About Nizamabad District
Nizamabad district is a district of Telangana state with its administrative headquarterslocated at Nizamabad city. The place is named after the governor (of the empire) ofHyderabad State called Nizam and the meaning of the other term “Abad” is 'Long Live'.Nizamabad as a separate came into existence in the year 1956. During the 18th centurythe Deccan region was under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad. In 1724 Nizamabadwas a part of princely State of Hyderabad and until the year 1948 it was continued to bepart of the Nizam's dominions. When India got its independence in 1947, the IndianArmed Forces annexed Hyderabad and through the Operation Polo they put an end tothe rule of the Nizam. The railway line between Secundrabad and Manmad wascompleted in 1905. Moreover, there is a dam which also named after Nizam i.e. NizamSagar Dam, constructed in 1923 across the Manjira River at the village of Achampet inthe Nizamabad district.
Geographically, the district lies at 18°67'N latitude, 78°09'E longitude and 395 m altitude.The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,956 sq km and it is bounded byAdilabad district on the North, Karimnagar district on the East , Medak district on theSouth and Nanded district of Maharashtra and Bidar of Karnataka on the West. Theclimate of the district is characterised as tropical savanna climate with adequate rainfall.The actual rainfall in the district was 953.2 mm in the year of 2015-16.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 revenue divisions namely Bodhan,Kamareddy and Nizamabad. Moreover, it comprises 36 sub-districts, 8 towns and 912villages. There are 2 parliamentary and 9 assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 census the district has population of 25,51,335 persons out of which12,50,641 are males and 13,00,694 are females. The district has sex ratio of 1040(females for every 1000 males). In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in thedistrict was 8.77% including 7.54% are males and 9.97% are females. The major religionsin the district are Hindu and Muslim with 83.23% and 15.35% of the total population. Asper 2001 census the principal languages in the district are Telugu and Urdu with 73.94%and 14.11%.
The economy of the district is equally dependent on both the agricultural and industrialsectors. Since the district has some prominent irrigation projects like Sri Ram Sagar(Pochampahad), Nizam Sagar, Pocharam, etc hence its agriculture has flourished. Morethan half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. Thechief agricultural crops in the district are sugarcane, turmeric, rice, maize, sorghum,pearl millet, and al most all types of vegetables. Industrially also the district is quite welldeveloped. Some of its foremost industries include Nizam Deccan Sugar Ltd., ShakkarNagar, Indur Green power Pvt. Ltd., Nizamabad Corn Products, etc. During the reign ofNizams, there was a sugar factory named Nizam Deccan Sugar Factory which was thebiggest sugar factory in Asia of that period . Every year a huge chunk of revenue comesfrom the industrial sector in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. In 2006the Indian government declared Nizamabad as one of the country's 250 most backwarddistricts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme(BRGF). In the year 2014-2015 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs22,58,500 lakh at current price.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. Itprovides a platform for higher education. Most of the engineering colleges in the districtare affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, located at Hyderabad. Onthe other hand some of its other colleges are affiliated to the Telangana University,located at Dichpally in the district. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is61.25% including 71.47% are males and 51.54% are females.
Taduri Bala Goud, a veteran Indian politician and a member of the 8 th and 9 th Lok Sabhafrom the Nizamabad lok sabha constituency was born on 2 nd October, 1931 at llapuramvillage in the district. He was a member of the Indian National Congress political party.
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from differentparts of the country as well as world. Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is a forest and wildlifesanctuary which extends across 130 sq km between the districts of Nizamabad andMedak . Earlier, the Nizam used it as his favourite hunting place which was later in the20th century declared as a wildlife sanctuary. Alisagar, located at a distance of 10 kmfrom the city of Nizamabad is a park where forest spreads along with the summer house;beautiful gardens, an island and the hilltop guest house make it a perfect tourist’sdestination. Badapahad dargah, one of the oldest dargah in the district was built on thetop of a hillock in the memory of Hazrat Syed Hussaini. Some other notable places ofinterest in the district are Lord Hanuman temple at Sarangapoor, Ashok Sagar,Archaeological and Heritage Museum, Nizamabad Fort and many more.
Nikhat Zareen, an illustrious Indian boxer was born on 14th June, 1996 in the Nizamabaddistrict. She is currently supported by JSW Sport under the Sport Excellence Programme.In the year 2011, she won the gold medal in flyweight division held at the AIBA Women’sJunior and Youth World Boxing Championship in Turkey.
