Can you think of a talented individual at the Royal Edinburghwho you would like to nominate to be featured in the nextissue of the Mirror? Contact Artlink on ext. 46127 oremail [email protected]
Do you recognize number 17?Its Norrie Sloan, the RoyalEdinburghs OccupationalTherapy Technical Instructorin Woodwork. Norrie hasworked at the Hospital for 26years and for most of that timehis workshop has been locatedon the lower ground level ofthe Andrew Duncan Clinic.
When hes not at work,Norries main pastime is sport,It always has been and stillis. He plays golf at GlencorseGolf Club in Penicuik and playsbadminton at the East LothianBadminton Club That takesup most of my time, he states. His passion for sport startedwhen he was at school.I played everything football, athletics, rugby, basketball andI was always on the rst team.
Greatest sportingachievement? When I was 16 Iplayed on the Scottish NationalBasketball team. We travelledthroughout England, Walesand Ireland and playing forScotland was a highlight.
Worst sporting moment?I took up tennis at school.
I bought a wooden racket asit was the only one I couldafford, and decided to enterthe school championship. Inthe rst round I was up against
the schools reigning championwho was three years olderthan me. Needless to say Igot beaten 6-0, 6-0. I can stillremember his name JamesDougall Ill never forget it.
Sporting hero? That wouldbe Jimmy Conners. I likedhis attitude.
David has been a talented golfer since he was a young child. He rst became interested in the sport when he was six years
old and he began to play when he was eight. He bought a singlesecond-hand club, an old clieke, and rst played at Bruntseld
Links and then at Duddingston Golf Club where he was ajunior member.
When I was eight, my Dad tookme to Muirfeld and I asked JackNicklaus or his autograph. Hesaid no because he was too
busy, but Gary Player gave mehis autograph instead.
In the years following his early introduction to golf, David playedat school and won lots of championships saying that he used tobring other golfers almost to tears, I always used to win and itjust sickened other players to the core.
When David was seventeen he moved away from his home townof Edinburgh to Woking in Surrey to play golf professionally. He did very well in professional championships, winning theSurrey Assistants Championship in 1975 and the East ofScotland Alliance at Mortonhall golf course in 1977. The mostfamous golfer he has ever played with was Sandy Lyle...
I played with him in aqualiying round or the 1975British Open at Carnoustie. Lylemade it through but I didntdespite my best eorts!
When asked if he has a favourite golfer, David cites RoryMcIlroy, the 21 year old from Northern Ireland who has justwon the U.S. Open. Hes incredible and he started at the sameage as me. There have been two important people for David inhis training as a golfer the rst was John Thorne, his boss at
Woking Golf Club, He was a task master but he was fair. He wasalways on to me but in the end I liked him. and especially thegolfer Patrick Tallack, He did everything, he was a professionalat Weybridge, he taught the blind how to golf and he taught allover the world.
As a parting comment David reects upon the recent passing of
the superstar golfer Seve Ballesteros, If more golfers could belike him, it would be a better game.
