A CLOSE CALL.The day of the trial arrived. KarlStrutt-

falsely accused and that the whole affair isa plct to ruin him by his cousin, GeorgeStrutUren, aud Jennie. Smith, the house-maid."

"1know this and am prepared toprove it."George Struttgen regarded the girl in a

startled manner ami his nervousness in-creased as he found himself between two

-known detectives.Stinoon rose lor the defendant."Ifyour Honor please, we are prepared

to confirm the lady's words.""George Struttgen," continued the wit-

ness,' '"has been gambling more heavilythan ever Karl did and using Iliaemploy-er's money. On the evening of the IWd helost over S'IOOO at"—

"How do you kuow this; were you pres-ent V"

A slight ripple followed this question, butthe autwer was whollyunexpected.

"Yes; Iwas present. Iknow what Istate to be facts; others will confirm mywords also. 1 went to the gambling-hall indisguise, purposely to follow George Strutt-geu. Ikept close to his side, saw him latermeet his accomplice, Jennie Smith, audheard much concerning the murder."

At this point the counsel for the defenseordered that George ibtruttgen and JennieSmith be placed under arrest.

"From their conversation Ilearned thatthe sleeve-button had been procured byJennie and placed in her master's bed— thesleeve-button belonging to Karl Struttgenthat was found and produced here as evi-dence of his guilt."

Even the old Judge bent forward andlistened eagerly to her words; the wholecourt-room was full of almost breathlesslisteners.

"The murder was committed by GeorgeStrultsen, and not Karl, as he acknowl-

edged in my presence lohis accomplice, al-though he «a not aware ofmy close prox-

imity."Oilier witnesses were called.George's gambling debts and losses were

proved conclusively, and the terrified house-maid acknowledged all when closely ques-tioued.

George's reason for the murder was thegreat need of money, and he knew himselfto be generously remembered in the will;also a hidden motive that only Isabel Yanounderstood, namely, that he had discoveredher love for his wild cousin, aud his ownlove for herself. .■■■• ■-

Karl had listened inamazement and couldscarcely realize that he was ftee, andthat his Cousin Geurge had fallen into hisown net.

The old Judge grasped his hand and saidheartily:

"I'mrejoiced, my boy, at your good for-tune. Let us hope you will now beginanew.""

God helping me, Iwill,Judge."George was convicted, but eluded the

hangman by a duse of poison, but JennieSmith received ten years in the penitentiaryand served out seven ol them, when deathreleased her.

Earl did begin anew and succeeded won-derfully, aud in the staid business man, thedevoted husband aud lather, no one wouldthink of calling him now the black sheep ofthe family.—lJoston Globe.

In thisileu of vice, a little while ago, the eldestgirl,a child of 13 years, was criminally as-saulted, for which otfeiise her assailant wassent to FoUoni for tan years by the SuperiorCourt.

COLD STATISTICS.Dr. J£aston*s Flock Listens to Figures on

H Variety of Subjects.George A. Moore, President of the Pacific

Mutual .Life Insurance Company, occupiedDr. Easton's pulpit at the Calvary Presby-terian Church last evening and read avoluminous statistical paper, covering atleast a dozen different subjects.

The de-.ultoriness of the document wassomewhat remarkable, the reader swingingin a not over methodical manner, from thenumber of deaths by famine since tbetime of Abraham to the number of saloonsin han Francisco.

Another bound was from the Dumber ofmen killed auriue the late war to the num-ber of persons committed to insane asylumsin the State of Maine for tho year endingDecember 31, 1890,

Mr. Moore's table also showed that 60,000men die annually from alcohol, and that the

umber of deaths from this) source aregreater than from war, pestilence autifamine combined.

At the conclusion of the lecture L- L.Abbott addressed the congregation on tem-perance, and strongly recommended theorganization of the Gospel TemperanceUnion for Calvary Church.

His views were ably indorsed by Dr.Easton, the

~pastor, and* a union was

organized with the following officers: Presi-dent, George C. Turner: Vice-I'residotit,Mrs. M. A. Armstrong; Secretary, W. It.Thomson; Treasurer, Benjamin Komaino.
