CARPE DIEM
To seize the day. To grasp the opportunity. To embrace the whole of life. Let these words be your inspiration for
personal growth and professional development. Let them guide and fire your imperatives. Let them underline the
vigor and enterprise necessary to achieve great victories. Capture the essence of living the full life. Engage the
day. This is, indeed, the moment. The opportunity may not come again. Besiege the occasion, wage war upon it. For it is the resolute of mind who receive the greatest achievement and the highest fulfillment and reward. Be
vigilant and diligent. The genius of life and secret to success is to capture each precious opportunity. For to seize the
moment personally is the essence of living a full life — the kind so many desire and so few know how to achieve.

The origins of academic dress date to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form. The ordinary dress of the scholar, whether student or teacher, was the dress of a cleric. In the days of Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge universities first began prescribing a definite academic dress.
In American colleges and universities, the academic costume is prescribed by the American Council of Education, and its present form was adopted in 1932. The first suggestion for a uniform code was made in 1895, when an Intercollegiate Commission met at Columbia University and adopted a code of academic dress. The code regulated the cut and style and materials of the gowns and prescribed the colors which were to represent the different fields of learning.
Gowns: Those earning bachelor’s degrees wear black gowns with long, pointed sleeves. Those receiving master’s degrees wear black gowns with long closed sleeves (with slits for the arms). Those holding doctorates wear gowns with bell-shaped open sleeves. Many doctoral robes are also black, but some schools use robes in the school’s colors. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are not trimmed, but doctoral gowns are faced down the front with black velvet and have three bars of velvet across the sleeves.
Hoods: All hoods are black and are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university that conferred the highest degree. For today’s graduates, the kelly green and white on the hood denote Mercyhurst University. The master’s degree hoods are three and one-half feet long and closed at the end and are edged with three inches of velvet. The doctoral hoods worn by many of the faculty are four feet long with panels at the sides and five-inch velvet edging. The color of the velvet hood trimming reflects the subject field in which the degree was earned.
Caps: Caps are black and stiffened into the so-called mortarboard style. Each cap has a long tassel fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap. Bachelor’s degree candidates traditionally enter the ceremony with the tassel hanging to the right side, and move it to the left after receiving their degrees. For doctoral and master’s degree students, the tassel begins and remains on the left.

Erie native Christine Spadafor is an accomplished executive whose extensive career experience ranges from corporate board rooms to nonprofits. She is CEO of SpadaforClay Group, a management consulting and board advisory firm. In addition, she is an Independent Director of a New York Stock Exchange-publicly traded company and advisor to numerous nonprofit organizations.
As a child growing up in Millcreek, Ms. Spadafor learned from her supportive and devoted parents, Arthur and Mary Spadafor, about the joy, duty and responsibility of “giving back.” She has built her career bridging the corporate and nonprofit worlds and will address graduates on the challenges of balancing external success with the internal rewards of purpose, meaning, and social contributions.
“While Erie has endured challenging times, it still maintains its vibrancy and spirit: the civic, economic and technical reinvention, the expansion of educational institutions like Mercyhurst University and the nonprofit innovations demonstrated by organizations such as The Erie Community Foundation. I am proud to be from such a strong, caring and resilient community,” Ms. Spadafor said.
Ms. Spadafor received a law degree from Harvard Law School and Master of Science degree from Harvard School of Public Health. In addition, she holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition of her career achievements and contributions to vulnerable and at-risk populations.
Ms. Spadafor was recognized by the American Bar Association as one of the nation’s top 20 female attorneys with business expertise for boards of directors. She is a member of DirectWomen, a national nonprofit that works to increase the representation of women lawyers on corporate boards.
Ms. Spadafor was an Intensive Care Unit nurse at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a former General Counsel and Vice President at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Boston. She was also a partner at The Boston Consulting Group and other leading management consulting firms, and twice served as advisor to the United Nations in China on environmental and maternal and child health matters in third world countries.
Ms. Spadafor is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars – lecturing on board governance, leadership, and issues central to gender equity. She is a Visiting Executive in the MBA program at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, a lecturer at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Business School, Young Presidents Organization (YPO), University of Nevada and at international leadership conferences sponsored by Harvard Medical School.

Mother Frances Xavier Warde was the pioneer who led the first Sisters of Mercy to America more than 175 years ago. Young and decisive, she turned away from Dublin’s social life to teach poor children at the House of Mercy before becoming one of the first Sisters of Mercy, professing her vows in the new Institute of the Sisters of Mercy in 1833. As a protégé of Catherine McAuley, Frances co-founded the first community at Carlow and several others outside Dublin.
When the Diocese of Pittsburgh was founded in 1843, Bishop Michael O’Connor called for the Sisters of Mercy to minister to the area’s Catholic immigrant population. Frances led a team of six other young sisters who set sail for America to open a whole new world to the Mercy ministries. They visited the sick and prisoners, provided religious instruction for both children and adults, opened schools, cared for children at St. Paul’s Orphan Asylum, and founded Mercy Hospital, the first hospital in Pittsburgh and the first Mercy hospital in the world.
Frances went on to help found Mercy communities in Chicago, in New England and along the eastern coast. She founded more than 100 convents, schools, hospitals and other social works throughout Ireland and the United States, more than any other Sister of Mercy in history. Her biographer, Kathleen Healy, has said that, “It is probable that no woman has lived to whom the Church in the United States owes more than it does to her.”
Mercyhurst’s freshman residence hall is named in her honor.
Sister Patricia Flynn, RSM, is accepting the honorary degree on behalf of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
As Sister M. Eustace Taylor said, “Mercyhurst College lived first in the desire and will of a remarkable woman – Mother M. Borgia Egan.” A commitment to excellence marked her entire career.
Described as “a born educator,” she wanted to ensure that schools of the Sisters of Mercy excelled. Her efforts resulted in St. Joseph Academy, her Titusville school, becoming the first parochial school in the state to be accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction in 1915.
She was elected Mother Superior by the Sisters of Mercy of Crawford and Erie Counties in 1918, and she was at the helm as the Sisters moved to Erie to relocate their high school and build a college for young women.
Not only did Mother Borgia take the risks involved with securing investments to build the beautiful Mercyhurst campus; she had the foresight to send Sisters to prestigious institutions to earn the degrees to build a top-notch faculty before Mercyhurst opened in 1926. Mother Borgia’s tireless work enabled Mercyhurst to receive its charter from the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 1928 and its Middle States accreditation in 1931.
Though her term as ex officio president of the college lasted just a year, she remained the school’s guiding spirit and chief administrator for the next 30 years, serving as academic dean until her health failed. She died in 1962 at the age of 84.
The original residence hall adjacent to Old Main was renamed Egan Hall in her honor in 1958.
Peggy Dudarchik, the granddaughter of Mother Borgia’s brother, Daniel, is accepting the honorary degree of behalf of her great-aunt.

Teaching Excellence Award James A. Snyder, Ph.D.
Calling him a “teacher in the model of the best,” Mercyhurst University has chosen Philosophy Department Chair James Snyder, Ph.D., as the 2019 recipient of its Teaching Excellence Award.
“A long-serving Philosophy professor at Mercyhurst, Dr. Snyder is an excellent professor and scholar,” said Christina Riley Brown, Ph.D., dean of the Hafenmaier College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. “He has a sustained commitment to teaching classics in a manner designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and values to promote a quality of life that is individually enriching and socially beneficial.”
In addition to his creative and engaging manner of teaching, Snyder’s colleagues say his productivity knows no bounds. He teaches and has created courses for both the liberal arts core curriculum and philosophy major, not to mention tutorials, interdisciplinary classes, Honors classes, and courses designed for Faculty-led Study Abroad Trips.
Snyder has contributed to a vast range of publications and presentations during his Mercyhurst career, which began in 2001. This summer, he will attend a prestigious Council of Independent Colleges seminar on the Ancient Greek Hero at Harvard University’s Center for Hellenistic Studies, which is designed to increase and expand student engagement with the literature of ancient Greece.
A Pittsburgh native, Snyder earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Slippery Rock University, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in Philosophy from Duquesne University. He also studied in Belgium where he met his wife, Harriet Victor, a native of Sweden, who was studying there as well. He is fluent in several languages and enjoys traveling, gardening, and, most importantly, his family. He and Harriet have two sons, August, a Mercyhurst student, and Orion.
James A. Snyder, Ph.D.Associate Professor of Philosophy

Mission of Mercyhurst University
Lyrics by Gary Myers Music by Joseph Chiarelli
VISION STATEMENTMercyhurst University seeks to be a leading higher educational institution that integrates excellence in the liberal arts, professional and career-path programs, and service to regional and world communities.
MISSION STATEMENTConsistent with its Catholic identity and Mercy heritage, Mercyhurst University educates women and men in a culture where faith and reason flourish together, where the beauty and power of the liberal arts combine with an appreciation for the dignity of work and a commitment to serving others. Confident in the strength of its student-faculty bonds, the University community is inspired by the image of students whose choices, in life and work, will enable them to realize the human and spiritual values embedded in everyday realities and to exercise leadership in service toward a just world.
CORE VALUES
We are. . .
Socially merciful. Mercy restores human dignity expands our social relations, and empowers us to reach out in compassion to others.
Globally responsible. Globalization challenges us to learn how to steward the resources of the Earth wisely and to act in solidarity with its diverse peoples.
Compassionately hospitable. Mercy hospitality begins with self acceptance, welcomes peoples of different faith, ethnic, and cultural traditions, and thus builds communities that transcend mere tolerance.
Intellectually creative. Generous, inquiring, and critical habits of mind, which support the aspirations for excellence manifested within the academic community encourage us in our lifelong search for what is true, good, and beautiful.
Reflectively aware. Our Christian environment encourages self reflection and contemplation of human behavior, promotes balance of mind, body and spirit; and ultimately offers the opportunity to develop a moral compass for a life of integrity.
Ambassadors of service.
