtion of the G round
Co ntrol Box, registers the a mount of ma chine operating
time. The ho urmeter reg isters up to 9,999.9 hours a nd
ca nnot be reset.

Platform Control Station. (See Figure 3-4)
1. Footswitch.
A sa fety feature, the footswitch must be de pressed
before boom, drive or steer functions will operate.
TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY, DO NOT REMOVE, MODIFY OR DIS-
ABLE THE FOOTSWITCH BY BLOCKING OR ANY OTHER MEANS.
FOOTSWITCH MUST BE DEPRESSED PRIOR TO ACTIVATING ANYFUNCTION CONTROL, OTHERWISE THE FUNCTION WILL NOT
OPERATE.
FOOTSWITCH MUST BE ADJUSTED SO THAT FUNCTIONS WILL
OPERATE WHEN PEDAL IS APPROXIMATELY AT ITS CENTER OFTRAVEL. IF SWITCH OPERATES WITHIN LAST 1/4" OF TRAVEL,TOP OR BOTTOM, IT SHOULD BE ADJUSTED.
2. Power/Emergency Stop.

and retraction of the ma in boo m when pos itioned to
IN or OU T.
6. Swing.
The S WING c ontrol switch provide s 360 de g rees
non-continuous turntab le rotation. To a ctivate
S WING, po sition sw itch to LEFTo r RIGHT.
NOTE: When Lift or Swing is being operated, Drive will nofunction.
7. Drive/Steer.
The DRIVE c on troller pro vides for driving either for-
wa rd or ba ckward when positioned to FORWARD
or REVERS E. The co ntroller is ramped to a llow
infinitely variable drive speed between fast and
slow.
Po sitioning the s teer control thumb opera ted s witch
RIG HTor LEFTena bles steering the ma chine to the
rig ht or left res pe ctively.
NOTE: When lower boom is raised above horizontal, or theupper boom is raised approximately 16 inches
(40.64 cm) above boom rest, the high drive function
will automatically switch to low drive. This also
occurs when Function Speed Control is clicked on
creep.
NOTE: DRIVE control lever is spring-loaded and will auto
matically return to neutral (OFF) position when
released.
NOTE: When Drive is being operated, Lift and Swing will no
function.
NOTE: Lift and Swing will continue to operate when Steer isactivated.
8. Platform Leveling Override.(35/n35/40/n40/45 electric)

9. Platform Rotate.(35/n35/40/n40/45 electric)

10. Function Speed Control.
Adjusts speed of Boom and Swing Functions.
Rotate CC W for slowe r speed and CW for faster
spe ed . Adjust Drive Function to cree p. Rota te
CC W until the Function C ontrol knob clicks.
11. Machine Out Of Level.
This red illuminator indicate s tha t the cha ss is is o n a
slope (over 5 deg rees). If the boo m is ab ove horizon-
tal and the mac hine is on a 5 deg ree slope, an alarm
will sound and CREEP is automa tica lly ac tivated.
12. Horn.
A push -type HORN sw itch s upplies electrica l powe r
to an audible w arning d evice when pressed .
13. Circuit Breakers.
The c ircuit brea kers ope n (pop out) to indica te ashort or overloa d so mew here on the mac hine.
14. 110 Volt AC Outlet.
This feature a llow s e lectrica l pow er to be s upplied
to the platform. Plug a n extension cord into a
g rounde d 110 VAC outlet a nd then into the plug on
the rig ht side of the hood . Pow er will now be sup-
plied to the outlet in the ba sket to run portab le elec-
tric tools, lig hts, etc.

SECTION 4. MACHINE OPERATION
4.1 DESCRIPTION.
This J LG Lift is EE Ra ted a nd C ertified By Und erwriters
Laboratories.
This ma ch ine is a se lf-prope lled hyd raulic lift eq uipped
with a wo rk platform on the end of an elevating , a rticulat-
ing a nd rota ting bo om . The J LG Lifts intende d purpose is
to position personnel with their tools and supplies at posi-
tions a bove g round level, and ca n be use d to reach wo rk
areas loca ted a bove ma chinery o r equipment.
The J LG Lift ha s a prima ry opera tor Control Sta tion in the
platform. From this control station, the operator can drive
and steer the machine in both forward and reverse direc-
tions . The o perator ca n raise or lower the upper or low erboom or swing the boom to the lef t or r ight . Standard
boo m sw ing is 360 deg ree non-continuous left and right o f
the stowed position. The ma chine has a G round C ontrol
Station which will override the Platform Control Station.
