OCC Athletic Program Ranked #9 Nationally
Ocean County College finished ninth in the country as an athletic program for success in championship competition by the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA).
Points are determined on where teams finish at the NJCAA National Championships. With the conclusion of all national competition and tourna-ments for the 2013-2014 year, OCC has been ranked as one of the top programs in the country.
NATYCAA is the professional organiz-ation of two year college athletic admin-istrators, and membership is open to all two year institutions from through-out the country (www.natycaa.com).
The NATYCAA Cup program began in 2004 and recognizes excellence in two-year college athletics based on success in championship competition. Standings for the Scholarship and Non – Scholarship Divisions are ranked twice a school year. (Mid Year rankings in January and Final Standings are in June.)

Cross Country Team Honored at National Championship Ring Ceremony
The Viking Women’s Cross Country Team, winners of
this past fall’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III National Championship, was honored this spring 2014 in a Ring Ceremony to recognize this remarkable accomplishment.
The Ring Ceremony capped off a continuous celebration of the Women’s Cross Country Team’s outstanding achievements. OCC clearly made the right decision in reinstating the Cross Country Team in 2009, after 13 years without a program. Since then, the women have repeatedly been on top of the Garden State Athletic Conference, Region XIX, and the NJCAA National Championship, in addition to being recognized by the New Jersey General Assembly and the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
In early November 2013, OCC’s run-ners traveled to Holyoke, Massachusetts, to compete for the NJCAA National Championship. Under the guidance of Coach Ed Baynes, the women cruised
to 1st Place. Standout Liz Kowalski won the women’s race and was named an indi-vidual National Champion and an NJCAA First Team All-American. In addi-tion, Meghie Weinberger finished 11th and earned an NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention.
Coach Baynes joined the program in 2009, and has been building a lasting tradition of excellence. He was recognized as National Coach of the Year in 2009, 2012, and 2013, and was a key reason OCC was awarded the Gary Moore Best Overall Program Award last season.
In addition to the success of the women runners, Baynes has recently coached the 2013 Vikings Men’s Cross Country Team to the Region XIX Championship and sec-ond place in the Nationals.
“Great job and congratulations to Ed and the Viking Cross Country Team!” A.J. Trump, OCC Athletic Director, remarked. “Everyone at OCC is extremely proud of their hard work and outstanding accomplishments.”

Men’s & Women’s Swim Finish 2nd in Non Scholarship
Division at Nationals
The Vikings Men’s and Women’s Swim
Team competed against many two and four year colleges this past winter, with Head Coach Steve Stout and Assistant Coach Lauren Stoltzfus a steady pool-side presence. The team qualified 19 swimmers in three or more events to participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships at Indian River State College in Florida, where the women and men both finished second in the non-scholarship division and sixth over-all. Swimmers Randall Trasky and Breda Jones both qualified for an “A” final – in the 100-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke, respectively – and they each finished eighth in the country.
Men’s Basketball Picks up Steam in
Season’s Second Half
The Vikings Basketball Team, under the guidance of Head Coach Andy Smith and Asst. Coach James Stockton, had a slow start to the season, notching just a couple wins in its first 11 games. However, the squad soon caught fire and went on to nab the victory in nine of its next 15 games, finishing with an 11-15 overall record and seventh place in the Garden State Athletic Conference.
Freshman guard Anthony Walker led the Vikings in scoring this season, record-ing 426 points in just 17 games. For his efforts, he earned GSAC Player of the Week and First Team All-GSAC honors, and was the number seven ranked player in the nation in points per game.
Golf Qualifies for Tournament
OCC Golf qualified for and competed at the Regional Tournament at Crystal Springs. Unfortunately the team was unable to qualify for NJCAA Nationals but still had an excellent season and we are extremely proud of their accomplish-ments. Great job to the team members and Coach Beirne!
Women’s Basketball Finishes Strong;
Morgan Leads Team
With Head Coach Dana Kovich and Assistant Coach Nicole Ciocher ably directing from the sidelines, the Vikings Women’s Basketball Team finished the 2013-2014 winter with an 11-14 regular season record and ended up seventh in the Garden State Athletic Conference.
Sophomore forward Corinne Morgan was named GSAC Player of the Week in early January. Morgan led the Vikings in both scoring and rebounding this past season, averaging nearly 17 points and rebounds per game.
She was named to the First Team All-GSAC for her excellent play.
Softball has Excellent Season
Softball finished the season as the 4th place team in Region XIX with a 14-7 reg-ular season record. After qualifying for the final four by winning a best of three series over Bergen, the team lost 4-1 to the #1 team in the nation, Brookdale, then fell 1-0 to Northampton to end their playoff run. Great job to the Vikings and Coaches Mazanec and Weinberger for an excellent season.

Baseball Has a Memorable Season
and Tournament
OCC Baseball finished the season as the #3 team in Region XIX. The team advanced to the Region XIX Final Four and defeated the defending National Champions Gloucester 4-2 in the first game. The Vikings then fell 6-2 to Cumberland in game two forcing an elimination game between Ocean and Gloucester the following day. The Vikings lost a heart breaker in the bottom of the 9th, 6-5 on a walk-off hit.
The team should be proud as they defeated every team in the Region this season including six nationally ranked teams. Congratulations to the players and Coach McRae, Browne, Marchie, and Dolan for their exceptional job this season.
Strong Season for Men’s Tennis;
Team Participates in Regional Tournament
Men’s Tennis finished with an 11-3 overall regular season record earning them a 2nd finish in the Garden State Athletic Conference. They competed in the NJCAA Region XIX Tennis Tournament and finished 5th. Great job to Coach Stan Friedman and the Viking Tennis Team on an excellent season.
Men’s Swimming: NJCAA Academic Team of the YearThe OCC Men’s Swim Team was named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for having the highest team GPA in the nation of all NJCAA Men’s Swim Programs.
