SHAME ON THE STATE-

Of Kentucky if She Allows Such

Crimes as This to Go

Hickman Ky Oct 14 Dave Walk-er

¬

and family negroes smoked out ofand family the negroes smoked out oftheir home at midnight Saturday andkilled by night riders lay all the nextday Sunday on the spot where theywere shot until about sundown whitepeople sent out coffins and looked aftertheir burial

There were eight in the family threebeing killed outright four woundedwho will die and one missing who issupposed to be dead-

A negro doctor went out to see theinjured but for fear of the night ridersrefused to go back again Other ne ¬

groes too were afraid to go near thescene of the tragedy

The horror of this massacre seems tohave had a stupefying effect on theauthorities as no arrests have beenmade They sad they are doing noth ¬

ing because they do not know where tobegin

Walker is said to have had the repu ¬

tation of being a surly negro It wascharged that he had cursed a whitewoman and threatened to shoot thewhite man who went to her defense

The night riders numbering about50 surrounded the home of Walkershortly before midnight and command-ed

¬

him to come out and take a whip ¬

ping Walker declined and fired uponthe night riders whereupon they satu ¬

rated timbers of the house with coaloil and set fire to them In a few mo ¬

ments the house was a mass of flamesWalker pleading for mercy threw

open the door of his cabin and ran outinto the open He was riddled withbullets and fell screaming to theground

Following her husband Walkers wifeappeared in the doorway She held inher arms their infant child and begged-the Night Riders for mercy Disre ¬

garding her pleadings the infuriated-mob opened fire and a bullet pierced-the body of the infant in its mothersarms A second shot struck the moth-er

¬

in the abdomen and she fell stillholding the dead body of her child

Terrorstricken by the flames whichwere licking all sides of the cabin yetfearing to venture into the open theremaining children of Walker shriekedabove the noise of the crackling woodThen the 5yearold girl came out fol ¬

lowed by three other childrenBoy Probably Burned

The girl was killed outright and theother children received wounds whichit is believed will prove fatal There ishardly a doubt but that the oldest sonof Walker preferred death by burningrather than to place himself at themercy of the mob
