KEYNOTE LECTURERS
Dr. Fernando BELLO Fernando Bello received a PhD in Biomedical Systems from Imperial College London in 1996. After finishing his PhD he worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Guy's Hospital and at the University of Kent where he was appointed as a lecturer in the Electronic Engineering Department in 1998. In September 2000 he joined the Department of Biosurgery and Surgical Technology at Imperial College
London, where he is currently a Senior Lecturer in Surgical Graphics & Computing. His main research interests are in medical visualisation and analysis, medical virtual environments and haptic interaction. A significant proportion of his work is devoted to investigating and promoting the use of new technologies in medical education and clinical practice.
Dr. Paolo FIORINI Paolo Fiorini, received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Padova, (Italy), the MSEE from the University of California at Irvine (USA), and the Ph.D. in ME from UCLA (USA). From 1985 to 2000, he was with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, where he worked on telerobotic and teleoperated systems for space exploration. Since 2000
he is an Associate Professor of Control Systems at the School of Science of the University of Verona (Italy) where he founded the ALTAIR robotics laboratory. His research focuses on teleoperation for surgical applications, service and exploration robotics.
Dr. Joerg RACZKOWSKY Jörg Raczkowsky studied Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and obtained his Diploma Degree in 1981. He received his Doctoral Degree in Informatics in 1989. Since 1990, he holds a tenure position at the Institute for Process Control and Robotics (IPR), University of Karlsruhe (TH). Currently, he is head of the Medical Robotics Group of IPR (MeGI). His field of research covers the complete process
chain from imaging over image processing, surgical planning, simulation, surgical robot systems and augmented reality.

INVITED SPEAKERS
Eng. Tim CLIJMANS After receiving a Master of Engineering in 2004, Tim Clijmans has been a PhD-researcher at the division ofBiomechanics and Engineering Designof the University of Leuven (Belgium). His current research interests include
computer aided pre-operative planning and simulation ofcraniosynostosis and mandibular reconstruction surgery.Simultaneously, he obtained a specialization in CAD/CAM(Univ. of Twente), a post-graduate of Business Studies(Leuven School of Business and Economics) and a Masterof Medical Imaging (Univ. of Leuven). He is (co-) author of 14 scientific papers and received several prizes for his PhD-research.
Prof. Borut GERSAK Borut Gersak, medical doctor, is head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Medical Center Ljubljana (Slovenia). With hisgroup, he doing all types of classic and modern operations, including beating
heart valve surgery, beating heart coronary surgery, endoscopic cardiac surgery, measurements of electrical signals during cardiac surgery, enzymatic studies, cardiac transplantation programme and pediatric cardiac surgery. Within the ARISER project, he is leader of the clinical focus group workpackage.
Dr. Francesco CONVERSANO After receiving his MSc degree inmaterials engineering in 2003, FrancescoConversano has been working at ISBEMand IFC-CNR Lecce in the developmentof new ultrasound-based diagnostictechniques. He has got the PhD in
Bioengineering at the University of Pisa, with a thesis onacoustic characterization of ultrasound contrast agentsfor advanced biomedical imaging. His current researchinterests include non-invasive tissue characterization andinnovative strategies for ultrasound molecular imaging. He is Research Scientist at IFC-CNR Lecce.
Mr. Cyrille LE TERRIEN Cyrille Le Terrien graduated in biomedical engineering from the university Paul Sabatier in Toulouse in 1996. After a Military Service in the neurosurgery department at Val de Grace Hospital in Paris, he joined Carl Zeiss GmbH as an
application engineer in Image Guided Surgery (1997). Cyrille took a new position at Medtronic as a Sales and Technical representative 2002 in Switzerland and has been working as an European product manager in Cranial neurosurgery, ENT and intra operative imaging fields since 2003. His principal activities today are concentrating on Upstream (market trends feedback) & downstream marketing (strategies) and Commercialization.
Dr. Luca CUCURACHI Luca Cucurachi is Professor of History ofModern and Contemporary Philosophy at the High Institute of Religious Sciences-Theological Faculty of Puglia-Lecce. After his degree in Philosophy, he obtained a Ph.D. in Bioethical-Juridical Sciencesat the University of Lecce. Actually, he’s
attending his second Ph.D. in Ethics and Anthropology, at the same University. After a Master in Bioethics at theUniversity of Rome “La Sapienza”, he participated also ininternational events and courses, such as the European Academy of Bioethics (Germany). His fields of interest are:bioethics of genetics and biomedical research, andrelationships among science, philosophy and ethic.
Prof. Michele MAFFIA Michele Maffia is graduated in Biological Sciences (1984) and holds a PhD degree in Physiology (1989). He has been associated professor of Physiology since 2001 at the department of Biological and Environmental Science and Technology, University of Salento (Italy). His
research interests are gastroenterology and transport systems for nutrients and ions of teleosts, as well as functional and structural analysis of proteins transporters. He has been participating in the National Research Program in the Antarctic since 1989.
Prof. Dr Huib DE RIDDER Huib de Ridder is full professor ofInformational Ergonomics in the Facultyof Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He holds a MSc degree in Psychology and a PhD degree. In 1998he initiated the research program on
Product Intelligence in particular the subprogramTransparent Interfaces. He is vice-director of the Delft ICTResearch Center and involved in research on ambientintelligence and wireless communication. Current researchtopics include trust in Peer-to-Peer networks. Within the IDE Medisign program his current contribution to theresearch project called “Surgeon’s cockpit” is thesupervision of three PhD students.
Judith MUEHL Judith Muehl was born in 1971 in Mainz, Germany. She currently works as senior researcher at Graz University of Technology, Austria since January 2006. Her research interests include visualization and interaction techniques in
virtual and augmented reality, physically based simulation, as well as medical computer science. She studied at the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. She holds two Master's Degrees, one in Physics and one in Computer Science (Dipl.-Phys. and Dipl.-Inform.), both from TU Darmstadt.
Dr. Antonio MALVASI Antonio Malvasi is graduated in Medicineat the University of Bari and got hisspecialization in Obstetrics andGynaecology in 1987. He has been employed as assistant surgeon and thenas Director of Reproductive Center,
Santa Maria Hospital, Bari, Italy. Recently he has beenappointed Director of anatomic drawing at the Faculty ofMedicine of the University La Sapienza in Rome. He has published more than 128 research papers, 2 text-books and has been invited speaker in several meetings. He has been a NESA member since the year 2005.
Eng. Umberto PASQUALI Umberto Pasquali holds a degree in engineering from Politectico di Milano and a Master in Business Administration from INSEAD. He worked as a Geotechnical Engineer and then joined McKinsey & Co, a Management
Consulting firm, where he spent 6 years advising companies on strategy, organization and marketing issues. In 2004 Umberto joined Sorin Group, the largest European Cardiovascular Medical Device company as Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development. In 2007 Umberto was appointed Director, Innovation Portfolio Planning and R&D funding. Within this last assignment he is also responsible for Sorin’s minimally invasive program in the Heart Valve space.
Dr. Robert McLAUGHLIN Robert McLaughlin leads research inimage processing of Optical CoherenceTomography at the Optical+BiomedicalEngineering Laboratory at the University of Western Australia. His currentresearch is focused on imaging of
cancerous cells in breast surgery applications and imagingof the upper airway for obstructive sleep apnoea.Previously, he has been both a research scientist with Siemens Molecular Imaging, and held various commercialpositions in industry. From 1999-2002, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford.
Dr. Sonia PUJOL Sonia Pujol is an Instructor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on computer-assisted surgical navigation for endovascular therapy. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Université Joseph
Fourier, Grenoble, France. Sonia Pujol joined the Surgical Planning Laboratory in the Department of Radiology, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, in 2004. She teaches neuroimaging analysis within the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing, and she is a lecturer in computer-assisted surgery at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. David MISHALY David Mishaly graduated from the Hebrewuniversity medical school in JerusalemIsrael 1989. Became specialized incardiothoracic surgeon in 1996. Hespent his fellowship in pediatric cardiacsurgery in the Cleveland clinic (Dr. RBB
Mee) and in UCSF San-Francisco (Dr. Frank Hanley). On1999 he became the head of pediatric and congenitalcardiac surgery in the largest hospital in Israel (ShebaMedical Center). In the last year he renew the congenitalcardiac surgery service in Ljubljana University Medical Center in Slovenia. He has become worldwide pioneers inusing minimally invasive techniques in congenital cardiacsurgery, as well as other innovative technique in the fronttechnology.
Dr. Marco SOLINAS Marco Solinas graduated magna cum laude in 1994 at the Faculty of Medicine -University of Bologna. In 1999 he specialized magna cum laude in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Bologna. He spent part of his training at the St
Antonius Ziekenhuis in Netherlands and at the Columbia University (USA). Since 2000 he has been working at the Heart Hospital, Fondazione G. Monasterio, Massa (Italy). His principal interest is developing new minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques and strategies.
Prof. Giuseppe NICOLARDI Giuseppe Nicolardi got a Medical degree with honours in 1982 and obtained theSpecialization in Neurology with honoursfrom University of Bari Medical School in1986. He became associate professor ofHuman Anatomy at University of Lecce
in 1992 and took the position of Chief of the Laboratory of Human Anatomy at the Department of Biological andEnvironmental Sciences and Technologies. His mainresearch topics are in the physiopathology ofneurodegenerative disorders and sleep respiratorydisturbances.
Prof. Michael STARK Michael Stark was for many years medical director at the Misgav Ladach hospital in Jerusalem, where he initiated and developed the “Misgav Ladach” caesarean section method and the so called Ten Step Vaginal Hysterectomy.
He is now the president of the New European Surgical Academy. NESA deals with the analysis and evaluation of existing surgical procedures and their ways of performance and created the first European based working group on Natural Orifice Surgery. Michael Stark is also the chairman of the gynaecological departments of the HELIOS hospital group. With 55 hospitals in Germany and the Czech Republic with a capacity of 15,700 beds, this is one of the most important hospital groups in Europe.
