The morphing Lamina display system was created as part of a graduate level design competition as a way to display student works this piece combines many functions with a very dynamic aesthetic. The shelf occupies the Roger Williams Architecture Library as a spacial divider which because of the spacing, allows in-teresting views through while displaying architectural models and literature.
Lamina - A thin plate or layer; one layer of a whole. The shelving system morphs from one vertically oriented layer to the next, creating gentle curves with care-fully designed transitions between the angular Lamina edges.

The digital Manufacturing course offered a very in depth look into ways a project can develop from a design idea into a manufactured product with the utilization of certain digital technologies. Whether the exploration was in the form of 2D drafting, 3D computer modeling, laser-cutter fabricating, 3D printing, or CnC milling, the Morphing Lamina project aimed to push the boundaries. from conceptual approach through design evolution to the methods of representation, this student-works display demands attention. Only a fully functional seat, shelf, and display case, but it is a sculp-tural piece of art. In an effort to be able to display 2 dimensional pieces of student work without hurting the design aesthetic, a digital projector is placed within a shelf cavity and projected onto a wall. This is shown in the plan below.

This project was taken all the way up to the 1:1 physical scale model testing stages. The process began by taking the desired programatic intent through a hand sketch development phase and put into a Digital format. Next a small scale laser-cut model evolution occured until the design scheme was ready to be scaled up to the human scale. Next the files were converted in order to be run on the masterCAM tooling software for the CNC-Milling facilities offered at Roger Williams University. Then the first 25 of the 70 total layers were individually milled out of the 1/2 Plywood, sanded, stained & polyurethaned, then assembled with all the necessary spacers using screws and wood glue. The re-sult was a fully functional scale model for the clients review. Able to display many student 3-d Prints, house books, while also functioning as the seating-furnature element that was intended troughout the design process. Below shows some of the process. To the right is the final product.
