NWSTG Re-Architecture

April 8, 2015

NOAA IDP Manager: Luis CanoNOAA IDP NWSTG Re-architecture Project Manager: Kevin Conaty

17

• NWSTG is Nation’s hub (24x7) for collection and distribution of an extensive range of weather data and products (surface observations, models, radar imagery, satellite imagery, buoy data, watches and warnings, and forecasts)– Customers worldwide use data distributed by NWSTG having an impact on a

wide range of economic and emergency management decisions daily

• NWSTG is the Region IV Global Information System Center (GISC)

• Current NWSTG has the following issues– Limited backup capability: 74% backup operational capability that could result in

more than a 90% loss in weather observations and degraded forecast accuracy– Limited capacity and infrastructure: Inadequate capacity to accommodate

projected increases of satellite, model and radar data

NWSTG Overview

18

• NWSTG Re-architecture Project will provide:– 100% backup capability – Accommodate projected increases in satellite (e.g., GOES-R), model, & radar data – Leverage IDP dissemination infrastructure – Private Cloud to re-architect on a

scalable, virtual, reliable and flexible infrastructure

• Re-architecture will encompass fundamental changes to– Hardware footprint– Software design (encompasses more than porting over software to IDP

dissemination infrastructure)– Network infrastructure equipment

• Goal is to transparently de-construct all current NWSTG functionality and transition it to the IDP dissemination infrastructure

NWSTG Re-Architecture Project

19
