Cell Division
DNA Replicates in preparation for cell division
Each new cell needs the same DNA
Cell Division
Mitosis is the reproduction of cells for growth and repair
Meiosis is the production of gametes (sex cells with half the number of chromosomes)
Mitosis in action
Mitosis Meiosis
For growth and repair For producing gametes
One stage of division Two stages of division
Produces two daughter cells
Produces four daughter cells
Daughter cells have same number of chromosomes as parent (diploid)
Daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes of parent (haploid)
Daughter cells have pairs of chromosomes
Daughter cells do not have pairs of chromosomes (only one of each pair)
Mitosis vs Meiosis
