AMRITSAR: No spectators will beallowed on the Indian side of theAttari-Wagah joint checkpost onRepublic Day in view of the Cov-id-19 pandemic, officials familiarwith the matter said on Monday.

A Border Security Force (BSF)official said that a decision is yetto be taken on whether the coor-dinated parade with Pakistanwill be held this year or not.

“Due to the coronavirus pan-demic, no spectator will beallowed to enter the joint checkpost (JCP) at Attari this RepublicDay. But we have yet to decideour programme, including theparade ceremony, to celebratethe day on the border,” said asenior Punjab BSF official,requesting anonymity.

The joint parade was held onIndependence Day last year.

Another BSF official said thatwhile they are yet to receive aprogramme for Republic Day, itis likely that the parade will beheld. Celebrations for the Repub-lic Day may be similar to thebeating the retreat ceremonywhich was held in August with-out any spectators, the officialsaid.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak inMarch last year, only a flag-low-ering ceremony is conducted atsunset on the Indian side of theborder.

NEW DELHI: Flight lieutenantBhawana Kanth will be a part ofthe Republic Day parade thisyear, becoming the first womanfighter pilot to take part inIndia’s biggest ceremonial eventon January 26.

She will be a part of theIndian Air Force’s (IAF’s) tab-leau that will showcase mock-ups of the light combat aircraft,light combat helicopter and the

Sukhoi-30 fighter plane, IndianAir Force officials said on Mon-day.

One of the first three womento get commissioned into theIAF as a fighter pilot, Kanth iscurrently posted at an airbase inRajasthan where she flies theMiG-21 Bison fighter plane.

Kanth, Avani Chaturvedi andMohana Singh were inductedinto the IAF as the first womenfighter pilots in 2016. Tenwomen have been commis-sioned as fighter pilots after an

experimental scheme for theirinduction into the IAF’s combatstream was introduced in 2015.

Kanth, who belongs to Dar-bhanga in Bihar, was born andbrought up in the RefineryTownship, Begusarai, where herfather worked as an engineer inIOCL.

NEW DELHI: The Indian AirForce’s Rafales, Sukhoi-30s andMiG-29s — fighters that are partof its muscular posture in theLadakh theatre — are among the42 aircraft that will take part inthis year’s Republic Day flypast— the highlight of India’s biggestceremonial parade, air force offi-cials said on Monday.

The Rafales, whose inductioninto the IAF began last Septem-ber and is work in progress, aretaking part in the flypast for thefirst time. A woman fighter pilotwill also participate in theparade for the first time.

The IAF’s solitary Rafalesquadron will add more musclewith the arrival of at least threemore fighter jets by the end ofthe month. The delivery of thethree jets will take the number ofRafales in IAF’s inventory to 11.

The IAF’s C-17 Globemaster IIItransport aircraft, C-130J SuperHercules special operationsplane, Apache AH-64E attackhelicopters and CH-47F (I) Chi-nook multi-mission choppers —platforms that have formed partof the force’s role in the Ladakhsector — will also participate inthe flypast, the officials said.

The parade will be shorter,involve fewer participants andonly a fourth of the usual num-ber of spectators will be allowedat Rajpath, with the ceremonialevent being curtailed because ofthe Covid-19 pandemic.

The shortened route of theparade will see it end at NationalStadium instead of Red Fort. Notmore than 25,000 spectators willbe allowed at Rajpath, comparedto at least 100,000 people whousually turn up for the parade.
