TOP Enders looking for rhythm

can tap into some new lessons in

Darwin.

West African drumming

teacher, Laura Mihalinec, moved

from Melbourne to Darwin last

year and decided to start classes

for anyone wanting to learn.

‘‘I noticed there wasn’t much

of a drumming community up

here. There was nothing

happening here – I wanted to

start something,’’ she said.

Ms Mihalinec learnt drumming

down south and fell in love with it.

‘‘I always loved the rhythm. I

was progressing well and in the

advanced class. When I moved

up to Darwin, I decided to teach

others,’’ she said.

Ms Mihalinec played piano

from age five and, at 16, she

started singing.

Before finding drumming, she

was also in a Latin band.

‘‘Music has always been in my

life,’’ Ms Mihalinec said.

Ms Mihalinec said African

drumming was becoming more

popular.

‘‘People seem to be really

enjoying it – it’s something to

share as a group,’’ Ms Mihalinec

said.

‘‘You can learn something new

and make new friends.

‘‘The community spirit that it

brings makes you feel good.

‘‘It lifts your mood, it’s self-

expression. Drumming is

something anyone can tap on.

It’s an approachable instrument.’’
