The Grand Lodge of Massa-chusetts held its annual Purple Aster Ball on Saturday, Novem-ber 3, 2012 at the American Legion Nonantum Post #440 in Newton, Massachusetts. This was a change of venue from pre-vious years, and it was greatly appreciated by those who at-tended. The co-chairmen for this special evening were State Trustees Margaret Campbell and Denise Furnari.

The evening began with pho-tos of the State offi cers, followed by a cocktail reception with cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, and vegetable crudités.

To begin the formal dinner, Executive Director Paul M. Guida introduced special guest Deputy Consul General of Italy Dr. Luigi Munno, and State Chaplain Reverend Gregory Mercurio. They were followed by the Chairmen of Perma-nent Commissions, Benefit Insurance Commission offi cers, State Offi cers, National Second Vice President and State Past President Joseph Russo and his wife Pauline, and State Presi-dent James DiStefano and First Lady Kathy DiStefano. President DiStefano thanked

everyone in attendance and noted that he was sure that our next State President would surely re-appoint both Sister Margaret Campbell and Sister Denise Furnari for the excellent job they did of organizing and coordinating this evening.

The national anthem of Italy was sung by Brother Ross Zagami and the Star Spangled Banner by Stephen Savio, and Father Gregory Mercurio gave the invocation. A full-course dinner was served by Maria’s Catering, consisting of a fi eld greens salad, cavatelli, stuffed chicken breast with gravy, oven roasted potatoes, Italian style green beans with oil and garlic, and dessert. There was also a set-up for espresso and coffee after dinner.

Although attendance was small the attendees made up for this short coming. Natu-rally, this was partly attributed to the excellent musical styl-ings of Stephen Savio and his orchestra. His music and sing-ing brought all to the dance fl oor and enabled everyone to be a part of the evening.

Thanks go to our co-chairmen Margaret Campbell and Denise

Furnari, as well as our pho-tographer Dom Campochiaro for some great shots. Thank you to Marisa Ranalli for her aid with organizing the offi cers for pictures and captioning the photos.

In celebration of Oc-tober Italian Heritage Month, the Grand Lodge of Massachu-setts sponsored a Kickoff Dinner Dance on Saturday, Septem-ber 29, 2012 at the Watertown Sons of Italy. The co-chair-men for this celebra-tion were State Sec-ond Vice President Antonio Sestito and Immediate Past Presi-dent Florence Ferullo Kane.

The evening be-gan with cocktails followed by a buffet

dinner. Brother Sestito and Sister Kane are to be congratulated for the very tasteful buffet which they prepared that day with help from Stephen Cedrone and Michelle Bertoldi. The event was sold out, not only because it was the Heritage Month Dinner Dance, but for another special presentation that took place.

Prior to that evening, the Grand Lodge learned that Dr. Giuseppe Pastorelli, Consul General of Italy in Boston, would bestow upon State President James DiStefano the rank of “Il Cavaliere”. The honor is bestowed under the Ordine Della Stella D’Italia, or the Order of the Star of Italy, which is an honorable institution of the Republic of Italy. It is granted by the President of the Republic to those who promote Italian national prestige abroad, such as the promotion of Italian language and culture and participation in charitable and philanthropic activities.

The presentation was conducted by Dr. Giuseppe Pastorelli and it left many of us speechless, including the recipient, State President James DiStefano. This was such an honor for our State President and everyone attending that evening.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,Kathy and I hope all our

Brothers and Sisters had a great Thanksgiving, spending it with their family and friends. This time of year we must all stop and give thanks for all the things we have and pray for those who are not as fortunate.

One of the great blessings in my life is becoming a member of the Order Sons of Italy, and meeting so many great Brothers and Sisters.

I am urging all the lodges that have lost their NON-PROFIT-status to PLEASE, PLEASE, file for reinstatement. If you are not reinstated, the IRS could consider you a small business which means you may have to pay taxes. If you need help please call the Grand Lodge or the National office, and we will guide you as best we can.

I would like to thank and con-gratulate two great cooks and co-chairman of the Italian Heri-tage Diner Dance, sister Flor-ence Kane and Brother Tony Sestito, for the outstanding event they and their committee

organized. I’m sure I speaking for all 265 members who were in attendance. For those of you who were not able to attend there’s always next year, but you best get your tickets early.

This year’s Purple Aster Diner Dance chaired by Sister Denise Furnari and Sister Margaret Campbell was once again a great night. Thank you to both chairman and their committee for an outstanding event.

I and Sister Marylou Abba-tessa along with her committee would like to invite all of our Brothers and Sisters to join us at the North End Nursing Home for our annual visit, on Sunday December 9, 2012. On January 6, 2013 we will be visiting the Don Orione Nursing Home. If you have never been, this is a great experience. Please call the Grand Lodge to register.

On January 27, 2013 Brother Aldo Caira Jr. Sports Commis-sioner and his committee will again hold a Triathlon of Games at the Quincy Lodge.

If you can play Darts, Crib-bage, or Scrabble, this is the place to showoff you talents,

come join in the fun with your Brothers and Sisters. Please call the Grand Lodge to sign up.

A reminder of the Sons of Italy Foundation Super Bowl Sweep-stakes, donate $10 on line at osia.org, and win a chance to watch the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl next Febru-ary. You can win airfare for two to New Orleans, two tickets to the BIG GAME, a four night stay in a fi ve star hotel and various Super Bowl amenities. Everyone is welcome to enter.

I would like to thank all of the Lodges that have invited Kathy and me to their Christ-mas Parties, and apologize to those we could not attend due to confl icts.

To all of our Brothers and Sisters, Kathy and I wish each and every one of you a Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo, and please remember it’s Merry Christmas not Happy Holiday, we’re still celebrating the birth of Christ.

May God Bless you all, bless the Sons of Italy, and bless our service men and women over-seas protection our freedom.

As the saying goes, “rain, rain, go away, come again another day.” This was the theme for most of the day on Sunday, Sep-tember 30 at the Bocce Tourna-ment. The rain did not deter the hardy souls who commit-ted to playing Bocce, as teams from as far away as Worcester, Methuen, and Rockland came prepared and ready to compete. Sports Commission Chairman Aldo Caira explained the format for the day, and State President James DiStefano thanked ev-eryone for participating under the less-than-ideal conditions, wishing everyone good luck. As the day progressed and the bocce courts became wetter and in some cases, riddled with puddles, the steadfast group continued to play.

The Watertown Sons of Italy maintenance crew did what they could to make the field playable. Players looked for towels, umbrellas, plastic bags, anything to try to stay dry. The players and spectators perse-vered and eventually the rain let up, the cold lifted and the

As the evening progressed, many of us were introduced for the fi rst time to the musical stylings of Stephen Savio and his orchestra. Stephen has a way of reaching everyone. He walked around the perimeter of the hall singing many old and new songs, in both Italian and English. Very few remained seated as they joined others on the dance fl oor. It was a true party night!

We thank everyone who par-ticipated by bringing in lovely raffl e baskets, gifts, and des-serts. The committee was a hard working one and we thank them.

We also extend many thanks to Domenic Campochiaro for his wonderful photography.

The co-chairmen, State Sec-ond Vice President Antonio Ses-tito and Immediate Past Presi-dent Florence Ferullo Kane, as well as their committee, are to be congratulated for all their hard work.

A Sicilian Christmas Fig Cookie

DAY 1: Place dried fi gs in bowl with wine and water to soak overnight. Cover and refrigerate. (Less liquid may be required if you are not using dried fi gs.)

DAY 2: Chop fi gs or mince in food processor. Add black pepper, walnuts and mix in bowl.

DOUGH PREPARATION: Place fl our, sugar and salt in a twelve-inch bowl. Add slightly beaten egg and oil. Add water gradually until mixture holds together. Remove from bowl. Knead to smooth consistency. Cut into four portions. Roll individual portions into long rolls one-inch thick. Cut these rolls into three-inch portions. Place in bowl. Keep covered. With rolling pin, roll each three-inch portion into long strips approximately 1 ½ inches wide. Place fi lling in center of strip with teaspoon. Fold sides over. Turn so seam is on bottom. Press to fl atten slightly. Cut pieces diagonally about 1 ½ inches long. Longer pieces can be shaped as S’s or U’s or round-like doughnuts. Slit sides with point of knife before bak-ing. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake in preheated, 400°F oven for twenty to twenty-fi ve minutes. Tops will not color much. Bottoms will brown. Cool before storing in a canister.

NOTE: During Christmas week, relatives gathered in one of the homes to make this traditional Christmas cookie. I particularly loved watching my grandmother and Aunt Marianna shape thin rounds of dough with the rolling pin. Then they placed the fi g mixture in the center of each round of dough and proceeded to gently pinch pleat the dough around the fi g fi lling. It created a small tart. Not having mastered that procedure, I continue to shape my Cannalicchi as mentioned in the recipe.

Over the past three months, the OSIA Comunita Manage-ment Team has visited more than ten Lodges to explain the OSIA Comunita mission to our members. The response has been overwhelmingly favor-able at every Lodge we have visited. With each Lodge visit we become more enthused and optimistic about the future of OSIA Comunita and its broad acceptance by our members.

Recently, the decision was made to structure OSIA Comu-nita into three separate initia-tives: Connection, Knowledge, and Dignity. Once this deci-sion was made it became clear that we needed a management team to manage each initiative separately from each other, but with a high degree of coordination.

Today the OSIA Comunita Management Team consists of three individuals. State Re-cording Secretary Ron Hill has taken on responsibility for the Connection initiative. Brother Ron is responsible for managing the Grand Lodge’s website and is the ideal person to oversee the development of the OSIA Comunita website which will be the primary facilitator for this initiative. Brother David Covucci is taking on responsi-bility for the Knowledge initia-tive. Brother Dave, the creator of the OSIA Comunita concept, brings thirty years of manage-ment consulting experience and fi nancial advisory credentials to the table. State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito has taken on responsibility for the Ambassador program. Brother Tony brings a wealth of knowl-edge of our Lodges and many of the individuals in those Lodges to this very important role.

Following are descriptions of the three major initiatives of OSIA Comunita.

Connection (Connessione)“If we can connect our more

than 7,000 members, they will fi nd ways to help each other.”

OSIA Comunita is building a website to facilitate connec-tion of all of our members to each other. When this website is completed members will be able to put up their individual profi les (including a picture of their smiling face) so that oth-ers can see who they are and what skills they have to offer. A member who is looking for help with some task will be able to go to the website and search for other members who can help them with that task. Once they fi nd each other they will be able

to negotiate their own terms of engagement.

For example, a retired plumb-er may put up his or her profi le and identify their special skill as “plumber”. They may post a fee for their services or they may leave it open to individual negotiation. Members who need the services of a plumber can go to the website and they may fi nd several Brothers or Sisters who might meet their needs. They will then be able to select someone who lives near them, offers the lowest fee for service, or seems to be the most capa-ble. They can then contact the individual member to negotiate a service agreement, or they might send a message to all of them stating what their problem is and what they can afford to pay for their services.

Adriana Guida, the Webmas-ter for the Grand Lodge website, is building the OSIAComunita.org website under the guidance of Brother Ron Hill. As they fi nd ways to overcome the hurdles, we are getting closer to imple-mentation.

Knowledge (Conoscenza):“We help ourselves by learning

how to help ourselves.”In coming months we will

start to implement a program of seminars that will give our members the knowledge they need to deal with personal is-sues. For example, we are inves-tigating a Medicare/Medicaid seminar for members who will be confronting the very complex details of these programs. Per-sonal fi nancial strategies that can save your family thousands of dollars will be explained. An-other possible seminar will be college fi nancial planning for families with high school age children.

We plan to use these semi-nars as a recruiting tool for Italian Americans who are not members of OSIA but who might benefi t from the seminar. By inviting them to attend these seminars we hope to grow our membership by demonstrating to non-members some of the benefi ts that come from mem-bership.

Over time we will fi nd many different kinds of seminars to offer our members. They may range from serious financial planning issues to practical issues such as how to avoid identity theft and financial scams. Several years ago one of our Lodges offered a class, taught by one of the Lodge members, on how to cut up a side of beef. They contacted Ital-

ian Americans in their area and attracted more than 75 non-members to the class. Almost 50 of those attendees decided to become members. We will encourage members who have special skills to consider offer-ing classes at our Lodges.

Dignity (Dignita): “We are committed to doing as

much as possible to makes sure our members live their lives with dignity.”

With more than 7,000 mem-bers in the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, there are un-doubtedly many of us who are struggling in one way or anoth-er. Some are unemployed, some suffer from poor health, some are in dire fi nancial straits, and some struggle for other reasons. We believe it is our duty to do what we can to help these members in whatever way we can. We will never solve all the problems our members face, but if we can help even one member we have done some-thing meaningful to strengthen our fraternal bonds.

The challenge with our “Dig-nity” mission is identifying members who truly need help. Most of our members who are struggling have too much “Ital-ian Pride” to ask for help and would rather try to climb out of their struggles without ever letting any of their Brothers or Sisters know that they are struggling. On the other hand we don’t want to encourage people to become members just so that they can get free assistance. This will be a fi ne line to walk.

In order to reach out to those members who truly need help OSIA Comunita will be imple-menting an AmbassadorPro-gram. We will be seeking out individuals at all of our Lodges who will act as Ambassadors for OSIA Comunita. These individuals will be selected on a number of criteria, most important of which is their com-mitment to OSIA Comunita’s mission, and their promise to maintain the confi dentiality of members who need help. Over time, our Ambassadors will become the local experts on how to use the OSIA Comunita website and how to interact with other Lodge Ambassadors and the Grand Lodge to carry out the OSIA Comunita mission. As they establish their role and credibility other members will come to understand that there is someone they can trust who is committed to fi nding a way to help them.

What Can You Do?As we grow the OSIA Comu-

nita team we will be looking for Brothers and Sisters who are passionate about creat-ing a community across all of our Lodges. It is not too early to start identifying individuals who want to become part of the team, so whether you have an interest in becoming an Ambas-sador for your Lodge, delivering a class or seminar, or playing an active role in the overall ad-ministration of OSIA Comunita, we would like to hear from you. If you have a particularly good suggestion for a service that OSIA Comunita can deliver to help our members please let us know. We would like to hear from you, so please contact through the Grand Lodge offi ce at 617-489-5234.

This year’s bocce season came to a close with the annual Bocce Banquet which was held on Monday, October 22, 2012 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Center. Kudos to our Chairman Kevin Mercadante and all his commit-tee members who helped make this year a great success!

This year a new team came on board — the Mobilio Insur-ance team, who also happened to be the winners of Division B and the winners of the annual Tommy Colletta Sportsmanship award! The team members are Captain Arthur Allard, Mark Mobilio, Vincent Allard, Michael Mobilio, Joseph Mobilio, and Mark Lundstrum.

The winner of Division A was the team Italia: Captain Tom Colletta, Angelo Arcuri, Francesco Froio, Rocco Leone, Tony Froio, Matthew Froio and Bob Perrone. Every player was congratulated for a wonderful season, for a display of great camaraderie, and especially for their great sportsmanship. Many new friendships were forged during this season and many longstanding ones were re-affi rmed.

President Nickerson welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked them all for coming. He also gave a few comments on the Lodge’s history. Vice President Ed Rizzardini gave the

invocation and Steve Cozzaglio introduced everyone who was present.

The buffet menu included garden salad, chicken marsala, baked scrod, oven roasted pota-toes, vegetable of the day, pasta with marinara sauce, ham, rolls, coffee, tea, and cake for dessert.

The Worcester Lodge #168 celebrated Italian Heritage Month with several events which were held at the Worces-ter Public Library. Sharing and letting others know of the rich heritage, culture, and customs of Italian-Americans is an im-portant, integral part of the organization, and celebrating Italian Heritage Month is a ma-jor part of this mission.

The month-long series of events began with a kickoff session of sharing the art, ar-tifacts, photography, and his-tory of Italian Americans at the library. The Worcester Public Li-brary graciously let Lodge #168 use their Saxe Room and 8 of their display cases to showcase the artifacts, and hold special public programs for the com-munity. With the help of Elena Olivieri, the Worcester Histori-cal Society was kind enough to loan a portion of their priceless photographs by Worcester’s own Chip Simone that depict many Italian Americans in Worcester’s “Little Italy” on Shrewsbury St. Local Worcester native artist, graphic designer, and professor Donald Tarallo graciously agreed to display

his photographs and artifacts, and paintings by Bonnie Fed-erico and Iris Lanyon were on display throughout the month. Members of our own Lodge also agreed to display their precious artifacts and family treasures during the month and were instrumental in recruiting and organizing the artists and dis-plays of artifacts. In addition, lodge members Vittoria Mas-trocola and Caterina Valentine volunteered to don their Vene-tian Jester costumes as part of the celebration.

This fi rst event was attended by members of the Grand Lodge including National Second Vice President Joseph Russo, State President James and Kathy DiStefano, State First Vice President Carmelita Bello, State Trustee Margaret Camp-bell, Lodge President Donna Giuliani, Lodge Vice President Mary Ann Bello, and many lodge members and members of the Worcester community. It is a lot of work and effort to organize these events, a fact well known by anyone who has undertaken the task. State First Vice President Carmelita Bello acknowledged this and thanked

all who had in any way helped in making these events success-ful, especially Joan D’Argenis, Elena Olivieri, Paula Riggieri, Linda Dattis, Mary Ann Bello, Donna Giuliani, Vittoria Mas-trocola, Caterina Valentine, and Margaret Abboud. The Lodge would also like to thank every-one who took the time to attend these events.

State Pres ident James DiStefano spoke to the attend-ees about the benefi ts of belong-ing to the Sons of Italy, and how proud we are and should be to be members and share our heritage. National Second Vice President Joseph Russo spoke of the great work being done nation-wide for various charitable organizations, and showed a video from the Na-tional Educational Leadership Foundation. He also explained the work and mission of the Commission for Social Justice, which helps to fi ght stereotyp-ing of all people.

The second event, also held at the Worcester Public Library, was Italian Movie Night. Lodge #168 opened the evening to all members of the community to see the movie Cinema Paradiso. Rev. Walters gave a brief his-tory of the movie so attendees could get an understanding of it prior to viewing. The movie was well received and much ap-preciated by all who attended. Refreshments were provided by Lodge members. The evening was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

The last event held was a wonderful presentation on Sicily given by Ross Zagami. He and his wife were kind enough to come to Worces-ter and speak on Sicily, its beauty, its culture and its food! Mr. Zagami was enthusiastic and his love of Sicily came through in his presentation. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time and enjoyed each other’s company.

The month-long celebration was very successful and many members of the community enjoyed the displays, the movie, and the presentations. We extend a great big “thank you” to everyone who made this possible and everyone who participated!

On Saturday, October 6, 2012, the Vittorio Veneto Lodge #1035 held its annual Columbus Day Dinner Dance at the Venus Demilo Restaurant in Swansea. Alan Amaral, Chairman of the celebration committee, was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, which was attended by a number of state and local dignitaries, including a Congressman. Mayor William Flanagan gave the greetings from the city of Fall River. State Senator Michael Rodrigues was also present and a few remarks were given by the newly redistricted Congressman William Keating (9th District).

Following in our tradition of recognizing a member of our Lodge, our honoree for this year was Mr. Tony D’Adamo, a long time leader in the organization and in the community. There were also raffl es and door prizes. But the highlight, as always, is the crowning of Miss Columbus, who will go on to represent our organization in numerous civic activities from the Veterans Day Parade to the Memorial Day Parade. This year’s Miss Columbus is Erica Macri Dube, a student at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. Erica is involved in scores of extra-curricular activities and charities ranging from her school newspaper to the orchestra, chorus, and drama club. She is also involved in the Relay for Life and numerous 5K runs that raise funds for various charities. Christine Gibney chaired this year’s Miss Columbus selection committee and they selected an outstanding candidate. We congratulate Erica on her crowning and offer best wishes as she undertakes her duties as Miss Columbus.

The Columbus Day celebration concluded on Monday, Octo-ber 8 when the Lodge gathered at a monument honoring Italian-American War Veterans at Columbus Park for a 21-gun salute followed by a Memorial Mass at Holy Rosary Church.

At a time when it seems that Columbus Day is not celebrated to the degree is use to be, the Vittorio Veneto Lodge #1035 keeps the celebration and its meaning alive with this, its signature event of the year.

In celebration of Italian Heritage Month, on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 donated $300 to the Brockton Public Library for the purchase of a variety of fi ction and non-fi ction books pertaining to Italian culture and heritage. This second annual event has been successful in promoting Italian culture to the Greater Brockton area and the Old Colony Library Network. Event Chairman Jacky Bonarrigo, Vice President Todd Petti, President Richard Alfonso, and Brockton Public Librarian Lucia Shannon worked together to select the diverse collection of books and plan the event.

Mark E. Linde, Chairman of the Library Board of Trustees and a new member of the Brockton Lodge, accepted the check on behalf of the Library. He thanked Lodge President Richard Alfonso, Vice President Todd Petti as well as other Lodge members for their generous contribution. Everyone had the opportunity to view the wonderful array of books now available for lending at the Brockton Public Library and through the Old Colony Network.

A wonderful array of Italian refreshments were served and enjoyed by everyone including pizzelle with Nutella fi lling.

For a complete list of the books purchased for both years, and any questions, you may call Jacquelyn at 508-584-9450 or Richard at 508-238-4814.

At the annual anniversary dinner dance held on Satur-day, November 10, Mary A. Mercorelli was named the Fran-cesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411’s Woman of the Year.

A member since Novem-ber 3, 2003, Mary was chosen based upon her dedication and tireless volunteerism, which includes masterful baking for such events as the monthly meetings, lodge sponsored fl ea markets, and Natick Day bake sales, where she takes charge of the tables including pricing and the artful display of goods. In addition, she bakes as well as volunteers for the weekly revenue-producing pasta night dinners that are open to the public, only missing a week if one of her other organizations — the Red Hats or her Ashland Lions Club — hosts an event to which she has committed herself.

Mary is always the fi rst to say, “Okay, what can I do?” during meetings and planning for the lodge’s fund raising activities or yearly cleaning projects, be it

painting, cleaning the kitchen, or readying the outdoor property for the start of bocce season in the spring, where she is also a skilled player and valued league member.

A beautiful lady of poise and grace, with arms filled with flo-ral bouquets, and sur-rounded by family and friends, Mary humbly accepted not only the award presented by Lodge but also a cita-tion bestowed upon her by the Grand Lodge.

While presenting Mary with her awards, President Christopher Piccioli listed her many contri-butions to her beloved fraternal order as well as her dedication to other organizations to which she belongs, and her accep-tance speech noted the enjoy-ment and fun she has in all of her endeavors.

The catered dinner included roast beef with, in Mary’s words, “all the trimmings,” and DJ Giovanni Lavanga played per-fect mood music during the meal and then cranked it up for the dancing that ended the evening’s affair.

September’s gathering was off and running with over fi fty Winthrop Ladies Lodge #2071 members and Red Hatters at-tending a wonderful afternoon at the Suffolk Downs Race Track. We enjoyed the buf-fet luncheon served in the Clubhouse. Group sales man-ager Dominic Terlizzi shared some “how-to’s” for placing our wages and preparing us for what was the 3rd race for the Lodge. A.V. Jordan, with jockey Jean Claude Medina, was the winner.

The “photo fi nish” of the day was our “Win — Place — Show” hat contest. There were many creative hats entered. Susan Olson was crowned the Winner, while Place was awarded to Pat Boyd, and Show was captured by Irene Fallon; an Honorable Mention went to Dr. MarieConners. Thank you to our judges, Lucille, Dee, Linda, Margie, and Fran. A special note of appreciation goes out to Anne and Pam for the awarded prizes.

October was Italian Heritage Month as well as Emergency Preparedness Month. The la-dies gathered at Winthrop’s Center Café for an enjoyable early supper and a wonderful presentation by Rick and Kath-leen Savage. We Italians have a long standing romance with good food and it is always a pleasure dining at the Café.

Rick demonstrated the latest CPR techniques and answered a number of questions. Kathy Savage, MSN, ARNP, BC MDS Enrollment Nurse Practitioner, spoke of the many concerns of seniors about safety measures in the home and caring for medications, and had many informative pamphlets to share with the ladies. The Lodge gave each attendee a Vile of Life medical information holder.

Under New Business it was decided that the Lodge will hold its meetings during daylight hours at various locations as many sisters have expressed concerns around driving at night.

Our annual November Memo-rial Mass and Pot Luck Supper will undergo a few changes, in-cluding moving to St. John the Evangelist church to celebrate at their 9 o’clock mass followed with a brunch at Cimino’s Café in Winthrop.

A notice of these changes was mailed to the membership-at-large and fi led with the Grand Lodge.

Our December Christmas Luncheon is set for Tuesday, December 4 and will feature an enjoyable luncheon consisting of plated choice of veal orveto, chicken pot pie or baked had-dock with all the fi xings. The owner of Alia’s and the Rustic Table promises a gala after-noon to welcome in the holiday season.

Bereavement Brunch/Luncheons

On Sunday, October 14, 2012, Worcester Lodge #168 celebrated Columbus Day with a Sunday brunch after a wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Cristoforo Columbo located at Union Station.

The wreath laying ceremony was held with members of the Lodge, the city government, and the State Council attend-ing, including State President James DiStefano and his wife Kathy. State First Vice Presi-dent Carmelita Bello addressed those attending as did Lodge Vice President Mary Ann Bel-lo, who also coordinated the events.

After the wreath laying cer-emony and short addresses by the city dignitaries, Lodge President Donna Giuliani, State President James DiStefano, and State First Vice President Carmelita Bello, the events moved to Our Lady of Mt. Car-mel Church where a Memorial

Mass was celebrated by Chap-lain Msgr. F. Stephen Pedone in memory of the Lodge’s deceased members. Lodge Vice President Mary Ann Bello read the names of members who had passed away in the past year: Lola

DiGiovanni, Italia Lomartire, and Ida Mangiulli. They are greatly missed and fondly re-membered.

Msgr. Pedone is the new Chaplain of the Lodge, accept-ing the position and taking over

the reins from Msgr. Rocco Pic-colomini, who recently retired. Msgr. Pedone spoke of the value of remembering the hardships our ancestors lived through, and our Italian heritage and customs. He stated that he was happy to be part of an organi-zation as great as the Order of Sons of Italy in America and looked forward to working with the members.

After the Memorial Mass, members and guests celebrated Columbus Day with a Sunday brunch at Maxwell Silverman’s on Grove Street in Worcester. The gathering was a leisurely enjoyment of each other’s com-pany and included conversa-tions of ideas for celebrating our Italian heritage and culture at future events. Everyone in atten-dance enjoyed the celebrations.

Two hundred fifty people gathered at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wilmington on Saturday, November 3 to witness the induction of the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183 into the Wilmington High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was the brain-child of Aldo A. Caira, a resident of Wilmington and a National and State Past President of the Order Sons of Italy in America. His son, Aldo Caira

Jr., current president of the Lodge and Sports Commis-sion Chairman for the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, ac-cepted the honor on behalf of its members. He noted with pride that the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge is the only or-ganization in Wilmington to have achieved the honor of Benefactor.

The following are the remarks of Toastmaster James Stewart, who lauded the Lodge’s gener-

osity to the Town of Wilmington in general and to the schools’ athletic programs:

“On March 12, 1967, an idea was put into motion by three active people – Laura Caira, Frances Gray, and George Murray – which would have a significant impact on not only the Athletic Program at Wilmington High School, but the entire Town, as well. This idea would become the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183, Order Sons of Italy in America. It was to become one of the most charitable organizations in the Town of Wilmington.

From their first meetings held in the Wilmington Skating Club, through their aggressive fundraising programs and their members, the Sons of Italy built a permanent lodge home on Ballardvale Street in Wilm-ington and opened its doors in 1976.

It would become a social center for the members and the residents of Wilmington. It was the hub of fundraising for the community and the Sons of Italy. A leader in chari-table donations to the Town of Wilmington, they continued their work at this location for twenty years, until a decision was made to sell the building in 1996. The sale of the property did not slow down the Sons of Italy from their social activities,

fundraising ventures or support of the community. They have taken on a larger role of provid-ing for all ages in the Town of Wilmington.

The Wilmington Sons of Italy has donated many items to the Town, which include: a DARE police car, senior citizen handicapped-accessible van, two thermal imaging devices for WFD, and a Fire Department pick-up truck. They provided funding to repair the Gazebo on the Town Common and to assist the Town with numerous other endeavors.

The Lodge provides fi nancial support to other non-profit organizations in Wilmington, including Local Heroes, iPods for Wounded Warriors, Commu-nity Fund Food Pantry, Wildcat Athletic Alumni & Friends, and the Wilmington Band Parents. They support the Relay for Life, various Recreation and Senior Citizen Department programs, and provide generous support to Wilmington Memorial Library by sponsoring a family plan to the New England Aquarium. Additionally, the Lodge spon-sors and supports Wilmington youth athletic activities, includ-ing Little League, Youth Hockey, Pop Warner, TOPS Soccer, and Youth Soccer.

They have been a major con-tributor to the Wilmington School system, installing new

playgrounds and equipment at the North Intermediate School and Woburn Street School, and providing stadium jackets for the wildcat Marching Band and uniforms for the Color Guard. Since their existence, they have provided thousands of dollars in scholarship aid to Wilmington students.

The support of the Sons of Italy to the Wildcat Family has been tremendous. They have provided electronic scoreboards for Alumni Stadium, the Dick Scanlon Baseball Field, and the Lacrosse Field at the Woburn Street School; indoor batting cages for the baseball and softball teams; and assisted in the purchase of uniforms for various Wildcat Sports Teams. They have sponsored the Wilm-ington High School Holiday Wrestling Tournament for twen-ty-fi ve years, which is consid-ered one of the most prestigious tournaments in Massachusetts high school sports. As a result of their dedication to youth sports, the Wilmington Sons of Italy was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Athletic Department is very appreciative for the con-tinuing support of the Sons of Italy, and is proud to salute them as a deserving inductee of the Wilmington High School Athletic Hall of Fame.”

PORTSMOUTH — A slice of Italian life was shared at the local Sons of Italy Lodge 2303’s annual Octoberfest Italian heri-tage festival.

With the smell of sausage, meatballs and sauce wafting through the air, and Ports-mouth resident Bi l l Webb crooning along with his favor-ite Italian love songs by Jimmy Roselli, the scene at the 1845 School House at the Plains was straight out of Little Italy.

Lodge President John Sem-prini said the festival helps shine a spotlight on the local Sons of Italy and brings in new members. Everything from the food to the seating required volunteers to prepare, and Sem-prini credited a “faithful” crew for making the event possible.

Among the guests who sought out applications for member-ship to the Sons of Italy were Rye residents Andrea and Bill Pierce, who moved to the Sea-

coast from Hollis a couple of months ago. Andrea Pierce said her family is Italian and when she saw an article in the news-paper previewing the festival, she and her husband decided to attend.

“Because we’re new to the area, we wanted to meet some new people,” she said.

Her husband, who has an Irish background, said the atmosphere at the Sons of Italy event was familiar. “I feel like I’m at one of her family reunions,” he said.

lies now several generations removed from their ancestors who immigrated to the United States, Semprini said that heritage seems less important to some people. But celebrat-ing where you come from is something everyone should do, he added.

“If you learn a little bit about

your heritage, you learn a little bit of pride in yourself,” he said.

There was plenty of heritage and history to be learned as guests sat together and talked about the meals their parents used to prepare, the trips to the local butcher shop they would take as kids, and other stories about life in Portsmouth’s old North End.

Some lamented the loss of the old Italian neighbor-hood located around Russell and Deer streets, which was razed during urban renew-al in the 1960s. Portsmouth reside Dick Fusegni said his father wanted to buy back their home, which still stands on The Hill today, from the city, but the city kept it to use as a senior recreation facility. He said that once the city moved its senior center to Parrott Avenue, it sold his father’s old home.

“That wasn’t part of urban renewal. That wasn’t part of the rules,” he said.

Also in attendance Sunday were some members of the Rochester Sons of Italy Lodge 2380. Lodge President Michael DelloIacono said it was nice to mingle with Sons of Italy mem-bers from another community.

“We always try to support our clubs,” he said.

“Not only that, the sausage is good,” added Rochester lodge member John Mammone.
