OVERVIEW
FEATURE
At Auto Shanghai 2015, 39 models of renewable vehicles were unveiled, indicating that
light-weighting technologies have again become a key topic of discussion for the auto
industry. Clearly, there is no doubt that aluminum has become the material of choice to
support automotive light weighting, since aluminum helps reduce vehicle body mass, boost
fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
However, applying aluminum to mass-produced vehicles comes with a fresh set of challenges
for OEMs. For example, how can materials be sourced in the volume and specifications
required for high volume production, and how are the optimal joining and casting techniques
determined for mixed material manufacturing?
Novelis, the world’s leading supplier of aluminum sheet for the automotive industry, can answer these questions.
James Liu introduced Novelis’ overall approaches to support high-volume aluminum production for automotive light
weighting at the Automobile Key Tech Forum 2015 during Auto Shanghai 2015.
Novelis’ Approaches
James was quoted in a CCTV News interview “Aluminum is quickly becoming the material of choice to reduce vehicle body mass, boost fuel economy and
reduce CO2 emissions. Novelis is regarded as a partner in automotive aluminum applications helping local OEMs
to upgrade technologies and develop new material to make cars lighter and more fuel-ecient.”

Novelis, the global market leader in automotive aluminum applications, showcased a portfolio of cutting-edge
automotive aluminum applications at Auto Shanghai 2015, the 16th International Automobile and Manufacturing
Technology Exhibition from April 20 to April 29. The hero products in the Advanz™ automotive product portfolio
provide automakers with high volume aluminum solutions for light weighting and improving vehicle performance
while achieving cost eciency.
Novelis is the only company that is capable of manufacturing
high-end rolled aluminum automotive products in all three of the
world’s auto-producing continents: Europe, North America and
Asia. Opened in October 2014, the Novelis Changzhou plant is
China’s first facility dedicated to manufacturing automotive sheet
for heat treatment and finishing before being delivered to
customers in Asia and elsewhere.
Novelis' unrivaled research and technology capabilities have helped to pioneer the widespread adoption of
aluminum in the auto industry. Novelis aluminum products are now featured in more than 180 models of vehicles
produced by leading automakers around the globe and in premier global automotive brands in China, including the
SGM Cadillac XTS hood, Audi A6L door, Audi Q3 tailgate and Daimler E-class fender.
On April 20, James Liu, Managing Director of Novelis China and Vice President, Automotive for Novelis Asia spoke to
the media at an exclusive event, which generated over 80 stories.
Leading in Safety and Durability
Advanced forming, high-speed joining and strength contribute to the safety and durability of vehicles
Novelis has invested significantly in developing high-performing alloys that satisfy the requirements of all applications.
Advanz™ is one product brand that has been designated for light-weighted vehicles. A series of products for exterior
and inner structures are available. For example, the Advanz™ e170 featured in the Range Rover XJ model reduces the
thickness of the body-side to 1.1 mm, 27 percent thinner than the old models while enlarging the single piece. If OEMs
require advanced formability, Advanz™ e200 can meet higher requirements for exterior structure, while Advanz™
s200 is one product for inner-doors that has met BWM standards.
Advanz™ s200 is also weldable without filler metal - the
result of Novelis’ pioneer initiative in developing a new
remote weldable aluminum alloy that is specifically
designed for applications in body structure based on the
Fusion Technology. This technology supports massive
welds, is extremely ecient and inexpensive when
compared to the traditional welding process, due to less
material required for flange.

Novelis Advanz™ Product Portfolio
Consumers challenge the safety of using aluminum in automobiles compared to steel. However, noting its use in
aircrafts, using aluminum in automobiles could be a better choice for safety especially with its feature of
absorbing crash energy. Novelis Advanz™ c300 and s615 are famous for their ability to absorb crash energy.
Compared to its 5754 equivalent, Advanz™ c300 can save 20 percent in weight and 9 percent in spending per
vehicle, with 12,000 tons of CO2 in tailpipe emissions. To be introduced in 2015, Advanz™ s615 in the Ford F150
model will be the strongest material originally developed to meet Ford’s demanding 6HS2 specification but
designed for a wide range of commercial applications.
Tailored Solutions for Material Utilization is Ready
15% of gross weight for door structure and 39% of spending
while maintaining the high performance
Enhancing the utilization of materials is a critical consideration as
OEMs develop light-weight automobiles. Inspired by the idea of
welding two steel sheets with variable thickness to reduce material
waste, Novelis began the study of welding technologies for
Body-in-White back in 2012. This technology was certified by
OEMs in 2014 and production has already begun. Obviously, this
significant development helps our OEMs go beyond simply
replacing steel with aluminum in automobiles, but also optimizing
the aluminum in use. A test showed that this technology can help
reduce 15 percent of gross weight for door structures and 39
percent spending, while maintaining high-performance.

Partnering for adhesive bonding technology innovation to address process issues
The innovative bonding technology sets new standard in the global auto industry, bringing added performance
and versatility to the manufacturing process
Novelis has been devoting itself to partnerships with leading companies for industry-wide solutions to develop more
aluminum-intensive vehicles. The long-term agreement between Novelis and Henkel Adhesive Technologies is an
example. Built on a shared commitment to technology innovation, two companies are committed to collaborating on
the development of advanced bonding technologies, without barriers to adoption, for the use of aluminum in
high-volume vehicles.
The first product to launch as a result of this partnership is BONDERITE® M-NT 8453, the latest evolution in aluminum
surface pre-treatments, providing a cost-eective adhesive bonding system for the most demanding vehicle
requirements, including high-strength structural applications. BONDERITE® M-NT 8453 will be made available by
Henkel across the globe, with no licensing or royalty requirements, because Novelis believes that it’s the right way to
ensure long-term success for our industry and our OEM partners. This new system will be applicable in 2016 in our
Changzhou plant.
“China’s drive to build renewable energy vehicles including electric cars will certainly set up a greater-than-forecast
surge in demand for aluminum. As the world's leading supplier of aluminum automotive sheet, Novelis is in
the best position to provide automakers with a wide range of high-quality products and materials, backed by
innovations and metals engineering that are second to none in the aluminum industry and our manufacturing
facilities in all major auto-making continents.
