As Christians united in common faith, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church exists to nurture
believers and bring the lost to faith in Jesus through God’s Holy Word and Sacraments.
Welcome!
All worshipers are asked to sign the Fellowship Cards during the offering.
These are located in the card holders in the pew.
Restrooms are in the church basement located just at the bottom of the
front stairs. Changing tables are available to parents.
An elevator is available on the north side of the church entrance.
The basement is available to parents needing to quiet small children. The
area is equipped with closed circuit TV.
Hearing assistance devices are also available from the ushers.
Out of respect for all who worship today, please silence all electronic devices.
Those wishing to attend Holy Communion
Lutherans understand Holy Communion as, among other things, a
statement of agreement with the church’s teachings. For this reason, you
will not want to commune with us until you have had a chance to
compare your beliefs with our church’s. Please speak to our pastor about
this before receiving communion with us.

Pentecost 5 July 5th & 6th, 2020
Nation As Christians we live in two kingdoms, the kingdom of God and the kingdom of the state. We
have obligations to both but we need to keep those obligations distinct from each other.
HYMN Christ, by Heavenly Hosts Adored – CW 617
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: ♬ Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS
P: Beloved in the Lord; let us draw near with a true heart and confess our
sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
to grant us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and
that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I
have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I
deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly
sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray;
Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
C: ♬ Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his
only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called
servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: ♬ Amen.
GLORY BE TO GOD
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
C: ♬ Glory be to God on high,
and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.
We praise you, we bless you, we worship you,
we glorify you, we give thanks to you, for your great glory.
O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father almighty.
O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
4
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father;
You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
You take away the sin of the world; receive our prayer.
You sit at the right hand of God the Father; have mercy on us.
For you only are holy, you only are the Lord.
You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: ♬ And also with you.
P: Let us pray.
Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land
that we may be people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to
other nations of the earth. Help us elect trustworthy leaders,
contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and serve you
faithfully in our generation to the honor of your holy name; through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: ♬ Amen.
FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 6:4-7, 17 Make God’s Word part of your life
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home
and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get
up. 17 Be sure to keep the commands of the Lord your God and the
stipulations and decrees he has given you.

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 148 We praise the Lord

SECOND LESSON Romans 13:1-7
Authorities are God’s representatives
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no
authority except that which God has established. The authorities that
exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels
against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and
those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no
terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want
to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and
you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for
your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the
sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring
punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to
the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a
matter of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities
are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to
everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue,
then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
VERSE OF THE DAY
P: Alleluia. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any
people. Alleluia. (Proverbs 14:34)
C: ♬ Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
GOSPEL LESSON & SERMON TEXT Matthew 22:15-22 Living in two kingdoms
C: ♬ Glory be to you, O Lord.
Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,”
they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach
the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by
others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then,
what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?” 18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you
trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They
brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And
whose inscription?” 21 “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So
give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” 22 When
they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

C: ♬ Praise be to you, O Christ.
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures. He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
8
Restore unto me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with your free Spirit. Amen.

P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places
give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or
three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd
his flock till he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on
earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their
glorious song:
C: ♬ Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts;
Heav’n and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he, blessed is he,
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and
when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples,
10
saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this
in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink
from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is
poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you
drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: ♬ Amen.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Grant us your peace. Amen.

In an age of anxiety we still believe that peace comes from Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In an age of confusion we still believe that the Bible is the word of God, inerrant and infallible. In an age of doubt we still believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. In an age of guilt we still believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay for the sins of the world, bringing complete pardon and joy to all believers. In an age of reason we still believe that God is at work in the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. In an age of change we still believe in one unchanging God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Whether you are a first time visitor
or returning guest, we are delighted
to share our worship with you.
Please come back and worship with
us again.
