NEWSLETTER9 NOVEMBER 2018 | VOLUME 42 NO. 35 TERM 4 - WEEK 4 - 2018
Salesian Principals visit: Bosco College hosted the Principals and RECs of Australia and the Pacific late last week. We met to discuss Salesian matters and faith formation. We invited them to tour our College, facilities and they also toured the Dunlea Centre. These regular meetings are important for our Salesian Colleges in order to maintain and sustain our common goals and to contribute to the work of Don Bosco, educating the young.
Remembrance Day: On Thursday, the College stopped to honour and pray for all the men and women who have lost their lives in war. The students undertook a Remembrance Ceremony in the assembly yard which emphasised the specific contributions of soldiers and nurses from World War I. It also included artistic presentations by the Art Club led by Mrs Dalton and Miss Miskle, a poem by Isaac Pietrzak and a beautiful song written by Hannah McMahon & accompanied by Lauren Frawley of Year 9. This year there was a sea of poppies on every student which were designed by Mrs Panagio, constructed by Mrs Vicky Trotter (Grandmother to Rhiannon and Kyra Perrett) and Savio 5, and some Year 10 and Year 7 students. The community prayed for the need for peace, tolerance and understanding in our world. Lest We Forget. I thank Mrs Perrett, Ms Halpin and Year 9 Newman class for preparing the solemn ceremony today.
The Teachers' Guild of NSW Award: Congratulations to Ms Allyse Miskle, our Art Teacher, who was one of four finalists for The Teachers' Guild of NSW Award for 'Early Career Educator: Secondary Division Certificate of Excellence.' It is an achievement to be nominated, let alone be a finalist. It is outstanding that Ms Miskle has been recognised for excellence so early in her career. Mrs Rhonda Thompson (Leader of Learning & Teaching) and I were pleased to be there in support of Ms Miskle and she was a deserving recipient of the award. We, at Bosco, are extremely proud of her work and proud of her achievement.
Year 12 Formal: The Formal will be held next Friday evening 16 November, at Doltone House, Sylvania starting at 7pm. This is the last time our senior class will be together as members of the Bosco College community. I look forward to enjoying the final farewells and wishing our Year 12 students all the best with the future.
Rest in Peace: It is with great sadness that we pray for the repose of the soul of Daniel Fabris (Class of 2003) and Emma Byers (Class of 2011) who passed away recently. All members of the College community pray for the family and friends of Daniel and Emma. May they rest in the peace of Christ.
REMEMBRANCE DAYThey shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun
and in the morningWe will remember them.

Remembrance Day
On Thursday of this week, the College gathered to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I; November 11 1918, the day the armistice to end four years of bloodshed was signed and the guns fell silent on the Western Front. We gathered as a community to remember all who have died in war, but especially those who sacrificed themselves in ‘the war to end all wars’.
Young people are sometimes criticised for being self-absorbed, however, throughout our commemoration ceremony the respect shown by our students, your children, was exceptional. They understand the sacrifices that were made, in some cases by young men no older than themselves, and they demonstrated this through their actions. We were proud of them. You would have been too.
Student Health Plans
Due to ongoing illness, allergies or medical conditions, a number of our students require specific medical plans that provide valuable information to the College about the best ways to ensure their ongoing wellbeing. Each year the families of these students are asked to update their children’s health plans to ensure that the College has the most recent diagnoses and suggested treatments. Over the coming two weeks I will be communicating with the families of students with health plans requesting an update of information. If you receive a request for updated information please reply by the end of 2018, so that all student health plans can be finalised prior to school commencing in 2019. If your child does not have a current health plan but you feel they may require one, please contact me at the College so that we can discuss the best way to support your child.

Remembrance Day - A personal contribution to understanding war | Ms Michelle Halpin
Remembrance Day is not a uniquely Australian
commemoration but is a significant day for many
nations across the world as it marks the end of
World War I. Setting some time aside to honour
those who have fallen is an important part of the
acknowledgement of the tragedy of war. However,
the College has made this year’s service unique
and special for our Year 9 History students. As
part of their history assessment last term, students
were asked to create a commemorative piece on a
soldier of their choice to feature in the service. The
College marked this special occasion on Thursday
8 November which featured the works of some of
the amazing commemorative pieces created by our
Year 9 students who were awarded as the first place
recipients of their chosen category. The following
students will receive a certificate and gift card
for their outstanding commemorative
pieces and their contribution to the
Remembrance Day service at the College.

High Tea Excursion | Mrs Melinda Wagner & Mrs Claire Moroney
On Thursday 25 October, Year 10 Food Technology
travelled to Vaucluse House Tea Rooms to take part
in High Tea. The day out at Vaucluse House was an
amazing experience, with a view of the park area nearby,
and lovely food and drinks. We had the chance to try
three different teas: Jasmine, a herbal tea called ‘Gone
Surfing’ and a black Chocolate Caramel Brownie tea.
We had foods including chicken and egg sandwiches,
mini asparagus tarts, decadent mini meringues, scones
with jam and cream, and panna cotta jars all served on
a beautiful tiered platter. The day out at Vaucluse House
was wonderful and definitely helped show us how to
style and prepare for our own high tea assessment.

St John Bosco College is pleased to
announce that the Student Eyecare
Program will be running next year. An
optometrist will be onsite during school
hours to provide students with a free
comprehensive eye examination that is
covered through Medicare Australia. 1
in 6 students have eye conditions that
go undetected. This is due to the high
level of visual demand on their eyes from
books, laptops, tablets and smartphones.
Every student will receive a full report
about their eye health and a prescription
will be provided if glasses are required.
The prescription can be taken to any
optical store to get the glasses made.
A letter has been sent home with your
child with more information. Please fill
out the form and return to the front
office asap.
Don’t miss out
Free Eye Tests Covered through Medicare
Haven’t had your eyes tested in a while? According to the Optometry Association of Australia, every person should get
their eyes checked at least once every two years. Full eye tests will be conducted at St John Bosco College.
At least 1 in every 6 students have vision issues that go undetected. Typical symptoms that go undetected are quick loss of concentration, reading
avoidance, blurry vision, tired eyes and headaches. All students are given a detailed report at the end of their eye tests.
Find out if your child’s eyes are in good condition!

Year 9 Food Technology Students excel at Events Management
As part of the Year 9 Food Technology 'Food for
Celebrations' Unit, students were asked to plan
and present a Celebration Event of their choice.
Once an event was determined, students had to
set up a visual display to reflect the theme with
accompanying decorations, invitation and a party/
favours package. Baking and decorating a celebration
cake to compliment the concept was a highlight of
the activity.
All students worked enthusiastically on this task and
created some amazing displays, supported with high
quality and professional invitations, party favours and
celebration cakes.
Every student is to be congratulated on the effort and
enthusiasm they applied to this activity.
The next challenge for the students is to plan, prepare
and present a sweet food buffet for the Year 10
Social. We are confident the students will amaze us
with their expertise.

BLABThe first round of BLAB words
for the term has been completed.
Congratulations to MacKillop 2 for
levelling up to a red card by gaining
193 teacher signatures. An amazing
effort! MacKillop House is leading the
competition, followed by Chisholm, and
Dunlea and Savio in equal third place.
Congratulations to the following students who received
a $5 canteen voucher: Haylee Massey, Mitchell Bardsley,
Chloe Wood and Rose Bullard.
The BLAB words for weeks 4 and 5 are source, strive,
reflection and, for students in the Newman classes,
advantageous. It would be very beneficial for students
if these words could be displayed in a prominent place
and used at home. Perhaps you could conduct your own
competition!
