OFFICER REPORTS President’s Message: Peter Tapia; Well this is the last report as your president; it’s been an eye opening experience and a learning
experience as well. It’s a privilege to be nominated and to serve in any position and I took pride in doing
this job. There are lots of great people in our breed and club who are willing to help and that’s what
makes this club the best one in the country.
By this time most of our shows will be winding down and we will only have the National left, I hope
everyone had a successful show year and are getting ready for the next breeding season.
I want to wish our new officers good luck and from what I saw of the election we are in great hands for
the next two years Peter
Eastern V.P. Report: Jay Turner Well this message marks my last as your Eastern Vice President. I just wanted to take a few minutes to
thank everyone who supported me the last four years. We have a great group in the eastern half of the
country along with a great group in the west. It has been an honor and a pleasure serving the club and
something I have really enjoyed. This job has been super easy while working with good people, the
directors such as Terry Brechbill, Sand Oelschlegel, Dustin Page, John Suker and Joe Cussick. I cannot
thank these people enough.
We have seen some great shows this year with the NYBS in Louisville, District 3 in Alabama, District 1 in
New York at the Big Apple Classic and the Eastern Regional in Watertown, Wis., as I write District 2 is
getting ready to start in Des Moines, IA. Congrats to all of our winners across the east and thanks to
everyone who support these shows, without that support we would have a hard time making it.
As for the next two years, well first off I want to thank everyone who voted for me and showed your
support while I ran for President. This was not an office that I sought out but several felt it was needed
for me to run for office. I just hope I do not let them all down. We have several big plans coming in 2018
for the better of the club and I will begin announcing them after the National Show in Amarillo, until
then I will be getting my birds ready for a big show at the National and I hope to see each and every one
of you there. Jay

Show season is in full swing and I see the pictures hitting the SpokT website every weekend (if you
don’t know what that is-you are missing out on a lot- contact me and I will get you connected to the right
person to get a log-on). I love seeing all the winning birds and pictures of the people. In fact, let me
encourage everyone to take pictures of the people as well as the birds at shows and post them. Newer
people like me do not know all the breeders, so it would help to put a name with a face.
The Alabama Pigeon Club Young Bird Show was held in-conjunction with the Heart of Dixie
Poultry Club Meet on Saturday, October 14th in Anniston Alabama. It was held in the beautiful new
building at the Calhoun County Agriculture Center. The building was built two years ago for the purpose
of livestock shows, a real commitment from the county. I love showing there because the poultry club sets
up all the show cages and breaks the down, in addition each show starts out with the pledge of allegiance.
On the opening year there was a young girl who sang the Star Spangled Banner beautifully and that was
pretty special.
Bill Henderson was the judge and he did a great job of explaining his placing. Best West was a
beautiful Red Self owned by Jay Turner and Reserve was another Jay Turner beauty- an Andalusion. In
addition, the Junior Champion was Jay’s grandson Daelyn Jackson showing a striking Homozygous
Andalusion and Junior Reserve Champion was a Lucerne shown by Jay’s granddaughter Chelsea
Crumpton. Sort of a clean sweep for the family!
I had a great time at the National Young Bird Show. This year Dustin Page and I were listed as
“members in charge” - I think we can blame Jay for that! For one thing it meant that I had the
opportunity to compare the show book to the birds entered to be sure the classes were correct so the
show would run smoothly. Thank goodness for Peter Tapia who did that with me since I really do not
know all the colors.
Peter did fantastic at the show and said the 1300 miles he drove from New Mexico, was worth the
trip since he had four birds up on bench while the judge picked the final winners and Peter was
Champion of show with a nice short little black mottle. I was incredibly proud to have my white cock
chosen Reserve! William Baldwin is a junior that has been at the last four Louisville shows and every
year he bring a nice show team. He had some beautiful birds there this year and had them in great
condition. His Black Splash Mottle was Reserve Mottle behind the bird that was Champion! William
took home the Best Junior award.
That’s all for now. I have two shows left to go to and will report more in the next bulletin. Sandy
District 4: David Garcia: No report
District 5: Larry Eastman We had our district meet in Puyallup Washington this year with a nice amount of entries. Attending were
John Kieft, Jim & Cynthia Cooper, Marv Fortune, and Kevin Roach, John Mcgonigal and myself. We
only have a few members here in the Northwest but everyone is very active when it comes to local shows.
Since it is hard to get a judge up here we decided to panel judge this year with everyone judging. Jim
cooper judged the Baldheads, Larry Eastman judged the Patterns, John Kieft judged the Mottles and
Marv Fortune judged the Selfs. Champion a nice Red Mottle OH of Jim Cooper’s, Res Champion was a
Andaluion YC and best young John also had the best baldhead a nice black YH. The best self belong to
Kevin Roach a nice black OC, this was Kevin’s first win in the National West Club and only his second
showing as a member of the club. Again a thanks to all seven members of our local club. Great show.
I was lucky enough to attend three great shows this year. The first was in Watsonville California a great
show I get to see old friends plus some very nice birds. Matt Mutuska won champion with a very nice
black splash, John Kieft sent a team to the show with some very nice black and red baldheads, plus two
outstanding black delf and andalusian pattern. This is always a nice show to start the season off but it is
hard on the birds being so early in the year. Others attending Javier Gomez, Tony Cardoza, John
Cardenas, Lennie Mefferd, Peter Tapia, Terry Bishop, and John Mumma (Peter and his brother Paul
attend every year a long 13 hour drive) Sorry if I forgot someone
My second show was the Western Young bird show in So. Jordon, Utah another great show. I had the
honor of judging this show plus get to see a few friends. The date had to be changed from the normal
dates so the entry was down form the norm but a very nice entry. It was good to see Hunter Siggard, and
Josh Zilles these two are great supporters of our breed here in Utah. Matt Matuska and Keith Marnay
had a nice entry at this show again Matt winning with a nice andalusion pattern. Matt signed a few new
members at this show and as always gave away a couple nice birds to help new members. I would like to
thank Josh Zilles for being a great host at this show.
The third show was the Pageant of Pigeons in Ontario, California, this is always the best West show in
the country. Judging honors this year was Jay Turner doing a very fine job with so many very nice birds.
The Southern California West of England Tumbler club always puts on a good display with their judging
area so it makes it easy to see and watch the judging. Entries were down but the quality was very high as
always. It was good to see Terry Brechbill at the show even if he had no birds there. A special thanks
should go to Bob Christman, Javier Gomez, John Cardenas and Allen Fiandaca for setting up this show
the Southern Cal club does a super job year after year.
Until next years shows 82 hours of drive time to many miles to count (4000+ miles) it was fun and always
will be. I am honored to be in the pigeon hobby and have so many friends.
District 6 Report: Bob Christman
Sixth District show was held again in conjunction with the Pageant of Pigeons. Another successful show.
Congratulations to Javier Gomez for Champion and John Cardenas for Reserve Champion. Javier made
some Pageant history being the first person to ever win the Pageant back to back. It was a very small
Pageant this year with all entries down including the Wests with 166 birds shown. You would have to go
back all the way to the early 1990’s to find a smaller Pageant West showing and all the way back to the
1970’s to find another smaller one. I do expect the West entry to be much larger next year. The quality,
however, was very deep in all of the classes. A big thanks goes to Jay Turner for coming all the way
from Alabama to judge the show. He did an excellent job and picked an outstanding group of birds for
the finals and a very deserving bird for champion.

Hi everyone I would like to introduce my self to the ones that haven't had the chance
to meet me. I have been with the West club since 1975.
I would like to give my deepest appreciation for voting for me as your new 2018-19
Western Vice President. I also would like to thank all the pass officers for there
continued success and taking on another term again.
As we are moving along we have had two gentlemen that gave there best to run our
club for 2016-17 two great guys Peter Tapia Press.and Javier Gomez Vice Press.
Thanks from all of us.
As we are now coming into our new term for this year I have full confidence that Jay
Turner will lead our club into the future of our NWOETC.
I'm so honored at this time to be able to work with a great group of officers. And for
the most part are all the members we can't do this with out all of You! As we said in
the old days "Peace.
Tony Cardoza Your new WVP.
This year I had the opportunity to help out being band director. I had receive the band's later than the norm. I got together
with Keith Marney to assure the band's were sent out as quick as possible. Working side by side with Keith we had great
responce from members , so well it was great hearing from others wanting to rejoin and getting new members. Our
numbers had decline a bit but still today we have members that are still joining up.
Here I have a list of members with there band series numbers for 2017. Next year Keith is going to have a job on his
hands. There is going to be a little change on members with numbers over the 5500 mark that there series number may be
lowered. And there are open series numbers on the 1000 to 4000 series. So the ones that have 100 or more band request
may have this opportunity to get a lowered band series number. For sure the members that have series higher than 6000
will be lowered for next year. We appreciate your support on making our club stronger. The sooner you order your bands
will surely help. Keith Marney and Matt Matuska tag teem will assure you they will get your bands to you asap and are
two dedicated persons to our breed that are eager to help out.
I would like to give thanks to every one that had confidence in me to except this challenge. But since the voters decided to
have the secretary take on the band director position I still will give them some assistance if needed. Thank you all Tony
Cardoza

HOF Inductees 2018: Larry Eastman & Dean Holcomb Just a bit about Larry and Dean.
Larry has been a consistent member of the NWOETC since 1973, he has had West since years before
that. Larry has served the club in several different capacities including being the Pres., Sec./Treas.,
bulletin editor and board member. Most recently as a District 5 Director and bulletin editor.
Larry has traveled to, showed and judged West’s at show across the country even before most started
doing so. He has judged more Pageants than any other member/West breeder. He also is responsible for
bringing white bar baldheads to West’s many years ago and made many of those available to other West
fanciers.
Dean was in the club going back to the 70’s till his untimely passing in 2015.
Dean is responsible for bringing barless pattern West’s to the breed quite a number of years ago first
with barless blues. He served as our band director for many years taking over from his dad Curt.
Dean too could be counted on at shows to act as show secretary, line up stewards and getting the results
recorded.
Dean due to health issues was not able to attend many outside of Caliornia shows but was a ficture at
local shows.
Both Larry and Dean are certainly worthy of being in the NWOETC Hall of Fame.
The Passing of Jim Bishop (1936-2017)by Robert "Bob" Nolan
The pigeon fancy on Saturday Oct.14th lost a stalwart from the "old days". It was a time when all
breed judges and fanciers who kept many varieties of pigeons were more common than today. James
"Jim" Bishop came from Arkansas to California along with his brother Lew and broke into the Southern
California pigeon fancy during the heydays of the mid 1950s. Like many just getting started he kept
many breeds (often as many as 800) in his Tujunga Canyon home. Among his favorites over the years
were Modenas, Flying Rollers, Helmets and Wests to mention but a few. He spent his working years at
Lockheed Aircraft where he was a friend of Bob Nolan's dad Leonard.
Jim was a great showman often bringing a couple hundred birds to the Pomona and Del Mar
Fairs. He was influenced as a young man by Bill Hague who served as one of his mentors in the old
Southern California Roller Club. Jim modeled himself after Hague having many breeds, large numbers
of birds and educating himself to be an all breed judge.
Perhaps his greatest contribution was the instilling his love of pigeons in his son Terry. Terry has
gone onto great success with West of England Tumblers and he no doubt would credit his dad with sound
advice and constant encouragement. Jim judged Wests and English Trumpeters over the years at the
Pageant attesting to his knowledge of those popular breeds.
When he moved to the Palmdale/Lancaster area he resided in a mobile home. He even tried
keeping his birds in his mobile home but got turned in by a neighbor and his pigeon keeping days came to
an end. From then on he enjoyed the hobby vicariously thru Terry and they often attended shows
together. He had a great love of pigeons for his entire life. Those of us who knew him are better off for
the experience. Rest in peace brother Jim you will always be fondly remembered.
