Highlighting the Bengals

Coach Charles Jackson’s Corner

* How long have you been coaching for Metro?

10 years and I enjoy it. Coaching is something that I’ve always done every since I grew up in Mississippi coaching softball.

* What is the most fulfi lling thing about coaching the Bengals?

I enjoy watching the kids progress and watching them succeed while making sure that they have good grades in school. And, with me as their coach, they have another male fi gure to talk to, to ask ques-tions and someone they can depend on. I also enjoy watching kids play on Friday nights in High Schools and moving on to college.

* What are your prospects for the season?

To make it to the Super Bowl! My varsity team is most likely to succeed but my junior varsity and pee-wee teams are much younger, so we’re going to work with them and be patient since we’re in a transition mode.

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

My defense and the speed of all my teams.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

My running backs on varsity are twins and they’ve been with us for six years and they have experience and they’re good. Also, the quarterback on my pee-wee team is back from last season and he’s a nice runner. He’s been scoring touch-downs for us this season.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

Our offense must get better, then we can win.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

Metro is one of the best organizations that I’ve been a part of and I’ve been all over in a lot of states and this one’s the best. Join early, it’s a great step forward in being part of an organization. Learning how to be a part of an organization and how to be a team player is a good step in life.

Coach Alex Brookshire’s Corner

* How long have you been coaching for Metro?

I’ve been coaching for Metro for five years now and I become a coach because I wanted to give back since I use to play with Metro Football growing up. It’s very rewarding for me everyday when I see them getting better and learning, it’s a good feeling.

* What is the most fulfilling thing about coaching your Metro team?

The see the respect and the disciple that’s being installed within them by how they treat one another, the coaches and

adults. And, to see the smile on the kids faces because that makes me feel good knowing that they’re enjoying themselves.

* What are your prospects for the season?

We should have a good record of wins and we’re most definitely going to get to the playoffs for the chance at the Super Bowl.

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

Being discipline and we’re teaching them this. We’re not really dominate this year but we’re good.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

Yes, on offense, No. 19 and No. 22; defense, No. 22, No. 52 and 60 because they’re great and get to the ball really well and they’re all very coachable kids.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

Confidence! We’ve got to get them over the hump of dropping their heads and going down because somebody scored a touchdown and so I’m building up that confidence.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

No matter what you hear, Metro is a great organization and playing Metro Football is going to get you ready for middle school, high school and to the next level, as for as discipline and the under-standing of the game. And, you need to work hard at whatever you do. Whether it’s football, baseball or whatever it is and you must stay focused and work hard.

Hightlighting the Chargers/Aggies

Coach Wade Raines Sr.’s Corner

* How long have you been coaching for Metro Youth Sports?

For five years and two of those years as a head coach. I grew up in Metro. My mother and father were volunteers for 30 years. My father, Walter Raines, was a coach and my mother No-vella was a board member and a volunteer who took care of our necessities. I also had an aunt that was involved in Metro. As a child in Metro Youth Sports, I played football and basketball from the age of nine to 12.

* What is the most fulfilling thing about coaching your team?

That we are role models, father figures, in partnership with their families and we share in-formation with these young men so they can do good work at home, at school and on the field. I enjoy watching them get better and better while improving everyday.

* What are your prospects for the season? That they’ll be outstanding young men and

I hope that the Charger family will be there to support them in the Super Bowl, like they do every year. We have 10 coaches now who are assisting and providing the leadership to the teams and we want them to have fun, enjoy the game and learn.

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

Constructing and demonstrating football techniques for my teams, while working with their teachers and making sure they’re help-ing to build character--as well as making sure they’re achieving and excelling in school and on the field.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

I’m satisfied now that I’m a head coach at Metro because I’m following in the footsteps of my father and I’d also like to highlight my mom because she used to bring me to practice and to the games.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

Practice and to understand that we as coaches communicate with them on working hard and following directions when they are given plays.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

I want them to work at being an outstanding person and to work at achieving greatness. Re-spect your parents and coaches and respect who they are and it will be done by participating in our Charger family. Football is a great game and can take you anywhere you want to go in life, as long as, you work hard and dedicate yourself.

Highlighting the Colts/Bulldawgs

Coach Courtney Davis’ Corner* How long have you been coaching for

Metro? This is my second year but my first year of

being the Head Coach of the Colts and I like it a lot. I became a coach because I use to play football and my former coaches were some of my mentors and I love the game. So since I love the game, I thought that coaching would be the way to get that excitement that I missed from playing and also, so I could be a mentor to the kids that I coach.

* What is the most fulfilling thing about coaching The Colts/Bulldawgs?

I’m having a good time meeting the new players and getting to know them. We’re sort of starting over from point A. Basically, we’re building the program because we got a lot of new players and I enjoy watching them grow each day.

* What are your prospects for the season? We’re rebuilt but we’re still going to get out

there, try to win every game, we’re going to play hard and give it our best. If we win we win, if we lose we lose but as long as we learn

from it, it’s going to get better and better each week.

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

We have a lot of good running backs from each level.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

My quarterback because he’s really good. He’s an all around player and he’s a good leader, he can run fast and he can throw and he does everything that I ask him to do.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

We have to have everybody on the same page and getting better each week. Then when the playoffs come, to play our best football and play hard, then we got a chance.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

Essentially, football teaches you to become more of a man so to speak. It’s a hard sport and it teaches you adversity. This sport will help you, not just today but in the long run with your life.

Highlighting the Cowboys

Coach Jason Robinson’s corner

* How long have you been coaching for Metro?

Seven years.

* What is the most fulfi ll-ing thing about coaching the Cowboys?

The relations you build with the parents and kids because it’s not about the winning or losing. These are kids that we’ll probably interact with for the rest of their lives and we’ll follow them on to college and hopefully the pro’s or whatever else they do.

* What are your prospects for the season?

I think we can win on all three levels because we have the personnel, whether or not

we do, we’ll see.

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

I’d say experience. We’ve got a lot of children back, we got a group that won the Super Bowl and split across two levels. Our varsity got a lot of kids that have played some pretty good games throughout their career and we got a lot of their little brothers of the older kids on the pee-wee team, so we’re fortunate to have that.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

Our line on our junior varsity has a lot of kids that have been here for a long time and, as far as, the pee-wee team I think this may be the best pee-wee team we’ve ever had.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

The same answer as above

and yes, we’re going to win the Super Bowl!

* Are there any encourag-ing words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

There are a lot of good coaches out here, a lot of good people and a lot of good orga-nizations have partnered with us. So I think for kids at this age, they’re able to learn how to be in front of big crowds and handle themselves in front of multiple adults at one time, which I think is an asset. We’re going to have a lot of kids that are going to be star from every team. And, going forward, they’ll know how to handle the bigger crowds, the com-petition, having to deal with schedules and all those kind of things. So it prepares every-body for what they’re going to do in the future.

* How long have you been coaching for Metro?

This is my 14th season and I became a coach because a friend of mine, who was coaching at the time, needed some help so I helped him and I’ve been here ever since.

* What is the most fulfi lling thing about coaching The Eagles/Spartans?

Working with the kids, so they can learn

the sport and I see a good change in them because they’re being disciplined and they must work hard in school. We also teach them to apply what they learn here to life.

* What are your prospects for the season?

To win the Super Bowl!

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

I have a lot of returning players, so we have a lot of experience on our varsity and junior varsity teams.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

I’m very pleased with my running backs on varsity, my line men with junior varsity

and my pee-wee.* What do you think it will take for

your team to win the Super Bowl?We got to keep working hard and get

better with every practice.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

If you’re interested in anything in life you’ve just got to work hard at it. Metro is a great organization and just like any organization we can get better and we’re working towards that every day.

Highlighting the Lions

Coach Jemal Cooper’s Corner

* How long have you been coaching for Metro?

For 14 years and I love it. I used to play Metro Football when I was younger, I played for the Rams. I became a coach after I attended the Metro games back in 1997 through 2000 and when 2001 came along the time. Because I wanted to be a part of Metro to make a difference, since there were kids in the innercity that needed to be guided.

* What is the most fulfi lling thing about coaching your Metro team?

I see kids getting an education, going through high school, graduating, getting scholarships to college, if they’re really talented and to know that they all started with Metro makes me feels pretty good. And, to see a kid that’s 20 or 21 years old, and they still say, “Hey, coach!” Some even scream my name a half block away and that feels good and it makes me very proud.

* What are your prospects for the season?

To win the Super Bowl!

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

My up front line on all my teams.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

My offensive heads No. 1, No. 6, No. 11, No. 33 and No. 75 because it starts with them and it’s going to end with them. They are the heart and soul of the team.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

Discipline and paying attention to the coaches.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

For any kid that wants to play for Metro, we are all one big family no matter what team you play for. So win or lose, you’re a winner and it will be a lifetime experience and you’ll make some lifetime friends.

Highlighting the Raiders

Coach Charlie Williams’ Corner

* How long have you been coaching for Metro?

For 39 years. I got into coaching with Darnell Hollins with PAL for about two years back in 1966 and after that, I’ve been with Metro ever since. I coach be-cause I enjoy the kids and a lot of kids can be reached and some of them can’t but I think the good outweighs the bad.

* What is the most fulfi lling thing about coaching The Raiders/Red Raid-ers?

To see a kid develop higher living standards to make something out of them-selves

* What are your prospects for the season?

I think we’re going to have a good sea-son, because when you’ve been coaching, as long as I have, you get to understand kids attitudes and whether it’s good or bad, you’ll know. Their attitudes are go-ing to refl ect on it the whole season and they’re looking real good. There’s some more work to be done but we can always

get that done.

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

The attitudes of the kids, how they prac-tice and what they get out of it.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

My defensive line and defensive backs are very good. My defense is good period with all of my teams but we got to get bet-ter on the offensive side of the ball.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

My varsity team needs to keep playing the same way they’re playing and they’ll win.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

To the kids that have not had the op-portunity yet to be in Metro, Metro is good but it’s community and it’s very good for our community. Football is not the same thing as getting an understand-ing of what’s going on through life and with education, comes more. If these kids can do these things and learn that they are somebody, then they will be somebody in life.

Highlighting the Rams/Tigers

Coach Tom Macon’s Corner* How long have you been coaching

for Metro? I’m one of the original founders, so for

40 years. I started coaching to give some-thing back to the community. I was 19 years old when I started coaching back in Alabama. We lived right across the street from a park and some of the kids would play football and I thought that I should be the person to coach them because the kids around the neighborhood kind of looked up to me and I’ve been coaching every since.

2.) What is the most fulfilling thing about coaching your Metro team?

I enjoy being their mentor, watching them grow and helping them. That’s what I’m here for and, I do the best that I can, to see that they progress as they go along.

* What are your prospects for the season?

To win the Super Bowl! When we walk out there the first thing the kids learn is, “Who are we? We’re the Rams. What are we? Number One. Super Bowl, Super Bowl Champs!” We go through the whole field saying that and everyone is fortunate and blessed.

* What do you think are your biggest

strengths this season? They’re playing the game smart at all

times. Every year I tell my kids that they must be mentally prepared because play-ing the game smart is what gets you over, since football can be very physical.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

What’s amazing to me is that, I have a couple of undersized running backs named Jayshawn Underwood and Devon-te Pollard and they both weigh less than 100 lbs. They’re12 years old and it amaz-es me, of how these young men stand up to the challenge weekend and week out. It’s very encouraging to me, to know little guys like that, have a heart just as big as a 240 lb man.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

Put your heart in it, put your mind in it and play smart, you can’t go wrong.

* Are there any encouraging words you’d like to say to your team or to other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

Thank GOD that you’re blessed to have the people over here doing this because it’s a job that needs to be done in the community. Thank GOD that you have all of these young, black men trying to make sure that they get turned in the right direction.

Highlighting the Titans/TarheelsCoach Larry

Tabron’s Corner* How long have you been

coaching for Metro? For 19 years. I started coach-

ing when I was 19 or 20 years old and I became a coach because I always had a thing for working with kids. I didn’t have a father around while I was growing up, so it made me want to be more of a role model to others. Then, when I had my own children and having them out there too, that was our thing and I haven’t stopped yet, I enjoy it.

* What is the most fulfi ll-ing thing about coaching the Titans?

I like watching the kids become student athletes and seeing them years from now, playing high school ball and going to college. And, when they see me, it makes me feel good that they still call me coach.

* What are your prospects for the season?

We plan on going to the Super Bowl!

* What do you think are your biggest strengths this season?

My Linemen because they’re the backbone since they pro-vide the block for my running backs and quarterback. With-out them setting the blocks, we wouldn’t get any yards.

* Are there any positions you’d like to highlight?

The whole team is good and, as long as they perform like they’re supposed to we’ll win the games.

* What do you think it will take for your team to win the Super Bowl?

Hard work, practice and a positive attitude.

* Are there any encourag-ing words you’d like to say to your team or other children who might be interested in playing for Metro?

Metro is a good organization because we teach the kids a lot about the sport, we teach them discipline and make sure they keep up your grades. I recom-mend Metro Youth Sports at least until kids get to the eighth grade or higher school.
