MOOCs: How did it work for us? Case study LACE - A MOOC on Literature and Change in Europe

LACE Network
LACE is a university network
between:
• Aarhus (Denmark)
• Bologna (Italy)
• Granada (Spain)
• Groningen (The Netherlands)
• Leuven (Belgium)
• Lisbon (Portugal)
• Tartu (Estonia)
Important aspects
• MOOC was targeted at MA level, sufficient mastery of English + one other European Language was recommended
• We will produce follow-on, also Spanish Language MOOCs
• MOOC replaced a planned Erasmus Mundus bid
• Our MOOC is a stepping stone towards an Erasmus Strategic Partnership (in Erasmus+ call)
• LACE = 6 ECTS : 180 study hours!
MOOC
• Open <> Moodle was only for on-campus students
• In parallell with on-campus students at the 7 partner universities
• Follows semester planning
• Mixes registered students with MOOC-only students
• Certificate of accomplishment if all assignments + quizzes made
• Credit if additional paper is submitted + registration at a partner university

• Clarity on Learning goals and outcomes• Classical college lectures & reading• Peer interactivity in forum discussions• Quizzes to:
o Monitor course participationo Stimulate understanding of weblectures

Results• Previous years: about 15-20 students on Moodle
• MOOC: about 400 student registrations in total, about 75 were full participants
• 22 on-campus students got the credit
• Only 13 others applied for the Certificate of Accomplishment
• The MOOC students were the most active and enriched the course experience for the on-campus students
• We reached students from Latin-American and Central European countries
• 3 MOOC students registered since to MA or PhD programmes at our university
