Impressive Imbrogno Is Reigning Rookie of the Year Afterarecord-settingfreshmancampaign,TheaImbrognobecamethefirststudent-athleteinprogramhistorytowinamajorpostseasonleagueawardastheconferencenamedImbrognotheCHARookieoftheYearatitsannualbanquetlastMarch. Hockey Families CaptainPaigePietrangelo’sfather,FrankPietrangelo,wasasagoalieforthePittsburghPenguinsfrom1987-1992.HeisrememberedinPittsburghforhisclutchperformanceinthe1991StanleyCupPlayoffs.InthesixthgameofthefirstroundagainsttheNewJerseyDevilswiththePenguinsfacingelimination,Pietrangelofacedaone-on-onewithfutureHall-of-FamerPeterStastny.Pietrangelomadearemarkableglovesave,whichisknowntothisdayinPenguinhockeyhistoryas“TheSave”.ThePenguinsendedupwinningGameSix,4-3,toforceaseventhgameinwhichPietrangeloearnedashutoutwin.ThePenguinswentontowintheStanleyCupthatseasonwithPietrangeloearningthewininGameFiveofthefinals. Colontino,whohadservedasassociateheadcoachatMercyhurstsince2006,helpedguideteamstotheNCAATournamentineachofthepastfiveyears,includingearningtwoFrozenFourberths,andhasoveradecadeofwomen’shockeycoachingexperienceattheDivisionIlevel. InColontino’sfiveseasonswithMercyhurst,theLakershavepostedanoverallrecordof148-25-9(.838),advancedtothenationalchampionshipgameonce,made
twoFrozenFourappearances,qualifiedfortheNCAATournamentfivetimes,wererankedNo.1nationallyineachseasonandwonfiveCollegeHockeyAmerica(CHA)tournamentchampionshipsandfiveregular-seasontitles.Immedi-atelyafterColontinoreturnedtoMercyhurstasassociateheadcoach,theLakerswent32-2-3in2006-07,claimingtheprogramrecordforvictories,astheyregisteredanine-winimprovementfromthepreviousseasonandwererankedNo.1nationallyfor13weeks.Afteraone-goallossintheNCAATournamenttotheeventualnationalchampionsendedtheLakers’2007-08season,the2008-09squadreachednewheights.EnteringtheNCAATournamentona15-gamewinningstreak,Mercyhurstadvancedtoitsfirst-everFrozenFourwithavictoryoverSt.LawrenceandproceededtotopMinnesotainathrillingsemifinalcontesttomoveintothenationalchampionshipgameagainstWisconsin.TheLakerswererankedNo.1for23weeksthefollowingseason,went30-3-3andadvancedtotheFrozenFourforthesecondstraightseasonbeforesuccumbinginovertimetoCornell. PriortohismostrecentstretchatMercyhurst,Colontinowasanassistantcoachwiththewomen’steamattheUniversityofNorthDakotaforfouryears.Hehelpedlaunchthewomen’sprogramwiththeFightingSiouxin2002andwaspartofthecoachingstaffthefollowingseasonwhenNorthDakotawon11ofitsfinal12gamestopostawinningrecordinjustitssecondseasonofexistence.SomeofColontino’sresponsibilitieswithNorthDakotaincludedtrainingtheFightingSiouxdefensiveunits,aidingwithvideoanalysisandrecruitingprospectivestudent-athletesalongwithorganizingthestaff’srecruitingefforts.Healsodeveloped,scheduledandorganizedanannualinternationalhockeytournamentatNorthDakota.Duringhistimeonstaff,theFightingSiouxtransitionedintotheWesternCollegiateHockeyAssociation(WCHA)intheirthirdseasonasaprogramandupsetfourth-rankedMinnesotaDuluthontheroadinFebruary2006,thehighest-rankedopponenttheSiouxhaddefeatedinprogramhistorytothatpoint. Colontino,whohasalsobeenaninstructoratnumeroushockeycampsandclinicsthroughoutthecountry,beganhiscoachingcareerasanassistantwithMercyhurstin2000.Heplannedandinstructedthestrengthandconditioningeffortsfortheprogram,coordinatedindividualvideosessionswithstudent-athletes,helpedoverseetheprogram’stravelandequipmentbudgetsandorganizedteamcommunityserviceefforts.InthesecondseasonofhisfirststintwithMercyhurst,theLakerswonathenschool-record24games,includingpostingaperfect8-0-0markinconferenceplay.
