Korean Drum Dance Ensemble with
Korean Traditional Dance of Choomnori
Tuesday, August 4, 2015
Preserving the rich heritage of Korean Traditional Dance, KTDOC
provides training in the many traditional dances of the Korean culture.
Some of these dances derive from shamanistic practices, Buddhism,
and from long folk traditions which reflect the emotions of people and
ordinary life. Popular dances often use movement and gestures to tell
traditional tales of the people about grief, joy, faith, the seasons and
the beauties of nature, among other topics. Some of the most popular
include the farmers dance, the monks dance, the fan dance, the
hourglass drum dance and the five drum dance. Today you will see,
among others, a performance of the highly distinctive Drum Dance
in which the dancers simultaneously beat various rhythms/patterns
in a synchronized fashion, choreographing their graceful and stylized
movements as they turn, bend, swirl and connect their drumsticks to the
multiple drumheads. Couple this with the elegant and colorful silk gowns
and the beautifully decorated drum stands and you can understand the
special magic and eye appeal of this wonderful traditional artform.
