Indian Open Access Publishing Channels
• http://MedIND.nic.in • Produced under ICMR funded project - "National Databases of Indian Medical
Journals".• Purpose is to provide free access to full text of articles published in select Indian
biomedical journals indexed in IndMED or PubMed databases. • Presently covers 86 medical journals, published by learned societies and
medical research centres. • Collaboration between National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Indian Council of
Medical Research (ICMR)
• http://IndMED.nic.in• Produced under ICMR funded project - "National Databases of Indian Medical
Journals".• Purpose is to index selected peer reviewed medical journals published from
India.• Integrated to PubMed MEDLARS database. • Presently covers about 100 medical journals, published by learned societies and
medical research centres. • Collaboration between NIC and ICMR for the Indian Medlars Centre.
• http://OpenMED.nic.in • A Green OA Channel and Disciplinary Repository, maintained by the NIC. • A Self-Archiving facility to biomedical researchers and practitioners in India • Purpose is to global dissemination of peer reviewed medical literature
published from India and South Asia.
Medknow Publications
• Medknow Publications [Medknow.com], launched in 1999 in India, is an open access publisher, now publishing about 328 STM journals, in collaboration with about 293 learned societies/ associations.
• Majority of journals belong to biomedical subject areas.• Majority of journals belong to Indian societies/ associations, including
journals of ICMR, . • They also provide Gold OA publishing solutions to societies in Asian
and African countries, mostly from the developing nations. • Only few journals receive Article Processing Charges (APC) to get
published after usual peer-reviewing and acceptance, other journals receive no APC.
• Some journals are indexed in Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science. • Wolters Kluwer Health has acquired MedKnow in 2011.
Indian Green Open Access ChannelsSource: Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) – 8 out of 69, covering Health and Medicine subject areas. • OpenMED@NIC by Bibliographic Informatics Division, National
Informatics Centre (NIC), India• Digital Knowledge Repository of Central Drug Research Institute
(DKR@CDRI) • Eprints @MDRF by Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, India• EPrints@NIRT by National Institute for Tuberculosis Research, India• Eprints@CMFRI (CMFRI Digital Repository) by Central Marine Fisheries
Research Institute (CMFRI), ICAR, India• Indian Academy of Sciences: Publications of Fellows by Indian Academy
of Sciences, India• IR@NPL by CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, India• Knowledge Repository Open Network (KNoor) by Department of Library
& Information Science, University of Kashmir, India
Indian Open Data RepositoriesSource: DATABIB (A searchable directory of research data repositories) – 8 out of 25, covering Health and Medical Sciences subject areas. • Indian Genetic Disease Database @ Indian Institute of Chemical Biology• Oral Cancer Gene Database @ Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research
and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre• ACEpepDB: Peptide Database @ Central Food Technological Research
Institute, India• HIstome: The Histone Infobase @ Advanced Centre for Treatment,
Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre• Human Proteinpedia @ Institute of Bioinformatics, Bangalore• Clinical Trials Registry - India (CTRI) @ ICMR National Institute of Medical
Statistics (NIMS)• TBNet India: A National Portal for Tuberculosis Initiative @ Institute of
Bioinformatics, Bangalore• India Sanitation Portal @ The Arghyam Foundation
Some Observations• Amount of peer-reviewed open access literature produced from
India is significant. • Global accessibility, visibility and collaborative research will be
increased if Indian biomedical research institutions – Establish OA Institutional Repositories,– Establish Open Data Repositories,– Contents Produced with Creative Common (CC) Licenses
• Needs to strengthen – Linkages amongst Open Innovation, Open Access and Open
Science Data – Knowledge Mapping of Collaborative Biomedical Research in India– Knowledge Networking amongst Biomedical Research Institutions – Open Access Advocacy, Capacity Building and Awareness Raising.
Thank you for your attention.
