FACTS ABOUT JOHN PHILIP SOUSA• American Composer and
conductor of the late Romantic era (1820-1910)
• Enlisted in the United States Marine Band from 1868-1875
• From 1880 on, began focusing on conducting and composing “marches”
• Rejoined the USMB in 1880 and served as the director for the next 12 years
• Developed the sousaphone (similar to a tuba)
• Led the “President’s Own” band under the term of 5 presidents (From Rutherford B. Hayes – Benjamin Harrison)
• Nicknamed “The March King” and “The American March King
